I used the traditional British pint glass.

Produced less than a quarter inch of head which dissipated quickly, to be expected for a porter. Nearly opaque dark brown to black.

I'm not that great at determining smell, but it had a very complex aroma of wood, malt, spice, and stone; along with chocolate and coffee of course. Not a single off-putting flavor.

The taste is as complex as the aroma. Tangy, mellow, slightly smoky but not obnoxious at all. Malty but not sweet, earthy, and smooth. Mouthfeel is not noticeable at the right temp except for slight carbonation and a bit sticky on the back of the tongue.

I wanted to try this for a while, and I was not disappointed. Great!

Poured from a 550 mL bottle in to a Duvel tulip.

A- Pours pretty darn black with some red around the edges. A nice big off-white head comes about two inches up on the pour.

S- Sweet caramel, chocolate, and some coffee. Just great.

T- Wonderfully roasty and malty. Just enough hops balances it perfectly. A subtle sweetness starts it off and the finish is anything but abrupt. Molasses, dark chocolate, and roasty malts. This is one solid representation of the style.

M- Medium feel, creamy, tingly. Nice.

O- I expected a good beer when I picked it up, and I may have gotten a great one. The price is right on this one at just over $3, and they're really easy to find. I think I'll be buying more soon.

Poured from a big 550ml bottle into a shaker pint glass.

Appearance - As close to black as beer gets. Tan, foamy head that never entirely goes away. Minimal lace.

Smell - Sweet. Roasted coffee beans. Carmel. Very nice.

Taste - Semi-sweet chocolate. Coffee. Carmel. Angostura bitters. Almost smooth/a bit tart. Big, complex, and delicious!

Mouth - Big. Alive. Slightly oily. The carbonation makes it presence known. Wow!

Overall - What a beer! There's a lot going on here. This is what all other Porters hope to taste like when they grow up.

16oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

(A)- Pours a nicely burnt sienna brown color. Produced a lovely cap of tan froth. Good retention too.

(S)- A nicely rich combo of mildly roasted bread and raisin. It actually reminds me of raisin bread toast (minus the butter).

(T)- Deeper elements of raisin, prune, and molasses present that what was in the smell. Finishes slightly dry and with some subtle toasted nuts.

(M)- A classic mouthfeel for a porter. A bit lighter in body than most of our american interpretations of this style, but it makes it smoother and easier on the palate.

(O)- Its really a classic. Porter lovers need to have this at least once.
