Poured from a 500 mL bottle into a teku glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep abyss brown/black and leaves a solid finger of tan head which lingers for a surprisingly long time until it falls flat, except for a thin, brown layer on the surface of the beer as well as lacing around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Bourbon, raisins, dark chocolate, light coffee. The bourbon really stands out in this one, in a good way - it screams to be tasted. Delicious aroma with all the staples of a barrel aged stout.

Taste: Bourbon is definitely front and center in this one, followed by chocolate, raisins and figs, coffee, and actually finishes rather subtly. For how pronounced the bourbon is, the ABV is amazingly well hidden and this beer is surprisingly smooth and delicious. Not overly sweet, but well balanced.

Mouth-feel: Surprisingly well-carbonated, medium bodied and creamy. Extremely smooth going down, along with a smooth finish.

Overall: This was a very interesting and impressive beer. The high level of carbonation really made it interesting - thinning out the body a bit and really smoothing it out. The flavors blend together nicely, revolving around the bourbon, to make this a really tasty stout.

Poured from 500 mL bottle

My kind of beer. It's an 8 ball in a glass. Complete darkness, no lighter shades of brown, simply a black hole. The head is brown, but only a finger thick, though it retains well and produces pretty good lace.

Just from the smell I know it's going to hurt. Bits of chocolate, and then bourbon dominates.

The taste doesn't follow the smell in that the bourbon is subtle. Roasted malt and chocolate fill the taste buds, with bourbon a minor player.

You can't get away from the strength of this beer, but it's relatively mild and fairly easy to drink. A bit of sweetness, some smoke, a tad of bitter and then some heat from the alcohol. All work well together.

I'm happy I got this beer. Despite the strength, I'm left wishing it was a 22-ounce bomber bottle. Easy to drink, good stuff, great beer.

A: pours a deep brown to black with a two finger tan head into my pint glass.
S: all kinds of bittersweet chocolate, vanilla and booze. Some roastiness and wood is there as well.
T: follows the nose impeccably. However, the dark chocolate and roasted malts are magnified. The booze really comes through at the back.
M: not as thick as I thought. Creamy but viscous. Excellent aftertaste.
O: this is one fantastic brew. Complex, smooth and so tasty. At 11%, you can taste the booze but its not overwhelming. Well worth the price.

Imperial Stout in a Bourbon Barrel. I think that most veteran beer geeks know where this goes. Let's get right to the flavor profiles! The whiskey notes are the first to notice, but during warming I get chocolate, coffee, and vanilla, and all this goes for the nose as well. Considering the entire profile of the beer, I would have to say that the balance is really well configured, in that no aspect was overwhelming. 22$ plus is hard to justify for a single bottle, but I'm glad I had! Cheers!

Nose: The aroma on this beer is heavenly. It's dominated by bourbon and oak, with an abundance of dark chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, and sweet caramel notes. There is also a hint of booze and some coffee. There is a lot going on, but the aromas blend together perfectly.

Taste: The taste lived up to the aroma (and the hype). It's complex, but balanced, and unimaginably delicious. Much like the smell, I got flavors of roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon and oak, vanilla, caramel, and even some dark fruits. Basically, it's everything that's wonderful about Old Rasputin, but greatly enhanced by the bourbon and oak. Unexpectedly, the booze was well hidden.

Mouthfeel: Medium, and not as thick as I had thought it would be. It left an amazing aftertaste and lingering warmth on the tongue.

Overall: It's one of the best beers I've ever had. Sure it's pricey as hell, but it's well worth it for a special occasion. I plan on putting my other bottle down to age for a while. I'm sure it will only get better.

Served from a corked and caged bottle into a Redhook Limited Release tulip.

Appearance- Pitch black with two finger mocha head that left pretty quickly. Fine lacing.

Smell- Caramel bourbon bomb. Some chocolate, heavy roasty malts, mild vanilla. Bourbon dominates the smell.

Taste- Wow. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon oak, mild chocolate. Smooth. Clean. Not too hot. Bitter finish. Pretty incredible.

Mouthfeel- Considerably lighter than I had guessed. Moderate carbonation. Smooth and mildly boozy. Wouldn't guess it's 12%.

Overall- Pretty fine stout. Heavy on bourbon, but not aggressive. Very well done.

Pours jet black with a mocha colored had this is extremely fluffy and is not dissipating with ease at all. I was expecting there to be little such a high alcohol content.

Smells super fruity, boozy and cocoa like. I pick up a tequila character with the fruit and bitter hop taking on a salty-like character. Really complex. I like it.

