A - bright yellow; no head

S - faint lemon; cleanser

T - faint lemon, faint spice

M - crisp, very light

This is similar to a light beer that glows and has some faint citrus and lemon to it. It's rather forgettable. There are far better Hefeweizen's out there.

Had on tap.

Appearance is a hazy light to medium yellow with a fizzy white head.

Smells strongly of clove and bubblegum with a little bit of pineapple.

Flavor is clove, banana, and bubblegum. There is a moderate pineapple taste as well which is quite refreshing. One downside would be the mouthfeel is quite watery.

Overall is pretty tasty hefe. Just a little more body would make for a perfect summer thirst quencher.

A: On-tap at Oak Barrel Tavern. Had a pale yellow color and a cloudy consistency. There was a small amount of creamy head that quickly dissipated. Not much lacing.

S: A sweet, somewhat underplayed aroma of wheat, bubblegum and spices.

T: Tasted of wheat, banana, bubblegum, spices and something I couldn't quite put my finger on. A good, solid, refreshing flavor. Generally in keeping with the style.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a fairly crisp finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, this is a well done and flavorful summer beer.

Growler poured into a weizen glass. Hazy light gold body with a modest eggshell head and modest scattered lacing. Nose has plenty of clove and yeast, but seems to lack a bit of grain and wheat punch. Flavor's a bit more lively, and there's a somewhat juicy, refreshing finish. Lemon and wheat are more assertive than clove and banana. An easy drinker, but somewhat lacking in oomph.

Thin white head and hazy blonde body.

Tangy mellow nose: wheaty with some banana.

Pleasant and refreshing-- faint tartness, faint citrus, faint coriander and faint banana. (Yep, pretty 'faint') Well balanced; trace of hops on the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is nice and thick but not overly so and bright carbonation lightens out the body.

Highly drinkable, solid heff. Not crazy or off the wall, but heffs aren't supposed to be. NB: This was the last full pint in the keg.

The beer was served on-tap at the Foothills brewpub.

A-The beer was served with a lacy ring on the pint glass but had little head. The beer itself was a hazy light gold color.

S-There was a clove smell initially that evolved into a rubber/plastic like smell. There was a slight bubblegum aroma persisitant throughout the time it took to drink the pint.

T-There was little to no malt sweetness with a slight grainy tast and a bubblegum like flavor.

M-The hefeweizen had a lighter body with lower carbonation rate than most wheat beers.

O-The beer is a solid example of the style but lacks in character. It is a drinkable session style beer though.

Serving: 8oz Sample Glass (Part of a 9 Glass Sampler)

Apperance: Medium orange in color with a bit of haziness. Small amount of head, but I suspect it would have been little to none if I chose to incorporate the orange slice.

Aroma: Without the citrus, I received the full aroma of the wheat, which still wasn’t very overpowering, subtle if you will.

Taste: Weak, more of an “Americanized” wheat beer.

Mouthfeel: Light, watery for the most part. Goes down very easily though.

Drinkability: Overall, it’s a good summer wheat beer that is easy to drink on a hot day. The average beer drinker probably would enjoy this for the most part, even my girlfriend liked it (she doesn’t drink beer.)

Notes: I decided after review of the previous posts to go at this Hefe sans the orange slice.

Poured from growler a bright pale golden hazed out beauty with 2 inches of fluffy white head with minamal lacing.

Nice bready aroma with a hint of banana & clove. Soft yeasty aromas pull it all together.

Sweet bready yeasty soft sourness that goes well together.

Man o man, this is so soft on the palate, how could anyone be offended by this medium light bodied beer. Spot on carbonation as well, well played foothills.

I find this to be one helluva hefe, drink up for it is only a seasonal.

Served from tap into a sampler tumbler. Poured a massively hazy pale yellow with a one finger pure white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, wheat, and slight skunk. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, skunky, and wheat. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was not my favorite Hefe I have ever had. This one honestly felt a little more lager-ish to me with the skunk aspect going on. If it lost that and added more spice and more banana fruit flavors this one could be really good. Worth trying at least once, but that is about it.

Fresh growler from Bearden Beer Market in Knoxville. Pours a hazed light yellow body with a two finger white head that hangs around a few minutes before throwing off some spiderweb lacing.

Aroma is a bit subtle, but has some classic hefe notes of banana and clove, accented by a twist of fresh lemon and a hint of coriander.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a healthy carbonation. Seems a bit thin for style.

Tastes like a hefeweizen light as a result of the comparatively thin body, but classic notes of banana, lemon, and clove are front and center. A touch of bready malt adds some balance and a hint of grassy hops contributes a balancing bitterness. Finishes clean.

High marks for drinkability due to the light body, good carbonation and citrusy accents but not really topnotch for the style.

Pours a cloudy pale yellow. The rocky/creamy head is big and lasts a long while, leaving lace as it slowly minimizes.

Super (white)bready nose, with polite citrus accents. Yeast far in the background. Pretty nice, but more like a witbier than a hefeweizen.

Flavor is watery citrus (mostly lemon), fresh white bread, a bit grassy, with very faint bubblegum in the finish. Grassy sourness and citrus hang out in the finish too, but it all fades pretty quickly. Lacks the yeasty goodness of a true hefe.

