Review from notes taken awhile back. Draft offering at the pub served in a pint. The brew appears an reddish amber color with an off-white cap that holds decent leaving patchy lace.

The smell includes notes of caramel and toffee-like sweetness. There is also a fruity aspect almost like currant with a soft almost vanilla oak note.

The flavor is sweet and bready with fruit like the aroma suggested - currant/raisin and a little green and yeasty. A soft amount of oak tannins in hinted in the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. An interesting brew that I could take or leave.

Served on tap in a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer pours a hazy brownish mahogany color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of sweet smells of caramel and toffee and well as some lighter dark fruit aromas of a raisin and plum nature. Along with these smells are some lighter woody and oaky smells as well as a decent showing of a boozy rum like aroma.

Taste – The taste begins as the nose would let on with lots of caramel and toffee and a good showing of a more bready and doughy like flavor. As the taste advances the sweet persists being joined by the very fruit flavors that were in the nose. Along with the fruit some boozy and woody flavors come to the tongue along with a bit of an herbal and grassy flavor. In the end with the sweet remaining quite potent and the boozy raising to a good level, one is left with a rather sugary sweet and warming flavor to be left on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the sweet, fruity, and boozy flavors of the brew the thick feel and low carbonation are fantastic for the style and makes for a nice slow sipper, just as an old ale should be.

Overall – A rather sweet and slightly boozy old ale that while gives a warming feel, does not make for a hard drinker. A rather nice one to try if you get a chance.
