Enjoyed this 12oz can out of a craft beer glass.

A: Pours a red-copper hue with a huge, 4-finger, white head that slowly dissipates leaving a nice trail and ending in a sold lace.

S: Fruity sweet aroma.

T: Sweet tart fruity flavor with a wine-like quality. Finishes on the dry side of sweet.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Interesting fruity beer – worthy of a try.

12oz. into a Flying Dog Goblet

A: Probably one of the least appetizing colors that I have seen. It looks like muddy water that is a solid brown. I'd rather not liken it to #2 water, but it really is. Very cloudy/hazy. Crazy head upon initial pour that diminished to not even a layer of bubbles. Also, it has a decent amount of sediment at the bottom.

S: Sweet smelling like that of raisins and sour cherries. Also, a bit of grape juice or fruit cocktail as well, with a bit of yeastiness to it.

T: A bad mellow malt that seems like a lager. Tastes like "beer" and I mean that in a bad way as in the cheap stuff and the taste that people that don't like beer taste when they try one.

M: Quite carbonated and goes down like a slightly flat soda.

O: Couldn't finish it. There is nothing in here that I like. It is flat tasting (not as in carbonation) and dull. Beers that I don't like always remind me of why I didn't like beer before. It is that standard ubiquitous taste that I associated with any beer that I had tried (Rolling Rock, Yuengling and Leinenkugel, plus various ABI). It will become a part of my beer bread (along with Undercover and some Swamp Ape).

P: 12oz can into a perfect pint glass.

A: A murky amber that pours with a huge off white head that quickly fades into a light coating on top of the beer. Lacing is non-existent.

S: Sweet grassy malt with some tropical fruits, I'm not really getting much in the way of cherries. No hop aroma at all. The passion fruit really comes through as the beer warms.

T: Sweet up front, bitter in the finish. A strange alcohol like flavor that I can't place. Flavors seem "spikey," like they're all fighting to be in the forefront but none are winning. Tropical fruit in the finish that lingers on your tongue.

M: Highly carbonated with medium body. Probably a little too much carbonation for me. This is one of the least smooth beers I've ever had.

O: Not a great beer at all, probably not even a good one. It lacks direction and isn't all that pleasing to drink as it lacks smoothness. In the end, I find the flavors to all be a bit weird.

Pours out cloudy orange brown. The head is tan and lacks retention. No lacing at all. The smell is mostly of cherries. If you dig a little you might be able to get a little honey. Getting mostly tart cherries and somewhat of a medicinal taste in the background. Towards the finish the sweetness of the cherries comes a long with a bit of cooked sugar. The mouth feels seems watered down. The carbonation seems to be somewhere in the middle. Overall Im really not that impressed. I will not be purchasing this beer again. I didn't try the first beer in the series however I will be trying the 3rd. 3rd times a charm?

Poured gently from a can into a pint glass

Appearance: Cloudy amber color. Excessive carbonation. Three to four fingers of head forms, but quickly fades with no lacing.

Smell: Sweet malt, sour cherry, and some funk.

Taste: Tart up front. I get some sweet malt and tart cherries. The flavor profile seems disjointed and not well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Over-carbonated and very coarse.

Overall: I was disappointed by this beer. I have enjoyed a number of Jolly Pumpkin offerings and had high expectations for this. I would have liked the cherry flavor to come through more as well as a little more tartness. There is a noticeable difference between the Maui version and the Jolly Pumpkin version. I would recommend trying to Jolly pumpkin version instead. I would not buy the Maui version again, but I would have te Jolly Pumpkin version.

