My wife and I dropped in for a late lunch and we were two of about 8 patrons in the entire place. Took advantage of the nice Texas fall weather and sat on the small but nice porch. Place is very open and has a bice vibe to it, though it was a bit off given how empty it was. I certainly wont hold that against them at 2:00 on Thursday.
Service was prompt and friendly and the waiter was even able to give me a couple of descriptions for the rotating taps they have beyond the standard "it's kind of a dark beer" that you get at so many place. The tap selection was nice but a touch lacking in locals especially given what Austin beery places are usually like. A couple of Live Oak, one 512, two St Arnold and a Real Ale was it for regional stuff. A nice mix of main stream US craft taps such as Lagunitas and Harpoon. A good selection for any beer geek, but nothing to go crazy over.
Menu was full of what I would call upper tier bar & grill food. Nice mix of sandwiches and salads along with some tasty looking appetizers. I had the Cuban and my wife had the Green Chile chicken Sandwich. We were both pleased with what we ordered.
Zax is certainly a place worth going if you are in the area. Dont expect to be blown over by the beer selection but you should be able to find something that strikes your fancy.

Had lunch here today, 30 May 2010.
First time visit. About 15 taps and as many bottle selections. Only one 512 tap (Pecan Porter) and two from Live Oak (IPA and Pils), was a little disappointed with the lack of locals available. Food was good. Appetizers were mussels and crabcakes, good considering the distance from the ocean. Had the Cuban sandwich, tasty. Highlight was the dessert, Kasteel Rouge with a cajeta and bittersweet chocolate cheesecake.
Had a bottle of Belgian Red we wanted to open but they don't allow that because of code or licensing... Prices just a little on the pricey side IMO but probably reasonable for Austin.

Stopped by Zax for the first time while down by Auditorium Shores the other weekend. The place was pretty quiet at around 5:00 PM, and my wife and I sat at the bar for a quick pint. Around 20 taps are available with a good selection of locals from (512), Live Oak, Independence, and Real Ale (including Sisyphus). A few standard imports and some domestic crafts like Laguintas IPA, which I chose, round out the tap list. Prices seemed pretty reasonable-- around $4.00-$4.50 for the Lagunitas IPA
The interior has a bright, airy feel and is filled with a number of tables and booths, and a few tables line one side of the exterior. As I said, things weren't too busy at this time, so it was nice and quiet inside. Bartenders were attentive and helpful, but we didn't stick around long enough to try any food service.
I had a good experience at Zax, and I'd come back for the atmosphere and to try a meal if I was nearby. Not the deepest tap list you'll find, but signs advertised a keep-your-glass pint night on Wednesdays that I'd definitely come back for if I lived closer to downtown.

Two words, pint night. They have a special beer on tap that comes in its own pint glass which you can keep. Last night they had Real Ale Lost Gold IPA Cask, which was wonderful. Their beer selection has nice seasonal taps that change about every month.
The food is good, I've never had a bad meal there. But your best bet would be to stick with their amazing pizza or burgers, since their main entrees are a bit on the pricey side.
Service has been very good over 90% of the time I've been there, and the waitstaff have some good knowledge of the beers that are available.

Here I am looking at my beerfly reviews and I realize I haven't reviewed Zax.
I go to this bar probably once a month or so. The highlight for me is they have pint night on Wednesdays and that usually is a cask.
They have had some epic casks here some even that the major Austin beer hangouts don't get. Real Ale and St Arnold casks spring to mind.
Parking is not all that great. I usually park in a unclaimed parking lot and worry that my car doesn't get towed. It's an easy walk from downtown, though.
When I have been here , usually during happy hour on Pint night, and it is pretty crowded. The service has suffered due to the crowds. I have had the range from pretty good service to really bad service where the waitress forgot to put in my food order.
The food is ok, not exceptional. Pretty decent selection of food. A little pricey.

Every time I go to this place I walk out asking myself why don't I vist this place more often. The service from the time you walk in the door is A+ and the atmosphere is casual but somewhat elegant. The happy hour here is great, try a pizza! I visted again last weekend and had the scallops which were wonderful along with a Saint Arnold's Devine Reserve 7 which was a GREAT surprise! The draft selection was better than usual but I could not believe they had DR7 which took all of my attn.
Highly recomended for HH and on Wed. There is some seating outside for the nice Texas winter.