Right away I get a tequila taste, then to bitter cocoa and goes down with a light dark fruit presence from the barrel. Lots of hard liquor flavor. It seems like a rum with the body of a stout. Some warmth from the alcohol, but it is nicely hidden. As it warms I get a little more beer quality, but not enough.

I was expecting more cocoa/ sweetness and malt body. It feels a little thin in flavor with the liquor presence being a little heavy.

Scotch and Bourbon drinkers will love this. Overall, enoyable, but needs a little more depth to make it something really worth seeking out. Parabola takes this one down easily, unfortunately.

A: Black, hardly surprisingly. Two fingers of brown/tan head. Heavy lacing, very impressive.

S: Big, boozy, and bourbony.

T/M: Ever-so-slightly disappointing. The mouthfeel is thinnish and weak, not nearly as smooth as I remember the XIV. The flavors are light, but are chocolate, smooth molasses, and light bourbon.

O: I enjoyed it, but last year's was much better. This was a lackluster imitation, but maybe it's just not old enough?

Thanks to BigTuro for sharing this one during the Churchill's weekend festivities.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, bourbon, and wood. Taste is much the same with a chocolate chip cookie dough flavor and an alcohol kick on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is pretty hot at the moment and can use some time to mellow out.

500 ml corked and caged bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with almost an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. This is a very good smelling brew, it smells like bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, dark fruit, and bittersweet chocolate. It's a pretty good tasting brew too, it tastes like bourbon, vanilla, oak, roasted/charred malt, bittersweet chocolate, dark fruit, and a bit of anise and molasses. There's a good mix between the sweet and bitter roasty flavors. The mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and has moderate carbonation. Like the other versions I've seen in the past, this was $19.99 a bottle. But I like this beer a lot, so I keep buying the new version each year when I can find it.

A - Poured jet black, thick as oil with a finger of light brown head that quickly receded to a cap of foam. Very active carbonation.

S - Bourbon up front with oaky notes, dark malts, sweet cocoa, heavy vanilla, coffee and alcohol. All of the aromas of a standard RIS blown up and wrapped in bourbon. Smells amazing.

T - Sweet chocolate and whisky up front, mild vanilla, extreme roasted notes. Alcohol is prominent as a flavor but wrapped in smokey wood and bourbon. Extreme stout flavor profile with plenty of barrel qualities.

M - Thick, but not necessarily creamy. Has quite a bit of carbonation underneath it.

O - Extremely satisfying beer. Unfortunately priced, but undeniably a delicious and filling barrel aged version of an already standout stout

A - This is a beautiful looking beer just like the classy bottle it comes in. Almost jet black with a finger of mocha head that dissipates quickly into lacing.

S - Bourbon dominates this one with hints of vanilla and chocolate. Very nice.

T - Sweet with lots of vanilla and bourbon. Hints of chocolate and dark malt. The nearly 12% ABV is covered up extremely well. This drinks a little too easily.

M - Smooth and medium bodied. Goes down incredibly easily for it's high ABV.

This is in the highest tier of beers I've had. Old Rasputin is good enough, but this takes it too the next level. Hope to find some more of this.

500 ml bottle, corked and caged, 11.9% abv. Very deep brown color, nearly black. Great looking tan, airy head. Very nice head retention, along with some good spots of lace.

Roasted malt, along with some coffee first up. Great rounded bourbon notes, along with vanilla, oak and caramel. Maybe a little dark fruit, and a hint of alcohol. Very impressive nose.

Heavy with coffee and roasty flavors up front. Oak tannins come through next, drying things up a bit. Some bourbon and caramel notes. A bit of dark fruit. Sharp notes of dark chocolate near the end. Bitterness and tannins linger long in the finish.

Full body, with lighter carbonation. Some warming alcohol, but nothing overwhelming. Very nice balance with the barrel aging here. Pretty good.

A solid version of Old Raspy.

Pours black with great head and lacing, a bit of a waterfall effect with the tan head.

Aroma pops from the bottle with booze and bourbon. Vanilla, sweet, some cocoa. Sniffing the glass reveals a toned down bourbon and booze. More leather and vanilla. Flashes of roasted malt and coffee.

Flavor is more stout and less BA. The vanilla and booze are not dominant, and I like that. For 11.90% this has some booze, but it's really quite drinkable. Leather, black plum, earth tones, red wine tannin all come through in the flavor. I pour this at cellar temperature so not much changed.

While my ratings may seem low, it's not b/c the beer lacks anything, except maybe some body. The flavors are nice, the feel is comfortable and the booze is hidden for the most part.