12 Ounce can poured into pint glass.

Appearance - A very nice rust color. Tons of carbonation and a ton of quickly fading almost white head. I had to stop pouring several times to let the head die down. Quite a bit of sediment formed in the bottom of the glass. No lacing. 3.5/5

Smell - It smells a lot more like a cider. Extremely fruity. I say apple. 3.5/5

Taste - It really isn't doing it for me. Very tart and super carbonated. It almost tastes like one of those fruity malt liquors. There isn't anything complex under the tartness. One dimensional. 2/5

Mouthfeel - The amount of carbonation in this beer ruins the mouthfeel for me. Too much fizz. 2.5/5

Overall - It looks very pretty, unless you are one of the people that hate sediment. Unfortunately, appearance and smell are not weighted as heavily (for me) as taste. The more it warms up, the worse it gets. I highly doubt I'm going to finish this. Luckily the can was only 99 cents. 2/5

This beer is offensively bad, drain pour. It tasted like trash and cigarette butts or perhaps like the dirt under the bleachers.

Beer served in a cervoise glass. Beer is amber, dark amber and clear without sediment, sediment makes it hazy, nice white head, medium and large bubbles, moderate carbonation, looks good.

Aroma is odd but not too off putting, mildly tannic, a little roast maybe.

I had the Jolly Pumpkin version of this beer and enjoyed it, This one I hated. It was thin and acrid, harsh and tasted like garbage. I gave it a fair chance but it failed on all front. AVOID AVOID AVOID. Never ever EVER make this beer again. I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit just thinking about it.

This beer poured out as a murky looking copper color, almost a light brown. The head was a cream color that had a moderate retention to it with a spotted lacing in the beginning. As time went by all that had faded. The smell of the beer is a little bit of a mix of things. No real dominant elements shine through, but there is a uniqueness to the beer on the nose to say the least. The taste of the beer gives off just enough of the Michigan cherries that was used and as for the Hawaiian fruit that was used I'd have to taste that on it's own to pick up where that comes in. The mouthfeel of the beer was decent, medium bodied with a good carbonation to it. Overall this beer wasn't too bad, not something I would need to buy cases of but it was fun to try.

Poured into a DFH etched snifter.

Deep mahogany with an off white head that builds up massively then quickly dissipates. Nose is sweet and fruity with notes of cherries, mild citrus, tropical scents (kind of mango-esque but lighter probably from the liliko'i), some brown sugar and some dark fruit. Smells like a sour, which has my hopes up because we don't get many sours here in Tucson. The taste is a slight letdown from the nose, but its not too far off. Light cherry flavors flow into a tart, tropical rush that overtakes the palate and fades into a grapefruity tart/sweet finish. It finishes pretty dry despite the final sweet flavors. Its not quite a sour but it has that nice tart taste I crave from them. I'll probably grab a couple sixers and keep them around for a few months to sate my cravings for sours.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a cloudy mahogany brown amber. Tall two finger off-white head that dissipated over a few minutes to a thin head with light patchy lacing. Unusual aroma of tropical and unidentified fruit and a bit of vegetable soup, tart sweetness. Flavor of tart fruit with passion fruit dominating, cherry, orange, turning a bit medicinal and astringent in the middle and finish. Finish is particularly tart and astringent. The fruit mixture was somewhat off-putting at first taste, but I have to admit that it grew on me as I drank this ale. Unfortunately, the finish was a bit unbalanced, but did have a grassy/hay quality that I also grew to appreciate in the end. Light to medium bodied. An interesting experiment that ended up just a bit to unbalanced. A bit more malt body could have improved the finish to allow appreciation of the interesting fruits. Truly glad I tried it because it is unique and interesting, but probably not a repeat.

im surprised people dont like this more. first of all i love the long distance collaboration with jolly pumpkin, great idea to brew with fruits from these two states. the beer pours from the can a murky brown/red color that doesnt let much light pass. there is an almost two inch head light brown in color that has decent retention. the smell is interesting, tart from the cherries, sweet from the passion fruits, and oddly complex from the malts. its not a sour, but has a nose that could be confused for one, as the yeast is also potent in the nose. the flavor is malty up front, more like a brown ale than a red i think, and it eases into a fruity finish, passion fruit acidity at first, cherry tartness last. its a long finish that blends the fruits nicely. the feel is just okay, its a little heavier in body than the flavor really demands, and it feels tiring in that sense. the carbonation is intense though, and that helps. overall i really enjoyed both the idea and the end result of this beer. could be improved by a lighter body, more filtration, and a little less sweet malt, but i thouht it was pretty good.

