22 oz bottle served in a Deschute snifter. Thanks to rnorgart for the bottle. Bottled February 2013.

A: Pours a dark black color with a dark tan head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin cap that leaves some stick lace down the glass.

S: Smokey with a slight char. Heavily roasted malts with some unsweetened chocolate.

T: Heavily roasted malts with some bitter bakers chocolate. Dark chocolate with some smokiness as well.

M: Medium to heavy bodied with a medium carbonation level. Roasty finish.

O: This was a nice RIS with a light dash of smoke underneath. Would enjoy again, but not in the upper echelon of RIS's.

Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter. Label says February 2013.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains well before receding to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of surface foam. Resilient sheet of crystallized lacing.

S- Dark roasted malt with cocoa and molasses. Also some vanilla and caramel.

T- Smooth dark roasted malt flavor with notes of chocolate and not a whole lot else. Alcohol is nicely hidden. I especially like the aftertaste since the chocolate comes through more there. Slight hint of caramel and vanilla. Somewhat sweet.

M- Medium thickness for the style with medium carbonation and a full body.

O- Quite good but I can see why all the hype surrounded the BA version instead of this base beer. Thank you BlackBelt5112203 for my first taste of Foothills.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that only died down a bit and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of licorice and dark roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste shares some similarities with the smell, except that it is more complex and has additional flavors of cocoa nibs and notes of coffee beans. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness. Only the faintest hints of sweetness are present.
M: It feels nearly full-bodied and rather smooth (and a little creamy) on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a really enjoyable stout that seems to have a good balance between the cocoa nibs and roasted malts. No traces of alcohol are perceptible in the taste.

Appearance: Jet black at its core, with some dark brown around the edges - big, light tan head - keeps a nice cap - leaves some spots of lacing

Smell: Roasty, burnt, and big - dark chocolate, cocoa, chocolate malts - burnt, with a touch of char - something that smells a bit woody, kind of like this was barrel-aged (except it's not) - nicely rich

Taste: Yup, sexy - a range of chocolate flavors - dark chocolate and burnt cocoa - some burnt coffee - a nice, moderate level of sweetness, with a touch of burnt molasses and toffee - some burnt and charred bitterness - lightly acidic overall, finishes very dry

Mouthfeel: On the heavy side of medium, nicely carbonated, very dry finish

Overall: (Insert sex joke here)

This is an undoubtedly solid RIS. There are some nice chocolate flavors, and a lot of burnt goodness. This was better than expected.

Appearance: Pours a creamy near black. Head is tan, creamy, and thick. Drops to.a small rocky cap with a slightly larger collar. Thin sheets and notches of lacing. Relatively clear.

Smell: Tons of chocolate. Bitter cocoa with a strong milk chocolate sweetness. Grassy chocolate and roasted malt. Some backing caramel sweetness. Fudgey. Dark chocolate cake complete with frosting. Baker's chocolate. Husky grain. Sweet and rich.

Taste: So much chocolate. Milk chocolate sweetness, bitter cocoa and baker's chocolate. Nice punch of dark chocolate. Sweet like lactose. Boozy dark hot chocolate. Creamy is a flavor right? Some dark fruit, mostly raisin with a touch of cherry skin in the back. Light touch of alcohol on the finish. Gritty unrefined chocolate. Some touches of roasted coffee bean. Nicely roasted. Solidly balanced.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth. A touch of backing gritty cocoa. Body runs slightly higher than medium with a moderate to low carbonation.

Overall: Chocolate sex potion.

Better than anticipated. A nice use of everything chocolate. Sweet and bitter and worth the name. I'm looking forward to a cellared bottle.

January 2012 Release

Thanks to my mother-in-law for saving this one to share with me on Easter.

A: Pours an opaque yet clear jet black in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation and some light to moderate dark brown, amber, and cola colored highlights. The beer has a half finger tall creamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a small patch of extremely thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark chocolate over the top of roasted malts. There are some very light hints of anise and dark fruit but the primary aroma is that of the chocolate.