A darn fine beer. Glad I have another

A: Barely jet black with a thin head that dissipated quickly

S: Pretty good on the smell. Dark Chocolate, Cocoa, caramel with some bourbon barrel notes.

T: Here is where it falls flat. Bourbon barrel dominates the flavor. I soaked American oak in bourbon, the remaining over-oaked whiskey reminds me a lot of this beer. The barrel flavor intensifies as it warms.

M: Thin body, dry finish. Doesnt hold up the spirit flavors well.

O: I would like to taste this beer after the barrel flavors start to mellow out. I would buy this beer again just to cellar it for a year or two. For a BBARIS, this is kind of a let down.

As someone who knows and loves bourbon barrel aged imperial stouts, I'm surprised I was overall disappointed in this beer.

The mouthfeel was thinner than I would have expected and the bourbon flavor was very light compared to KBS, Bourbon County, Porcine Unidragon, Black Ops, etc. The maltiness also didn't seem as present as its peers. It did seem rather hot in a general sense, not necessarily bourbon heat.

Not a bad beer, but not worth the price. I would rather pay less to get a better beer of this type.

A First off this one was incredibly carbonated as the cork ended up shooting out and hitting the ceiling when I opened it. Very dark brown body with a incredibly foamy mocha head. Definetly looks the part.

S Dominated by bourbon and booze. There are hints of chocolate and vanilla in there though.

T Some nice roasty notes, with chocolate and a bit of vanilla. However the alcohol dominates everything.

M smooth body with a very noticable burn.

Overall I thought that this was far too hot for its own good. However it should hold up well in the cellar so if you are willing to be patient and give it some time in addition to spending the money it might be worth it in the end.

The last five years have shows a lot of development for bourbon barrel-aged beers. No brewery has gained better command of their use than North Coast. Their Old Rasputin Ale continually demonstrates why the beer marries up so great with the barrels.

Like the original Old Rasputin, the beer pours with an inky-black appearance but with more embedded carbonation that makes the beer seem like it's crawling into the snifter Its creamy viscosity seems of motor oil just before the beer releases a lumbering head of creamy froth. Stubborn in its retention, the beer favors brandy-like lacing over sticky lace for an appearance that's much more of sipping ale than sessionable quaffing.

Strong succulent aromas of cocoa-rich chocolates and espresso-roast coffee commands the taste while deep toffee and fruitcake offer subsidiary aromas for added complexity. Still, the attributes of vanilla, cherry-like alcohols, oak, and unmistakable bourbon guide the nose all over the rim of the glass.

And all that richness and sultry sweetness is delivered to taste as the heavy bourbon caramel and vanilla goodness entertwines with strong espresso, bittesweet chocolate and even fudge-like seduction. Those fruit-forward alcohols of cherry, grape, and wood hedge on sherry-like vinous taste and weave in a plumby, fig-like taste that keeps the beer complex at all stages of its taste. The beer's strength in taste, savory sweetness, and robust roast character far exceeds what's expected for any style of stout.

The beer matches its rich taste with viscous body. Its overstated full viscous palate sensations offer us a creamy weight that's only thinned by the enormity of alcohol and bourbon booziness. As the beer garners warmth going into finish, it remains velvety and silky smooth with only a hint of dryness as the beer finishes. It easily supplants brandy and cognac as an after dinner delight.

As the beer reaches its apex, its apparent that the beer exceeds what's expected of stout, even barrel aged varieties. It's an exquisite stout that surpasses all expectations in flavor, texture, and aroma. Trying to define these intangibles further will only do the beer a massive injustice.

I would like to start by saying that I am chillin in my room drinkin this crazy awesome beer...and my roommate is downstairs doin P90-X. He has no idea what he's missing lol. So this $22 bottle pours up black opaque. Decent lacing of a chocolate milk colored head. Aroma is dark roasty malts, dark chocolate and a hint of milk chocolate, subtle dark molasses, vanilla bean, bourbon barrel oak is pretty dominant, caramel. Tastes is the same as the nose but with a spicy kick to it. Full bodied. Medium to heavy carbo. Me and Old Rasputin go way back. But his return this time around is awesome! This brew is pulchritudinous which is a synonym for beautiful bodied.

Live review. Poured from the corked and caged 500 ML bottle that I was surprised and delighted to find, for $19.99, at Giant Eagle in Painesville, Ohio. As I stood in the aisle not believing my good fortune I thought, "now this is why I always check the beer aisle!" Anyway, poured into a clean, clear glass.

