Located in a mid-sized grocery store. Nicely arranged beer and liquor section in the corner. By Louisiana standards this was an outstanding selection. Even better was the service. The staff (manager?) was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and even added me to a new beer delivery email list.

I usually go here for beer only when I am in Baton Rouge for work.
While they might not have the biggest selection of beers, the quality is really good. I've found Fantome' Saisons to Tilquin Gueuze to Drie Fonteinen. A good amount of local stuff and usually not just the main staples. I stopped by today and was able to pick up Terrapin Moo Hoochiato (the French Toast WnB was gone in 15 minutes and I was too late). Great choices from Evil Twin, Mikkeller, Clown Shoes, Founders, and Terrapin.
The service, although I usually go in and out, is helpful the times I've inquired about beers coming in. All in all, this is one of the better, if not best, craft beer places in BR.

It's a locally owned grocer that has the best liquor selection in Baton Rouge. And if I'm wrong, please enlighten me. I have never accessed the aisles for groceries, so I cannot comment on variety/selection/pricing of goods. However, the staff is always pleasant and the liquor selection is well organized. Prices vary, depending on type of alcohol, obviously.
However, like previously stated, you will be hard pressed to find a better selection of wine, beer, liquor, spirits, mixers, etc. anywhere else in the Baton Rouge area.

If you're looking for the widest beer selection in Baton Rouge, Calandro's offers a good selection of American craft as well as plenty of Belgian, German, English, and other imports. They offer plenty of 12 and 11.2 ounce single bottles for sale as well as plenty of bombers. If it's not at Calandro's, you could probably find it at Matherne's on Highland and take care of most of your beer shopping in Baton Rouge. This place also gets plenty of special releases.

The staff on that end of the store are willing to answer questions here. They do try the beer and will give you their opinions on it. In addition, if they do know when they will be getting special selections, they do tell you. This place is a bit more expensive than some other stops in Baton Rouge, but it's one of the best places to stop for beer in the city.

I stopped at several beer stores while in BR and this one was the best I found. Big selection, most available as singles. Lots of Belgians, Euros, German, etc. Mikkeller, Jolly Pumpkin, Fort Collins, Boulder, Bear Republic,Stone, etc as well as a plethera of locals, I recommend NOLA, quite good IMHO. They also had one of my favorite session beers, Full sail Amber. As service goes there was a guy in the area and we talked but his knowledge was limited. I actually recommended a few beers to him based on what he said he liked.

I always drop by Callandro's when I'm in town to get my MINI Cooper serviced. The store has great food, especially the sandwiches at the deli. For $7.99, you can get a huge po-boy, dressed for take-out.
The beer section is on the left side of the store. There's a small refrigerated section, but most are warm. Lot of Belgians and U.S. craft beers. Bring a six-pack container (or three) with you so you can fill with singles. They do have small boxes for take out.
Prices are reasonable. Beers come in 12 oz and bomber sizes. All the Louisiana crafts like Abita, Bayou Teche and Heinerbrau.
Callandro's is clean, very serviceable; clerks are helpful. The beer manager works with 12 distributors and can probably get hard-to-find stuff if you request it.
Easy in, easy out. Simply a great grocery, beer and wine store.

Aside from being a little cramped when there's a good handful of beer geeks shopping with you, the atmosphere and set up is nice. The staff is very friendly. I rarely need help, so I can't comment on knowledge, but I'd assume it's adequate. In Baton Rouge, Calandro's has the best selection. I rarely go anywhere else when in town. They also have a tendency to get things a tad before we get them here, so I'd cool to be in town and happen upon something new. Price though can be a bit pricey. For example, Mikkeller Texas Ranger was $15 a bottle there, but at my local Acquistapace, they were about $12.99. Some stuff is well priced and you can find some nice clearance stuff.

Bar none, Red Stick's best beer store.

Nice supermarket with a very nice beer selection. Not sure how it compares to other stores in Baton Rouge, but it has a lot of beer we don't get in Texas. The employee in the beer section was very knowledgeable and said he could order things that were not on the shelves. Some of the beer highlights were beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Amager and Nogne O. They also had a lot of beers from Shmaltz (both Coney Island and He'Brew) as well as a few surprises from breweries such as Fort Collins and Stevens Point (had no idea they were distributed this far southeast). The store also has a full selection of spirits - root beer schnapps anyone? - as well as a huge selection of Louisiana hot sauces. A store I will definitely visit again in the future.

