First had: on nitro at their brewpub
Labeled as a "farmhouse coffee stout."
For a nitro beer, this didn't have that classic creamy/cascading look to it. Dark brown-black pour with a small wispy white head; minimal retention and lacing. Roasty aroma, dark malts and coffee beans. More of the same in the taste, roasty dark malts, smooth coffee, with the whole thing lightened by the saison yeast, imparting light herbal and earthy qualities. A mild tea-like astringency in there as well. About medium in body, a bit thin for a stout, and especially for a beer supposedly on nitro. Not bad, but nothing really memorable.

A nitro offering at the source. The brew appears dark brown with clarity noted around the edges. A rich creamy film of off-white rests atop with retaining power only ever seen via a nitro delivery. The cap lasts down the the last sip.
The atoma is straight fresh roasty citrus-like coffee beans. There is a solid roasted element to the nose but it seemingly comes feom nothing but the espresso/coffee inclusion. While I found the nose to be really enjoyable I almost have to fault this for smelling too much like coffee and nothing else.
The flavor is all coffee initially with roast and espresso-like freshness. While the coffee inclusion is bold, it doesnt totally dominate the profile. Also present are some flavors of wheat and a hint off lemon tartness typical of some saison yeast strains. Minor alcohol tinges emerge with some warmth as the experience continues along with some accenting fruity aspects.
This is a medium to full bodied brew that has a very smooth and creamy feel that is enjoyable. My only gripe is that the coffee dominated the nose leaving no room to smell anything else. Also, while the flavor isnt dominated by the coffee, it clashes a bit with the base brew. I think this dark saison could have worked better possibly without the coffee.

Poured in 10-oz. spherical glass from nitro tap at the Bullfrog.
A: nitrobubbles; solid black (duh) with a great looking foamy head; super lacing (of course)
S: light coffee smell; less aromatic than I expected
T: very sweet; the nitro adds an extra dose of sweetness; the Belgian candy sugar is very strong; roasted malt, coffee dominates; simple, straightforward as stouts go, with a low hop profile; I recommend this be had only as a dessert beer.
