After the Albion, this was the second best bar that we checked out in our few days in Chester. First, the place isn’t hard to find, if you know where to look. At Northgate at the roman walls, walk down the stairway off the bridge. Walk west along the canal on the north side, and you basically walk into the place. You’ll have to follow those directions, since the street isn’t on any maps and none of our concierge folks knew exactly how to get there (they didn’t live in Chester…)

Sits on the canal, with nice outside seating that would be perfect with spring or summer weather. It was cold, just getting over winter, when we visited in early March, so we ate and drank inside. There is a main bar as you walk in with various taps and engines. A small group of tables, with most in this area are near the nice, large windows overlooking the canal. To the left are two more dining/sitting areas. On the second floor are groups of tables used mainly for eating. The walls here are covered with paintings by local artists. On the first floor is a music area that is decidedly smokier and darker. We went upstairs to eat and drink. Bands and/or salsa dancing every night. Appeared to have a good crowd no matter what day it was. I’d recommend getting there early, or making reservations. Food was a slight notch above pub grub. We had appetizers, salads, and sandwiches.

They had multiple cask ales, including Landlord and Weetwood. They were delicious, with everything being served appropriately. A few other fine beers were on tap, including Erdinger and Starapromen. The Erdinger was fresh and served properly. The waitress was friendly and fast, though it was obvious that they were a little short-handed. The bartenders were very into the brews and had varied and strong opinions about the offerings. Recommended while in Chester, just remember to call ahead for seating and/or whether or not there is a cover charge.