T: Upfront there is a light amount of dark roasted malts that is quickly overtaken by the strong flavors of dark unsweetened chocolate (like the bars you get that are 60%+ pure cacao). There are some very light hints of anise and coffee. Very light amounts of bitterness that does not linger for too long.

M: Just shy of heavy bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and creamy.

O: Very easy to drink and very enjoyable - the alcohol is very well hidden and there is a wonderful complexity to the balance. Overall the beer is well balanced by being neither too sweet nor too bitter. Very excited to finally review this one.

sexual chocolate is a great name. i like the smell... smells creamy. and i like black beers and this one is really dark. the taste is nutty and woody.. i dont get much chocolate. its earthy. i have had better chocolate beers..(imperial mokah from southern tier and chocolate yeti from great divide). my biggest problem with this beer was the $16.50 price tag for a 22oz. this is a good beer.... dont get me wrong, but there are better beers for the price.

OG 2006 bottle, who is this HimerMan character.

Pours completely black, with modest khaki head that immediately recedes to a small cap with some soy sauce looking think lacing.

Aromas begin with bittersweet chocolate, dark toffee, dark fruit and molasses. There is also emerging soy sauce element which sounds off putting but should be expected in small quantities with super aged Imperial Stouts.

The tastes follow the nose with some dark and bittersweet cocoa and a lot of dark fruitiness which I couldn't image was here originally. There is also molasses, treacle, seaweed/soy sauce element as well in the background.

Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with low carbonation which is to be expected after all these years. Finish is fairly straight forward, mild cocoa, mild sweet.

Overall I can imagine this being a super revolutionary beer when it was first released but really it is just a good Imperial Stout. It's actually quite drinkable at less than 10% ABV but the flavor profile isn't so exciting that it needs to be sought out each year.

2013 22oz Bomber poured into a snifter

First time having the Sexual Chocolate...a virgin if you will. Big thanks to CarolinaKevin for the bottles!

Nice pour...viscous jet black with a 2 finger dark tan head which slowly dissipates to a lasting foam ring. Looks very nice...among the best I've seen.

The aroma lacks a bit from what I expected to be honest....really was looking for BIG strong chocolate notes but was only hit with slight chocolate, molasses, and some ethanol.

Here we go...the flavor really makes up for what the aroma was lacking. Lots of dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, coffee, dark malts, bitterness from both hops and cocoa. Very nice and well balanced!

The mouth feel is where I feel that this beer really shines...viscous and sweet at first but finishes light with a bit of ethanol. The carbonation is perfect...I hate over carbonated stouts but this one's where it should be.

When I think of my favorite (non-barrel aged) imperial stouts, Founders is on the top of the list, but this one is a serious contender...it may even took first place! Really a great stout that could use a bit more aroma, but ultimately satisfying my Jungle Fever!

Poured from a bomber into a Westbrook tulip.

A: Pitch black, motor oil-esque pour with fantastic 2 finger dark khaki colored head. Head dropped from 2 fingers to 1 after a few minutes but stuck around pretty well after that. Beautiful lacing.

S: A lot of chocolate and coffee on the nose. Maybe a little of booze? Smells about like you would expect.

T: Espresso, bitter dark chocolate, maybe a little molasses? There is the bitterness you would expect from a RIS, but it's not overdone. This is a plus in my book. It's still a sipper, but it doesn't feel work to put it down.

M: Full bodied, medium carbonation. Some creaminess and moderately dry finish.

O: One of the more drinkable RIS's I've had. I'm glad the chocolate wasn't overdone, but I wish there was just a little bit more in the flavor. It's a very good RIS in my mind, but would have been a little better with a little more chocolate given the name of the beer. Maybe it's not the best RIS ever, but it's still a very good beer in my mind and worth a try if you run across one.

A- pours black with a 2 finger dark mocha head. Leaves thick trails and walls of lacing.

S- big chocolate, dark fruits, some roast and coffee.

T- bitter roast, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and some semi sweet molasses.

M- full body and medium carbonation. Thick with some creaminess and slightly dry finish.

O- good RIS, better than I expected actually even with the high rating. Has some sweetness and lots of chocolate, roast, and dark fruits.

