Had this on 6/8/11, but just found my notes now; didn't want to try to guess and enter without them.

Amber with some head that dissipated quickly but left a sticky lacing on the glass. Smells of hops--no other notes. Tastes sharp and hoppy; not much depth. Too sharp. There is no body to the beer. It had a nice aftertaste, but a harsh finish. I wouldn't order this.

Served on tap at the Dockyard in Bermuda.

Pours dark copper, some foam, some stickiness. Toffee/caramel in the nose, but very light. Taste is a more bitter malty beer. Hop sticks throughout with a bitter aftertaste,

Carbonation way too light for an IPA. Need more bite.

The former North Rock Brewing Company is now Dockyard Brewing Company, and is located at The Frog and Onion Pub. This beer was originally described as a strong dark ale, but the menu at the pub states it is an IPA.
In an imperial pint glass the beer is a dark amber color with a moderately sized white head that left a bit of lace.
It had a floral aroma, and a bit of sweet malt.
Very pine taste, lingering. Bready.
A pretty nice, average IPA.
Easily drinkable especially on a warm summer day after shopping forever.

Appearance: clear, reddish brown, 1/2 inch head, medium carbonation

Smell: small hops, malt, and sugar

Taste: a malty start, some nut, with a hoppy earthy finish

Mouthfeel: smooth, light bodied, sweet start with a slightly bitter finish. Next to no carbonation can be felt.

Drinkability: I could session this. This is the best of North Rock's beers. It does have some bitter taste, but it is not overpowering. It is a bit light, like all of North Rock's beers.

23oz at the Frog & Onion, April 13, 2009:

A: The beer appeared a clear amber color with a thin white, light head that was pretty well retained. The beer had some carbonation rising to the top of the glass.

S: The beer gave off a light aroma of mainly hops and not much else, but again, this was very light. Also a hint of pine.

T: The flavor was light, a little bitter and a light malt/bready flavor to it. I believe the menu stated that it was an IPA, but I would agree that it is more of an English Pale Ale.

M/D: The body of the beer was light, with a light bitter aftertaste and decent carbonation. The beer was enjoyable, but not really memorable. Easy to drink, but again as with the other beer that I tried, it would not be a staple beer if it was readably available. Average at best.

I had this beer at both the North Rock Brewing Company and at the Frog and Onion (where it is brewed).

The menu described this beer as essentially an IPA. I was dubious of this often made claim.

It pours a pale copper with active carbonation and a smallish, clingy head with good retention. The aroma is citrusy with a bit of pine and sweetish malts. There are also some hard to describe sherry aromas that are probably yeast related. The taste is hoppy for a beer at a tourist bar catering to Heineken drinkers (Im sorry if I sound like a beer snob, I am a beer snob). Citrusy herbal hops get humbled by a doughy rye bread maltiness. Banana and passion fruit esters abound. The finish is bitter and shortlived. The mouthfeel is prickly with active carbonation.

A decent English Pale Ale, could have a more complex, fresher malt profile.

I talked to the brewer at North Rock, he said this beer is brewed with Magnum and Glacier hops and that he brews all the beers by himself at Dockyards (in the Frog and Onion).

6 oz. pour, sampled at The Frog & Onion (The Dockyards/Bermuda).

All North Rock beers are now being brewed by Dockyard Brewing Co., on premises of F&O. NRBC then sells them at their South Road pub under the same names.

Description (from menu): "Commonly referred to as IPA this highly hopped brew is packed full of flavour with sharp bitter finish. British soldiers serving in the far flung colony of India would appreciate this ale, which can be enjoyed with a variety of meals". ABV not listed.

A: Clear auburn orange with modest rising carbonation. Dots of lace cling on the glass; head is a creamy ivory, dropping with a sudsy ring.

S: Mild toasted grain (caramel), but virtually no hops.

T: Modest bittering, definitely a milder English Pale ALe. Light caramel malts with an oddly tangy citrus. Flavors aren't robust but are in balance.

M: Lasting grassy, slightly medicinal hop bittering. Medium body (especially compared to several other thin offerings by this brewery), gentle carbonation, clean finish.

D: Nothing to get too excited over, but easy enough to drink, flavorful and balanced. Sessionable - I'd estimate ABV is around 5%. I'd drink it again.

Sample at the Frog & Onion in Bermuda: Pours a clear, pale amber color with a wispy off-white head. Balanced malt and hops in the nose. Medium, smooth body with a moderately sweet malt and fruit flavor, along with some hops. The finish is mildly malty with a fruity aftertaste. As with the other North Rock beers it is passable.
