2010 bottle shared last night at a stout tasting.
A: Pours really dark with a nice mocha cap even in my tasting glass. Tons of body on this one, just coats the glass as I swirl away.
S: First and foremost if the chocolate, nice bitter dark chocolate gets pushed to the front by the deeply roasted grains while dark fruit notes float in and out of the mix.
T: I'm getting a lot of chocolate still, as expected, but the cocoa nibs really gave this some nice sweet dark fruit flavors that get brought into balance with the bitter cut. An almost herbal/mineral flavor can be found in the finish. Flavors definitely hang with this one.
M: Medium bodied with carbonation to match, I think a year did this one some good. Body seems spot on with some nice warmth but no real "heat" to speak of.
D: I may now have to seek out the barrel aged version. After getting my bottle last year I was thinking it might actually fall into the over-hyped camp, but considering what I gave up for it I'm very pleased. It really stood out against all the other stouts.

22 oz bottle served in a Deschute snifter. Thanks to rnorgart for the bottle. Bottled February 2013.
A: Pours a dark black color with a dark tan head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin cap that leaves some stick lace down the glass.
S: Smokey with a slight char. Heavily roasted malts with some unsweetened chocolate.
T: Heavily roasted malts with some bitter bakers chocolate. Dark chocolate with some smokiness as well.
M: Medium to heavy bodied with a medium carbonation level. Roasty finish.
O: This was a nice RIS with a light dash of smoke underneath. Would enjoy again, but not in the upper echelon of RIS's.

Had on tap at Sam's Quik Shop in Durham.
Pours a pitch black color with absolutely no head. Smell is chocolate (of course!) though not overwhelmingly so. moderate malty scents. Taste is more of the same, though much more apparent. Its got the typical RIS style taste - dark roasted malts with chocolate and heavy alcohol taste. Holds true to the style here. It's THICK, as you'd expect from the style. It's very full bodied though goes down smooth and easy.
Overall not a world class RIS though definitely above average. Gets a bit too much hype that wouldn't be there if this weren't so rare.