I was fortunate to find this beer at a local shop. It was however rather expensive, but due to the scarcity of this one I figured I would bite the bullet and shell out the cash. I chilled it to around 45 degrees and then pried off the cap. I poured it into a Imperial pint glass and let it breath for 10 minutes or so before I tasted. The glass was held up to a light and no transparency. It was very dark nearly obsidian in color. It smelled really nice and rich lots of chocolate, molasses and some coffee but not too much. I do not care for coffee stouts but since this one was more of a chocolate stout I figured I would give it a try. The first taste had a strong molasses taste not too cloying but more molasses than chocolate or coffee to me. As it warmed slightly the chocolate and coffee came in as well as the licorice. However, it still had an overpowering molasses taste. Which for the price and hype of this beer was its downfall. I would have expected more of a cocoa backbone. In regard to mouthfeel it was slightly watery but nothing that was overtly. I felt it was pretty well balanced from a texture point of view. Nevertheless, I would not give this beer as high of remarks as others in its category. Also, for the price it is overrated. As most stouts in this category I imagine this one could be aged. I just wonder if it would improve with age?

A- Dark brown with light brown accents. Barely any foam or signs of carbonation.

S - Lots of roasted and smoked malt with dark chocolate and burnt caramel / molasses

T - Dark chocolate up front with lots of smoked oak in it. More dark chocolate comes next with slight black licorice. The smoke slightly overpowers everything else. Finish is slight espresso and oak.

M - The body is a bit thin with light carbonation. More watery than creamy. Roasted espresso with a slight bitterness in the finish

O - This is a better than average stout but it's not amazing. It's too watery for my taste and I found the smokiness to be slightly overpowering

January 2012 release.

A Nice pour. Very dark. Orange-brown lacy head. Cool hue. About a Half inch.

S Rich syrupy molasses, dark chocolate, dark fruits, leather, and espresso.

T Bitter chocolate up front along with the nice bitter hop additions. Followed by the roasted coffee bean, espresso, and sticky molasses taste. Very mouth coating. Slightly tart with a hint of raspberry. Wood and leathery notes underneath but prevalent.

M A solid drink that lingers with a variety of characteristics.

O Not one of my favorite imperial stouts to drink more often than not. But this one is a nice break with its bittered and flavorful attributes. Might want to pair it with something sweet to balance it out.

A- pours black with a one finger tan head. Retention of the head is solid. Looks nice

S- light chocolate. Not much going on. Maybe past its prime?

T- yeah, definitely past its prime. Getting a little bit of chocolate, and not much else. Slight bitterness. Very blah

M- body is viscous, very solid

O- nearly three years is too much to hold on to this beer. Wasn't a huge fan of it with that much age on it...oh well.

Sexual chocolate

Pours pitch black with a thin layer of brown head that is quick to dissipate. Spotty lacing.

The nose is full of bakers chocolate, dominating the nostrils. There is some roasted malt working it's way around. Quite inviting.

The flavors bring notes of semi-sweet chocolate and roasted malts. The chocolate is smooth and delicious. This is a mighty fine brew.

The mouthfeel is silk-like and.velvety. Heavy and full-bodied. Light carbonation.

Overall, awesome beer that lives up to the hype. Great chocolate flavors here.

A: poured a dark as night black in color with a nice finger worth of head which was dark brown and left plenty of lacing sticking to the glass.

S: not too much going on in the aroma, pretty basic components such as roastiness, some chocolate notes, maybe a hint of molasses and very muted coffee undertones. I did however get some oat grains coming through.

T: like the aroma it carried over to the flavor consisting of milk chocolate notes, slight coffee was noticeable, a bit of roastiness, hints of molasses, and nice oat grain accents with a little bitterness.

M: the brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, roasty, slight astringent, oat grainy, milky, and slight bitter finish.

O: just an average imperial stout that is IMO way overrated but just OK all around. Didn't see anything special about it.

Big thanks to Andrew for the hookup on this one...

A - Pours black with a two finger tan head. Head retention is decent at best, but there is a good amount of lacing to be had...

S - Caramel, chocolate, various dark fruits, coffee, roasted malt and molasses...

T - Caramel, molasses and roast up front with some prunes and figs in the mix. Cocoa also comes through and sticks around all the way through the finish. Lingering figs, a good amount molasses, and a touch of coffee also come through on the finish...