Big thanks goes out to micstache for this one as an extra in a recent trade! Served from can into a Mikkeller oversized wine glass. Poured a deep red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, wheat, grain, subtle fruit, and must. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, wheat, grain, cherry, and metallic. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty average brew. If I’m honest I’m not really sure what Maui or Jolly Pumpkin was going for on this one. There was a lot going on, but why was it all together in the first place is the question I ask you… The musty aroma and metallic flavor however were the killers of this one. While it was drinkable, it wasn’t the most enjoyable brew out there, but I’m glad I got the chance to try it at least.

Cloudy mahogany appearance. Thin off white foam with very fine bubbles of carbonation. Lots of yeast in the bottom of this can. This smells very unique, almost nothing like a beer. Tropical fruits, cherries, and vinous notes greet the nose with subtle hints of booze. Could be wine, a mixed drink, or cough syrup, not sure but it's got me interested at least.

A hoppy fruitiness up front is welcome, but the tangy fruit seems medicinal and gets a bit astringent toward the back. There are some herbal hop notes and subtle passion fruit in the finish I guess, but none of it really excites.

Overall a very unique beer that doesn't rate so well. Might be worth a try but don't expect great things. If the tropical fruit flavors were more prevalent I think this would be nice. Keep trying Maui.

Served from can into Russian River Goblet

A - Hazy light brown with some chunky white yeast settling to the bottom.

S - Nothing great here. Tart and rotten fruit, butter, creamed corn, almost diacetyl.

T - Slightly tart, some of the rotten fruit coming through. The flavor is just all over the place. I'm not sure why they wanted to release this but it just doesn't work.

M - Highly carbonated all the way through with a dry finish and a rotten fruit aftertaste.

O - Rotten fruit. That's all I'm really getting here not a great mix of flavors. Cherries and passion fruit may be a fun thing to try out for a home brew but, it just doesn't work out here. Wouldn't suggest getting it.

Pours a hazy reddish to orange-ish color with a tan head. In the aroma, dryer dark fruit with some bigger cherry notes. In the taste, a dry dark cherry, and a mellow malt. A small bite and a medium to bigger bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry cherry skin aftertaste. Nice, dry cherries. I bet it would be better if it was a wild yeast used.

Looks a deep orangish brown.

Smells like it has a hint of passionfruit.

The taste kills it for me. Its very disjointed, opening with a promising sip that flits between malt, very light hop, cherry and a hint of passionfruit. Three or four sips later, the tartness was wearing on my palate too heavy. The hops don't cut it out, the malts don't round it out, the passionfruit is too light to be noticeable. Ultimately, it wound up just becoming an acidic, tart-tasting mess in my mouth.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this, not even if you like fruity beers.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a pint tulip glass. This pours a hazy tea colored body with a large but short lived off white head which doesn't leave a lacing. The smells are sweet of ripe fruit, plenty of caramel. The feel is medium to light. The taste is okay, a little ripe fruit tartness, a wallop of brown sugar and caramel, nice dessert beer.

Can that I stole from Mike.

Mildly murky muddy brown, there's a dense, beige head that falls off to a ring rapidly. The nose is rather disappointing. Rather noticeably hoppy with Cascade hops, there's a nondescript fruitiness present. Crystal malt is present by the boatload. I can't say I get any passionfruit on the nose.

The palate opens rather terrible with a chalky bitterness, a tannic fruitiness and a tartness that's mellow. It then gets worse with an astringent crystal malt backbone that manages to be watery and still tannic and chalky. Mild dried sour cherry flavor is present. Medium-light in body and highly carbonated, this beer is quite terrible.

App- Ruddy looking brown,amber, red color with a nice 1-1/2 in tan head. Fast receding without lace or cling. A bit of a deep cordial look when its towards the bottom.

