Part of a sampler at the brewery - pours a darkish-red color, has the same smoky malt taste present in their stout and brown, which I found unique and odd for a red, but it worked well. The malt certainly overwhelmed the hops (at least in this batch) because Riley's red should have a fairly strong hops taste according to the menu.

Growler from Little Apple pouyred a clear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of butterscotch, carmel, light earhiness and light fruittiness. Mouthfeel was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel, butterscotch and light fruittiness with a crisp lingering carmel finish.

Pours a clear, red color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of citrus hops, slight floral hops, and sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Amber / Red Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight citrus hops, slight sweet malt, hint of alcohol, hint of caramel malt, and hint of floral hops. Overall, lacking in appearance and aroma, but good feel and good blend for a fairly complex body.

A good example of a Red Ale, but I will say that this is not my favorite style so my review won't be very favorable.

Dark red/amber clear brew with slight head. Very little aroma. Nice smooth mouthfeel.

Flavor is way too sweet for my taste but seems consistent with other Red ales I've had. A step up though from many I've had of this style.

Would make a great session beer if you like your beers on the sweet side.

A - Poured out an amber color with a good carbonated appearance. It had a foamy, bubbly, one-finger head that left some lace.

S - It smelled of roasted malt and some floral notes.

T - It tasted bittersweet and malty. It was lightly hopped and had an earthy taste, too.

M - It was crisp and smooth. A light to medium-bodied beer.

D - This is a very good beer. I lived in Manhattan for 4 years but never had this one. I should have because it is a good amber.

This one poured more copper than red, with a very scant head that disappeared quickly. The aroma was absent. I literally could not smell anything in the glass.

The flavor, unfortunately, is only slightly more present than the aroma. There is a little bit of base grain malt flavors, and no hops that I can detect at all. The only clue hops are in here at all is the fact the beer is not cloying. It's inoffensive, flavorless, but it's really just not very good.


It's easy to drink, but then, with no flavor, why would it not be? I really wanted to like this, but I just can't recommend it to anyone. Easily my least favorite of the beers I tried in my trip here.

Dark red in color and very clear from the fining agents. The head is thin and coats the rim of the glass. Dark caramel malt along with a hint of toasty Munich malt comprise the malt aroma. The mild citrusy Cascade hop nose is quite inviting and not overbearing. A bit overcarbonated and almost soda like in mouthfeel-- the CO2 level does vary from batch to batch, however. The brew is clean, crisp and exhibits an excellent balance of light malt sweetness and hop bitterness. There's nothing superlative in flavor, but the balance, simple, lightly citric hop flavors and clean and dry finish make this a quaffable red. It's a good session brew.
