22oz. Bomber

Pours a very nice black color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice one-finger creamy tan head, with some nice small islands and thich creamy sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty with lots of chocolate/toffee, slight roast note. The taste is awesome, malty, sweet, with some dark fruits, some vanilla, slight roast note. Medium/Full body, smooth. Very drinkable, what an awesome brew, so glad I finally got a chance to try it, Thanks Chuck!

On tap at ACBF, 2 samples, at a quiet table, reviewed from notes.

Pours the anticipated black and oily, under a dark tan head, leaving plenty of dark tan lace. Rich, bold and tasty stout. I get notes of coconuts, bourbon, rich chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, dark malts via the nose and tongue. Over the top bitter/sweet, complex and full of RIS goodness. Seek out and enjoy

Review #200. Had on tap tonight (4/5/10) at Churchkey in Washington, DC. This was the 2009 SC and was served in a 10 oz. snifter.

a - Pours a dark brown with one finger of brown head and nice lacing and froth.

s - Smells of cocoa, sweet chocolate and malts, roasted malts, and maybe some dark fruit. As it warms up, got a little coffee as well.

t - Tastes of bitter chocolate up front, followed up cocoa, roasted malts. As it warms up maybe a little vanilla and dark fruit.

m - Medium body and low carbonation, very smooth and creamy. Very easy to drink.

d - Overall I thought this was a great beer. I've had 09 and 10 SC and think the 09 is much better. I think the time on it lets the hops fade and lets the chocolate and some other flavors like the dark fruit come out more. For 9.75% ABV this is very drinkable and I can't wait to try my bottles of 2010 SC with some time on them.

Got a tasty looking growler of this from kkipple. Stayed well in the growler too as there is plenty of carbonation. Also gotta thank Lunch for bottles I can now age.

A: Nice fluffy thick head, super pitch black color.

N: Lots of dark malts, some chocolate with bakers and dark choc, but not as much as I expected. A slight milk chocolate too. Tons of roast though, with a touch of coffee, caramel, toffee, and luscious dark malts.

T: Similar to the nose, starting with tons of dark malts. Lots of roast with a touch of coffee, some chocolate malts with hints of bakers chocolate and dark chocolate as well as touch of chocolate milk. Rich and thick, chewy, and slightly creamy. Tons of bitterness from the roasted charred malts which brings some minerality with it. Slightly sweet with a little chewiness and caramel.

M: Thick and creamy, slightly smooth, and pretty good carbonation for being in a growler, shipped, and stored in a fridge for a couple weeks.

F: Slight sticky syrupy finish, still semi sweet with lots of roasted malt bitterness and lingering minerality. Some roasted malt flavor lingering with a touch of chocolate and some caramel. Overall nothing like I expected. A lot more malt and roasted malt especially forward and much less chocolate than I was expecting. Still a great beer, not too sweet, good roast, hides the booze well, but did have a little heavy on bitterness from the charred malts and somewhat of a misnomer name. Can't wait to try this aged a couple years.

Bottle # 15.
Appears an opaque black with a deep, dark tan head that quickly fades out. Tiny speckles of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of cocoa, ripe fruit, Baker's chocolate, and a hint of smoked malts.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with more of a black grape flavor pulling through. Again, a hint of smoke is detected.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy, fruity, with mild spices and a burnt grain like flavor smaking me before the swallow.
Pretty good beer but it didn't live up to the hype IMO.

22 oz bottle into a snifter. Thanks to Barscream for splitting one of his bottles that we got at the official release back in February.

Pours an absolute dense black with a ½ finger of burnt mocha (with an almost red tinge) colored head. Great creamy retention that flairs up instantly when swirled and leaves a big cascade of lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma is chock full of rich chocolate notes, tons of zippy coffee, dark roasted malts, a bit of smoke, and just a tingle of heat.

The taste is once again a thick blend of chocolate and roasted coffee bitterness that do a very good job of balancing each other out. Some sticky dark fruit tang emerges the more it warms, as does some subtle notes of roasted smokiness. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a creamy carbonation up front that slickens out a bit toward the finish. The overall feel has definitely smoothed out with a little time in the bottle. A bit of the sharp bitter edge that I found this to have back at the release has definitely been taken off. A nice amount of heat is present that imparts an all around warm and sticky sensation on the palette.

I'm glad to have tried this now on both draft and in the bottle and my opinion hasn't changed. This is still a solid upper tier RIS with an all around solid character and good drinkibility for its size. I was also happy to see that a bit of age had helped smooth out the overall flavors and feel some as well. A very nice brew from the folks at Foothills.