In an unassuming local supermarket lies a treasure trove of beers. Belgians, european session beers, german lagers, and some interesting wheats. Worth the stop, even though the Andrea/Perkins intersection may be the worst, most horribly designed intersection in LA. They have several great stops in NOLA and lafayette, but Calandro's has some the others don't. In LA, you got to go to several places to get the feel of whats available.

I did not have to ask anyone for service, but there was someone in the area moving stuff around.

Went in here with my girlfriend to get some beer I couldn't get in vt. For being in the south this place has a good selection! I was able to find evertything from Anita including their seasonal and limited bombers, I got a fewwest coast beers I've never heard of as well as a new Zealand beer which I'm hoping is good. I also found a st. Bernardus gift pack with all four of their beers and a real nice chalice from them. Really nice place very clean an neat as well as a lot of high end food, best place I've seen in baton rouge.

As others have said, Calandro's has the second best selection in Baton Rouge. What makes the selection great is that it changes constantly. Each time I visit, I am surprised with new arrivals. The service is also great as the owners are friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to offer advice on selections. The quality is nice, but it's held back by distribution in Louisiana. The price vary from being slightly overpriced to getting the occasional steal. Especially lately, there has been some great deals.

Calandro's Supermarket is a grocery store with a good bakery located in store, and it also has a nice selection of beer and wine. This review covers the location on Seigen Ln and Perkins Rd, but there is also a smaller location on Government St that has a smaller selection of beer.

Calandro's has been one of our beer stops in Baton Rouge for several years now. There is a nice selection of beer along the far left wall near the front of the store, located right next to the wine section, and continuing into the refrigerated foods area with some refrigerated beer options. They carry domestic macro products, but the focus is on imports and domestic micros. You will find the local Abita beers available here including the 12 bottle Party Pack, and they usually have a good supply of the Abita seasonal offerings as well. You will also find a selection of Sierra Nevada, Samuel Adams, Anchor, Unibroue, and Rogue products, as well as Flying Dog, Red Hook, Full Sail, and more. There are English and Belgian offerings as well, and they will occasionally have limited release or annual release options as well.

We haven't had many problems with the quality of the beers that we have bought from Calandro's, and there have been many. Sometimes we may have gone out on a limb and purchased something that was a gamble to begin with, but we can't fault the store for our own bad judgment. The staff of the store is generally nice and will try to answer your questions if you have any, but you will get the feeling that wine is their area of expertise if you've built up a decent amount of personal knowledge about beer.

The two biggest issues with Calandro's are stock and price. Having shopped here over a long range of time, the stock has not always been well maintained and the options from certain brewers such as Anchor and Sierra Nevada that should probably be easy to find may not be stocked for months at a time. It is aggravating to go somewhere expecting to be able to buy a particular item and then finding that it's not even offered on the shelves anymore. The prices are rather high for many things across the board, and it has gone up a noticeable amount in the past three or four years. There are still some things at Calandro's that are priced lower than anywhere else in Baton Rouge, but there are also some things that are priced higher than anywhere else as well.

Definitely give Calandro's a visit if you're looking for good beer for home in BR, as it's still much cheaper over the long run than going out to a restaurant or a bar. You just may need to shop around a little if you're tight for cash.

Edit 2/2/09 (deleted original review as it has changed a bit in selection in the past couple of years)

Went back here this past weekend after not visiting here for a long while. They did a great job expanding their beer selection. They have a large line-up of single beers, most are bottles made to be singles, but they have also broken up some six packs to sell the singles...bigfoot and torpedo come to mind. of Lots of belgian beers, but also many beers from other countries, baird, nogne (that norway brewery), mikeller....i cannot remember off hand but i would say they offer around 200 different beers, maybe more...maybe less. Definitely worth checking out if in baton rouge.

This is actually a friend of mine's store. The service cannot be beat. Mr. Calandro does a great job of communicating his knowledge to people w/o sounding snobby. He is a great help in selecting beer/wine. I would like the selection to be greater, and it is about average, but the service more than makes up. They have a GREAT selection of wines (which is the real reason to go) but you should at least check it out if your tastes go that way. Don't expect to be blown away in the beer dept. but they do have great wines and service.

I randomly found Calandro's while driving around Baton Rouge with nothing to do. Since I'd never been inside before I decided to pop in; lo and behold I found a large beer selection in a corner of the store. From what I have seen this place has the second largest beer selection in town behind Marcello's. Plus they have some beers that I haven't ever seen in other sotres around town. Plus they seem to have frequent sales specials and a moderate selection of singles for their more expensive beers. Still, as in other craft beer places I have visited in Louisiana, the prices are a touch higher than in Texas. Anyhow, this is a good place to check out while in Baton Rouge, but I wouldn't put it in the elite of beer stores.
