Review from notes. Had a Pittsburgh tasting a while ago.
Growler poured into a Stone taster.
A - Pours a dark orange, with fringes of ruby in some spots with select lighting. It's moderately clear, and slowly builds a 1.5-fingered head with good retention. The lacing is sparse and scattered, however.
T - Obviously with a name like Rye Not, you'd expect some bold rye notes, and Bullfrog doesn't fail to deliver in that regard. It's quite spicy and it almost seems like it has some caraway in it. Contrasting this strong rye spice are juicy, citrus hops that dominate the end of the aroma.
S - There is a very complex taste right out of the gate. Here, the rye doesn't overpower and is content to mingle with the other elements. Some grape notes enter the mix here as well. As in the nose, there are still a lot of hops, mostly in the form of pineapple and grapefruit.
M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with good carbonation. The rye spice and hop bitterness mingle at the end to give the palate a tasty rememberance.
D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. The flavors in 'Rye Not' are bold and fresh, which makes me want to keep drining. They are strong, however, so after a glass I could definitely feel myself slowing down to allow my palate to recover.

On tap at Bullfrog on 8/7/11.
A - Hazy copper-colored liquid with a finger's worth of frothy beige foam that yielded plenty of stringy and patchy lacing around the glass.
S - Rye character is the dominant force here, imparting a spicy, bready quality. The dry-hopped presence is also quick to suggest leafy, tea-like notes as well as some darker earthy attributes and pine. A hint of caramel malt adds a touch of sweetness to the nose.
T - Dry, spicy and hoppy, Rye Not? is laden with earthy and bready tones and some sharp grassy bitterness, the latter of which appears midway and lasts through the backend, giving the finish a moderately spicy hop bite. There is a hint of butter in the mix, although it doesn't really detract from the flavor much. A small dose of caramel and bready malt softens the bitterness a bit, offering balance to the finish.
M - Medium bodied with a light syrupy texture and mild carbonation, resulting in minimal bristle on the tongue. Finishes fairly dry with moderate lingering hop bitterness on the palate.
D - Tasty rye beer with a healthy dose of spicy, earthy hops and that dry-hopped grittiness. Good stuff overall.

A pint at the brewpub. Dry-hopped.
A: A dark rye beer, deep with dirty brown amber colors. A thick white head blankets the beer, a contract of colors.
S: A strong nose. The dry hopping adds a rich citrusy dimension that goes well with the inherent spiciness of the rye. Dark anise-like carraway is indicative of the rye.
T: Again, very hoppy. The fresh addition of hops a good idea. Those citrus flavors are bitter but not any stronger than a good IPA. As the initial wave of hops pass, the rye and caramel become more apparent. The former is spicy and dark; the latter sweeter. After the first wave, the hops don't get in the way much more, allowing the rye to strut around.
M: The transition from hops to rye is nice, a citrusy bitterness quickly replaced by dark spices and bread. Lots of hops and rye is always a good formula in my book.