A Almost completely black body. In front of direct light there are edges of a deep, dark mahogany. The head is a medium to dark brown, 3 inches in height after moderate pour and it sticks around for a full 2 or 3 minutes. As it receded it left a curtain like lacing on the inside of the glass. Very cool look. I did not expect much less. 4.5

S Wonderful Bourbon notes rise up in the front but there is a distant background of dark roast malt. Goodness in a glass. Makes it difficult to record these thoughts without taking a sip. 4.75

T Wow...great tasting beer first off. Secondly, I am struck by just how "bourbonesque" this beer is. I have had something like 10 or 12 bourbon barrel aged stouts and this might be the most bourbon influenced. The bourbon is up front and rather dominates the taste. I don't get nearly as much deep, dark roast malt that I got in straight up Old Rasputin. That is a slight disappointment since Old Raspy is one of my favorite Stouts. I guess that it is my opinion that the best BA Stouts retain much of the dark roast malt goodness but feature the Barrel Aged character as an accompaniment. By contrast, this BA Stout has the bourbon front and center. All of that being said, I have become an "easy mark" for Bourbon Barrel aged beers and so I find it hard to rate them at all badly. With all that in mind I render my rating on the taste of....4.0

M Feel is something of a disspointment. Again, my opinion formed after 10-12 Bourbon BA Stouts is that the best ones have a great silky smoothness. This one, by contrast is a bit thin. Upon the pour, the head suggested that it might have all of the silkiness that I could desire but the actual feel was more thin than that. 3.0

D/O Drinkability is fair. Despite its elevated ABV (nearly at the limit for Ohio BTW) it is entirely drinkable but its price limits me to only one bottle for an evening. Overall this is a great beer. I feel lucky to have been able to try it. Thanks to Giant Eagle for getting it in stock! 4.25

Fresh 500ml bottle in a snifter

A black stout color with a medium quick dissipating head. Great lacing. Pretty beer.

T wow! A surprising light beginning with cocoa, nice coffee, the middle has a light vanilla, charred bourbon barrel and oak, the end is the best part, bigger bourbon barrel flavors, dark and bitter chocolate flavors. The aftertaste is a long lasting bourbon. A fantastic and wonderfully balanced beer. Delicious.

M smooth, soft, no bite, no heat. Great beer.

O wow. This beer is wonderful. One of the best bb stouts I've had. Balanced, soft, smooth, not overly sweet, no heat what so ever, just absolutely fantastic. I love it and highly recommend trying it.

Very fresh bottle, just released.

A: Dark brown pour. Enormous and ridiculously fluffy medium brown head. Head fades away very slowly. Moderate splashes of light fluffy lacing. Great head retention.

S: Ahhh. Some big, bold and sharp bourbon notes. Primarily caramel and brown sugar. Mild smooth chocolate underneath. Coconut and vanilla from the barrels.

T: Strong bourbon up front but not overpowering like the aroma. Again, mostly caramel and brown sugar here. Nice roasted malt, smooth and sweet chocolate and vanilla. Some char, primarily into the finish. Coconut in the finish and aftertaste with some oakiness. Aftertaste is almost pure bourbon due to the booziness.

M: Heavy but cut decently by the bourbon. Smooth with a drying boozy aftertaste.

O: Very tasty bourbon-barreled RIS. This one is obviously quite fresh and hot but that doesn't mean it's bad. Kinda reminds me of a less harsh fresh BCBS in fact. This one has a surprising amount of coconut from the barrels, and quite a bourbon-heavy finish (roasted malt didn't stand a chance here). Tasty and enjoyable.

Black body with a 1/2" if cinnamon colored head.

The bourbon presence in the nose was really heavy. Oak, vanilla, tobacco. There's a good deal of chocolate and roast.

Good bourbon flavors, too. Vanilla, toasted marshmallow, oak, dark chocolate, and dark berries.

Mouthfeel is a little too thin to support the booze. If only it could be a little more viscous and smooth I think it would have gone a long way.

Overall, a very good beer. I really enjoy the NC anniversary beers but I wish they'd come down in price. There are better barrel aged beers out there for much less.

Bottle to snifter.

A - Black with one finger of thick cocoa brown head. Good lacing.

S - Big barrel notes up front - bourbon, vanilla and oak. Chocolate fudge, roast and brown sugar aromas in the background.

T - The base beer comes through a lot more than the nose indicated. A big roast profile up front along with a big bitterness. Some oak, bourbon and a hint of vanilla mid-palate. The finish adds cocoa, molasses and a warming alcohol presence. A slight astringency is present in the finish as well.

M - Medium body. Not as thick as I expected. Light carbonation.