M - Not a light body by any means, but I was hoping for a viscous feel. Sits somewhere on the higher end of the medium bodied scale with a decent amount of carbonation...

O - Overall, a nicely done beer, but nothing that is going to blow your socks off. Definitely glad I got a chance to try this...

Unmarked snifter

A: Pours out a pretty much pitch black. RIS style to a T. I got a slight ring of light tan head around the edges of the glass. Ends up leaving some nice lacing bits. Some reddish hues around edges are there. Slight alcohol feet.

S: Dark chocolate. Dark fruit. Roasted malts. Some dark espresso notes as well. The chocolate is there, rich dark cocoa type chocolate.

T: Up front you get some of those big IBUs, 85 to be exact. Dark rich chocolate. Deep dark roast espresso beans. Some roasted malts. I concur with other reviews, this is a fairly bitter stout either from the hopping or the dark roast malts. It's delicious but just a touch bitter. The finish is really bitter from the dark chocolate.

M: Full bodied. Coats the mouth a ton.

2011 Vintage

A: Pours a deep black with a very nice brown/khaki colored head. Great head retention and lacing that forms all around glass. Really nice looking beer.

S: Something a bit different about the aroma that I can't quite put my finger on. It is slightly astringent, with a good bit of roasted/charred dark malt and a bit of chocolate.

T: Wow, extremely roasty. The roasted malt really dominates the flavor profile, really don't get as much chocolate as I was expecting/hoping. There is a little bit of milk chocolate in the mid-palate which comes across slightly creamy.

M: Medium bodied, on the creamier side, no sign of alcohol at all.

O: Really not very chocolaty. Not a bad stout, but seems rather basic. A bit of a let down based on the hype around it.

Thanks for openings this with me, Wowcoolman!

Black throughout and a substantial, thick-looking body. There's a nicely sized dark brown crown atop that eventually leaves the glass fairly messy on the drink down. Gorgeous imperial stout.

Big, appropriate aroma for the style, with roast and chocolate, very mild smoke and leather, and a coffee component as well. Straightforward, though nice and expressive.

The flavor is similar to the aroma. There's nothing particularly unique or unusual--all the required elements are here: roast, some chocolate, and a little coffee. There's perhaps a touch of smoke or char that differentiates this one somewhat.

Full in body with low carbonation.

Very nice, through straightforward, imperial stout.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, and some char aromas. Taste is much the same with a fairly high level of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp but medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.

2102 Vintage; consumed a week within the release

A - pours lack in color with a small head

S - nose is dark chocolates and some bakers chocolate. Very one-dimensional, but very chocolaty and delicious smelling.

T - starts off with dark chocolates with loads of bakers chocolate in the mix. A little bit of dark fruits are in there too, but chocolate is the thesis of this beer. Not uber complex, but solid.

M - super dry finish with a medium body

D - really nice cocoa / chocolaty brew. Glad I finally got to try this one - worth seeking out.

2011 vintage. 22oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours a deep black color. It's almost solid black but there are some dark brown hues at the sides and bottom of the glass. A small light brown head develops and quickly settles in as a tan ring of foam around the glass. Not much in the way of lacing.

The nose is roasty and full of some nice chocolate notes. The roasted notes come out first. It's almost burnt and quite potent. The chocolate comes through as some light milk chocolate. There really isn't much else going on here. It's pretty straightforward but done nicely.

The taste follows along with the nose. Huge roasted notes up front. As the beer warms it takes on that burnt character. There is some nice dark and milk chocolate that balance the roast somewhat before a huge, dry bitterness takes over at the finish.

Full bodied with low carbonation. As the beer warms the carbonation seems like it may be a bit higher. The beer is really big but doesn't get to the point of being huge and viscous. Extremely dry at the finish.

This is a good imperial stout. It's pretty straightforward in the nose and taste - it's roasty and a it's chocolaty, in that order. Nothing more nothing less. It's pretty exceptional in terms of being really good and interesting without being hugely complex but in the grand scheme of things it's probably just below the the upper tier of big imperial stouts.