Pours an opaque black, attractive brown highlights, nice dark tan head, very thick, super retention, drops some nice lacing as it settles down to a thick ring. Smell is some dark fruits and alcohol, chocolate, big roastiness, toffee, intense burnt fruit, more roast, very nice. Taste is tons of chocolate, nice roast, toffee, lots of dark fruit, burnt currants, alcohol, some sherry, bit of pine, molasses, intense finish, flavours aren't as integrated as I expected though, lots of fighting, but lots of intensity. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation, very smooth. Maybe with some age the flavours will meld together a little bit more. Regardless, thanks Russ for the fantastic beer!!

What a treat to finally sample this beer. Many, many thanks for bringing this gem Dyan; a beer I've been wanting to try for some time. Trying this beer blind made the experience all the more interesting and enjoyable I thought.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with very good head retention and lacing. On the nose this beer is hugely impressive, with licorice, black cherry, coffee, vanilla, nuts, bourbon and milk duds. Very, very nice. Flavors on the palate are not quite as intense or impressive as the nose, with flavors of coffee and chocolate dominating the flavor profile. Regardless, the beer is still quite delicious and impressive, with a very full, rich mouthfeel. Finish is a bit boozy, and I dare say a single glass is probably all I could do. Nevertheless, this is clearly a very fine RIS.

Sampled from gravity pour multiple times at Brewvival.

Pours black with a thin tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts with semi-sweet chocolate and tobacco. Also present are very slight hints of boozy figs.

Tastes even better than it smells. Perfect amounts of roasted malt and dark chocolate flavors kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are smooth tobacco flavors and lighter chocolate. Very light amounts of smokiness join in midway through the sip before being overtaken by slight amounts of dark fruit flavors. The dark chocolate, roasted malt, and tobacco flavors push aside the dark fruit flavors and carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this beer benefitted from the cask treatment as the cocoa nibs were able to shine with gusto. My one qualm with the cask conditioning is that the mouthfeel suffers slightly. Still, if you see this beer on cask don't hesitate, it'll go fast as it well should, very much worth a shot.

2009 Batch. I've had a few bottles of the 2008 batch but failed to review them. This is the first time I've had this batch.

Poured into my Deschutes snifter, the beer is dark brown, almost to the point of being black. The brown head is huge and beautiful. The retention is excellent. Lacing is plastered everywhere on my glass.

The aroma is rich, dark, bittersweet chocolate, with roasted malt. Dark fruits are evident and the coffee character is understated, which I'm quite happy about. Rich chocolate and roasted malt with a trace of alcohol.

The flavor is bittersweet dark chocolate. It's quite rich, but not overly sweet as the roasted character of the malt won't allow that. The bitterness is low-medium. There are notes of dark fruits and a hint of coffee. The alcohol is well hidden by the rich malt profile. Hops impart bitterness, but their flavor was left fettered in a dungeon in Atlantis. The finish is long, rich, and complex.

Full bodied with low-medium carbonation and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel.

This is one of, if not the best Chocolate Imperial Stout I've had. It's not overwhelmingly sweet, giving it remarkable drinkability for an imposing style.

February 2010 release bottle #536/1000. Enjoyed with Slatetank and Kegatron. Poured into a snifter, this brew appears black in color with a dark brown head about a finger strong. The cap recedes to just a lacing across the top with leggy lacework sticking to the glass. When held to the light some clarity is seen around the edges with lighter brown and some reddish hues. A swirl revives the cap back to a finger's strength.

The smell of this brew is dark and fruity like raisins mixed with estery alcohol inclusion. This is a bit of a surprise considering this is suppose to be "sexual chocolate." More smells reveal roasted malt that comes across like a scent of chocolate coupled with tangy alcohol aspects. Some more chocolate indications are present minorly reminiscent of cocoa batter as the brew warms up. Hops seem to be present with a fruity inclusion that accents the alcohol's tangy esters. Overall quite a tangy smelling offering that is dark and fruity.

The taste is bitter roasted grains, lightly charred with raisins and alcohol. Bitter semisweet chocolate is present along with estery alcohol that is quite tangy. There is a minor note of coffee present with lots of roasted elements. The tangy inclusion seems a bit like citrus coffee beans. Much more fruited in flavor than I was expecting. The aftertaste is roasty with chocolate and coffee bitterness.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. It is quite tangy with alcohol and fruity hops intermingled. It is possibly more tangy and fruited than it is chocolaty which is surprising to me. Regardless it is excessively drinkable. As the brew evolved in my glass it took on a bit of a vinous, maybe even port-like quality. Overall a solid offering, one to seek out for sure.