Smell- A weird nose on this one. Went for a deep cherry malty, lambic thing. Kinda works with the addition of the malts. Has a certain floral fullness to it.

Taste- Its okay. From reviews I read I fiqured as much about this. Still an amber ale with that full malt backbone without the bitter hops, but replaced by the semi-tart dry cherry flavors.

Mouth- A lighter body with a light medium carbonation. Weird cherry dry after taste. Couldve been more full.

Drink- Expected more, but got what this is. Just an Amber with some fruit. Hopefully can try the JP version.

I popped this can next to the JP version on 8.8.12.

A - Pours a dark cloudy orange-brown with floaters. A light tan fizzy head.

S - Subtle sourness. Sweet malt, slight fruit.

T - Dirt, earthy, very slight sweetness and tartness in the finish.

D - Mild carbonation with a medium body.

O - Not right here. Dirt, earth, not very pleasing.

12 oz can into a tulip glass.

Pours a ruddy amber brown, with 1 ½ fingers of foamy light mocha head. This retains with a thin fizziness that throws up some spotty lace that slowly creeps down the sides of the glass. After a while, this eventually goes pretty dead looking. The aroma smells of fruit (cherries are sticking out) and spices, which a touch of dark roast and sweetness in the nostrils. This isn’t very airy feeling at all, as the flavors overall just sit with some deadness in the nose.

The taste is mostly fruity tartness (that really gives this a certain amount of pithy bitterness) with a light backing of sugary sweetness. Spice and some light lingering roast round out the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a sharp and prickly feel to the carbonation that blows up in the mouth a bit. This softens up a bit along the back but this is overall pretty strongly carbonated.

This certainly wasn’t bad and I had no problem finishing the can but I was just looking for some more pizzazz from this. These flavors are just kind of there and never really do anything overly interesting. I guess you could call this a disappointment based on who was involved here. Cool looking can though!

A: Poured a deep brown with a lightly dirtied cap, some reddhish hued bubbles and light lacing

S: Tropical fruits and some blended red and dark cherry skins

T: Nice. A little cherry upfront with ome tropical fruits, perhaps a light citrus hop and a nice, clean and refreshing finish

M: Light-bodied, crisp, well carbonated. Fruitiness lingers on the palate as does a little booze and light hop bitterness

O: I find it amazing the styles of least interest are ranked lower. Just because you prefer IPAs does not mean a beer of this genre is below average. Its below average because you dont like them and your not basing upon quality rather upon taste and preference. Bias to other styles kills me.

Unmarked tulip glass

A: Pours out a cloudy orangish amber red color. Initially about a finger of off white head formed. Faded quickly. There are lots of tiny bubbles coming up the sides of the glass.

S: Smelled this as soon as I opened it. Up front I smell roasted notes. Maybe some coffee hints actually. Underneath I am pulling some of that cherry sweetness. Maybe the passion fruit as well.

T: Up front, you get some of the tartness from the cherries. In the middle, you get some more of the malt bill. More of the red ale is coming out. Toasted grains. Maybe a touch of roast coffee. On the close, it's fairly dry.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation faded after a while.

O: C+/B- I want to try the other JP version that is more sour.

Served from the can into a nonic pint glass

A- Poured a dark murky brown color with a rapidly dissipating soapy head that left no lace. Tons of streaming carbonation is visible even through all the murkiness

S- Bready, biscuity, caramel notes, and some underlying tropical fruit notes. Really interesting aroma

T- A pretty pronounced tartness up front that is fruity maybe like passion fruit, sweet caramel malts, lots of breadiness, and it tastes like there is lactose in this. Some interesting flavors but does not really blend for me. A lot more malt forward than expected.

M- Very smooth, soft mouthfeel, good prickly carbonation

O- Definitely a unique flavor profile and worth a try but it does not quite mesh for me. I don't really get any cherry taste at all. I got through about 8 oz. and that was enough for me.