2010 vintage, bottle #276.

A: Black with a tan head, light retention but it leaves an excellent lace.

S: Chocolate covered cherries, brown sugar, hints of fruity esters.

T: Bakers chocolate, demerara, cherries with a hint of tartness, good bitterness, rum-like flavour though the alcohol is relatively subtle (considering the strength).

M: Full body is very smooth, with a slightly drying alcohol finish.

D: An enticing sipper.

Poured dark brown with a decent head. Good retention. Smells primarily of cocoa and some smooth malt. Not dusty smelling as some cocoa smelling beers are and not overly sweet. The taste is also all about the cocoa and a nice backbone of chocolate liqueur. Not overly sweet, but nice deep chocolate flavors without any waxiness and a bit of alcohol comes through as well. Enough malt to keep things firm and together, but there is plenty of pleasant bitterness to stop things from getting too sweet. Somewhat of a one-note beer, but done quite well. I like this a good deal more than the Southern Tier Choklat. Mouthfeel is smooth and somewhat sharp. It could have used a touch more creaminess. Nice to see a Southern brewer hitting it big. This is nice beer, but I'm not sure there should be a frenzy over it.

27/1000 2010 Vintage thanks to kbutler1! Had this side by side with ORF.

Poured into a wine shaped snifter.

pours a light tan head that fades down fast. Color is a deep brown, pretty much black.

Aroma: Deep rich chocolate, reminds me of Belgian chocolate. Rich and roasted malts. Light coffee. Not a big hop profile noticeable.

Taste: Tons of chocolate and again, it reminds me of Belgian chocolate. Roasted malts. Light grassy hops. Some coffee flavors. Basically, just a big chocolate stout.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, and velvety. Decent carbonation with a full body. Ends roasted and dry.

Overall, this is a decent beer, but I think it is a little hyped up. Maybe it would be better with some time on it, but fresh it is nothing stunning. Still, I am really glad I got to try this one.

Enjoyed back on 888, reviewed from fairly meticulous notes. Shared with SAS, Inflatablechair, and theotherbeerguy.

My share poured into a Chimay goblet. The bottle came from a trade of mine with AtlBeerDog a while back.. 295/500.

Brew is black with a tan head that doesn't stick around forever and left spotty lacing.

Aroma is chocolate of course with abundant yeasty fruitiness. raisins and some burnt grains ... maybe a little cherry.

Flavor is more than a little burnt even for a RIS. bittersweet chocolate and cocoa is a little harsh.. cold coffee and raisin and a little bit of plum as it warms. Body seems a little thin for the style and an abundant carbonation doesn't help.

Overall, I will say overrated, but I still want another bottle just to make sure I wasn't too impressed :-)

2011 Vintage! Served from firkin into a shaker. Poured pitch black with a minimal khaki colored head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, and vanilla. THe flavor was of roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, cream, and slight sweet malt. It had a heavy feel on the palate with low-mild carbonation. Overall this was an excellent brew as always. This could probably use some carbonation, which made it better from the tap in my opinion. Had the tap version right after a glass from the firkin and enjoyed it quite a bit more due to the additional carbonation. Good well balanced flavor and aroma going on here. An absolute must try for sure.

A big thank you to drabmuh for sharing this at my last tasting.

A: Near black, good head and lacing.

S: Enticing aromas of roasted malt with hints of chocolate.

T: Very tasty. A beautifully balanced big stout. A slight hop character in the finish adds another level of complexity to this tasty brew. There is less chocolate in the flavor than the name suggests, but subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate make this a pleasure to drink.

M: Crisp carbonation, great feel. ABV masked well.

D: Yes please, may I have another. I seriously need to go to the release next year, provided that I don't get snowed in again.

Appearance: Absolutely pitch black with no highlights. A dark brown three finger head rises from a gentle pour and retains surprisingly well for the style, leaving behind sheets of lace as it slowly settles.

Smell: Fairly mild - chocolate and cream foremost. The aroma hints at molasses and vanilla, but it's subtle.

Taste and mouthfeel: The first thing that leaves an impression on me is how creamy and smooth this stuff is. Chocolate is up-front but only semi-sweet; this tastes more like baker's chocolate than, say, a Hershey's bar. Bitterness is low, probably lower than any other Imperial Stout that I can recall in recent memory, which only adds to its dessert-like quality. The finish is thankfully on the dry side, showing a faint earthy hop bitterness that lingers in a mild way.

Drinkability: Pretty damn high for the style. Not exactly quaffable, but I'd gladly drink it again if I had the chance.

Notes: A big thanks to Loki for this bottle. Hype and rarity aside, this really is a good beer. Worth seeking out for those that like chocolate stouts.

A: Poured from a growler to a pint glass. Had a jet black color and a thick consistency. There was an inch of foam, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A solid aroma of malt, chocolate, fruit and hops.

T: Tasted of dark fruit, licorice, malt, dark chocolate, and light hops. A big, robust flavor with a lot of character. A very complex and well rounded flavor.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a surprisingly dry finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

O: While this beer doesn't quite live up to its hype, it's still a well made, easy to like beer. Drinkable.

Pours jet black with a tan like head. In the aroma, sweet chocolate, roasty malt, and an alcohol hint. In the taste, chocolate, a bit creamy and a roasty malt all the way through. A small bite and a medium to big bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry chocolate aftertaste. 85 IBUs but not too hoppy, hides the alcohol, but can still feel the heat, but a nice chocolate flavor.

I've been wanting to try this one for quite a while so big thanks to kp for opening a bottle at the Brick Store.

This one pours pitch black, with no light coming through at all. The tan head is small and bubbly and leaves good lacing.

This is one of the best aromas I've had in a beer. It's sweet, like malted milk balls - dark malts with sweet chocolate on top. There is dark fruit and hints of coffee as well.

The taste is fantastic as well with a huge roasted malt backbone that is extremely well balance by generous milk chocolate and dark fruit sweetness. The finish actually has a slight espresso bitterness, but only as a complementary piece of this complex brew.

The mouthfeel is so smooth, but with ample carbonation that helps coat the mouth completely in the semi-sweet goodness.

I am thoroughly impressed with this beer and would rate it among my favorite imperial stouts. I may be slightly biased to the sweeter side of things, but either way this is a world class beer. Thanks again to kp for sharing this one.

I drank this 2010 version, bottle #480 of 1000, 22oz bottle into my Orval glass.

The beer pours opaque black with a disappointing less than half a finger of dark tan head. Terrible retention, medium lacing.

The aroma is super light. It gives off mostly cocoa, as you would expect. Its pretty sweet.

The taste is a big surprise, it is totally off from the aroma. It is all bitter coffee. There is no sweetness or any chocolate. The finish is bitter and has some bitter alcohol. As the beer warms up a lot it starts to mellow out on the bitterness and a little more chocolate starts to show itself.

The feel is ok, a little too light for a stout, but a very bitter tacky finish.

Overall, I was really disappointed here. The chocolate is super light in the aroma and it disappears mostly in the taste. If I didn't know better I would think this was a coffee stout. The taste is a big one noter and boring. This has to be a top 100 because of the name and bottle, about the only cool thing here.

The color is practically black, over 70 srm according to the label which is an opaque shade with thick sandy cap that settles rapidly with a tight bead that revives into a thin cap of lace when swirled and lace sticks. The strong chocolate odor has slight spice from the cocoa nibs and light earthy twang of yeast. The slight woody malt aroma is accented by a light caramel sweetness. The texture is slightly dry and bitter with a roasted malt presence and subtle tannic tinge with mild fruitiness and slight spice with hint of yeast creaminess in the middle a gentle bitter taste is present throughout.

The taste has a lot of roast but mild chocolate, the nose carries more cocoa with a subtle spice note perhaps a bitter cocoa nib taste. The yeast adds a gentle twang of dark chocolate and slight coffee-like acidic note with slight berry undercurrent and mild toasted graininess. The dark malt is slightly astringent with a hint of hop bitterness coming in at the end of the taste. This was a great stout, I enjoyed it and was looking forward to having it in bottled form. I enjoyed a small sample on draft at Extreme beer fest, but that was years ago - this was pretty high in drinkability with some nice complexity and fits the style well. I can only guess that this is a beer you may want to taste fresh based on the cocoa flavor subtlety.

appearance: oddly named with a strange label - the infamous afro-wearing nubian princess. served in a snifter, very dark chocolate body - nearly black but not as much as so as other RIS's. creamy tan crest subsides rather quickly and leaves a relatively light lace behind

smell: rich dark chocolate, and lots of it...cocoa nibs, molasses, espresso, licorice - very nice

taste: offhand - reminds me a lot of an aged Rogue RIS - strong waves of dark chocolate, espresso, heavily roasted malts, cocoa. The heavy roast and alcohol leaves a rather bitter followthrough. well rounded - strong and full flavored. a great RIS - seems the hype has died down and this has settled into a rating range that is a bit more appropriate - not top 5-10, but very close

mouthfeel: full bodied, thick heavy roast, lingering bitterness, warms the body

drinkability: actually drinks pretty well, less the bitterness in the finish