Spritzy feel, yet soft. Thinnish body, but not watery.

Refreshing and acceptable, but drinks more like a witbier than a hefeweizen. Tempted to say Foothills are better at big beer, alcohol and/or flavor-wise (Sexual Chocolate, Seeing Double, Hoppyum), but I had their Torch Pilsner yesterday and it was wonderful. So I guess Hurricane Hefeweizen isn't this brewery's finest, that's all.

On tap at Barley's the other day.

The beer pours a very light hazy gold color with good head retention and lacing. On the nose, I get a fairly lihgt aroma of clove and nutmeg. Fortunately, the beer delivers more flavor on the palate, in this classicly flavored German style weisse. The clove and spice quickly dry out the light sweetness, leading to relatively dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, spice filled finish. Drinkability is quite good, with the alcohol virtually undetectable.

A nice effort from Foothills Brewings.

Growler pour, from a keg that was filled two days prior. A great treat from the folks at Foothills and Green's on Piney Grove Road. Kudos for a great 1 Apr 2010 offering!

Appearance - Light yellow coloring with a good two-finger head forming upon the initial pour. Deep haze (i.e. a Hefe) with a light carbonation feeding the thin ring that retained.

Smell - Nice fresh banana and clove aroma. Crisp yeast nose as well. Somewhat muted, but inviting.

Taste - Light, tart and crisp. Just what you want from your Hefe. Moderate spice middle gives it some depth.

Mouthfeel - This ain't no stout so review it as per the style. Carbonation is a bit light, but I enjoy the fact that it is tongue-coating in the opening and middle. The crisp finish allows for a bit of cleansing.

Drinkability - Nicely done Foothills. Great offering fresh. I would be intersted to see what "legs" this sexy offering has.

Draft at the brewpub.

A - Clear light golden color with a lasting white head.

S - Wheat, banana, clove, and citrus. Smells pretty nice, if a bit weak.

T - Wheat and pale malt, yeast, banana, and lemon. A little watery but overall the flavor is pleasant.

M - Very light and crisp on the palate, if a little weak.

D - Well, because it's a bit watery and is a fairly light style to begin with, this goes down like flavored water. So I have to give it points here.

Hurran Hefeweizen, served with a slice of orange (ugh) at Foothills, Winston-Salem, NC. Served in a traditional American pint glass.

Appearance: Arrives with no head - thanks, orange slice - and presents a slightly-hazy-though-not-hazy-enough golden/orange-hued body. Only the thinnest ring of lace and only a few streams of large bubbled carbonation present themselves. Little to no lacing, either, probably indicative of poor head retention anyway, with only a few blobs sticking around for any extended period of time.

Aroma: Weak weak weak, with only faint citrus and a pale underlying sweetness making any effort to emerge from this one.

Taste: A little too citrusy, perhaps, with large and dominating orange notes and less strong but still in your face lemon notes. A few spicy overtones and a soft sweet wheat note round this one out. There's no nuttyness or banana yeast notes, unfortunately, making this more of an American wheat beer than a hefeweizen of any kind.

Mouthfeel: A thin to medium bodied brew with enough carbonation that it becomes a little explosive and uneven.

Drinkability: More of an American wheat than a hefeweizen - despite the haze, there's just not much yeast character here, which is really what makes the hefe such a unique beer. Also, the orange slice is a huge strike - I understand they're trying to appeal to a certain style of drinkers with that, but still, come on. Also, tou're a craft brewery - serve your beer properly. I can see this being moderately refreshing to some, but it's not really for me. Just a little too simplistic.

Put this on tap at home as my wife was looking for a good hefe. Appearance was orange with plenty of head and good lacing. Smells of banana and clove with a hint of citrus. Much to my suprise, tastes like a traditional German hefe. Very fresh with a good malt presence. Very drinkable and probably the best NC Hefe I've had to date.

Had this on Friday at the brewpub.Not a style I get very often but it was a pretty hot and a hefe sounded better than usual.Came in a standard pint glas a hazedlemony yellow with just a hint of orange,a thinner but well sustained head atop.Mild grainy aroams with a a slight banana and clove note,flavors a re pretty standard for the style light clove spice with some lemon,a sugary-like finish was a little odd.Foothills makes grat brews but this was pretty standard if that in my opinion.

On tap at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Cloudy golden with decent head.

Smell is muted, citrus, and yeast, not a whole lot else.

Taste is unfortunately also very muted. Citrus, wheat, the vaguest hint of something else in there, bubblegum and clove?, but it needs to come out more. A slightly metallic finish, perhaps even the same english-type hops flavor I get with many of the other Foothills brews (e.g., Pale Ale and ESB). In those, it's welcome, in this style, not so much.

Mouthfeel crisp.

This wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable either. The flavors in this just need to come out more.

BRight gold but only slightly hazy body. You could really see right through the glass. There was also absolutely no head or lacing, which is a must for this style. Not quite what you're looking for in a hefe.

Big yeast action happening here, too much for my taste. The fruity undertones were more overtones and there was a pretty noticeable sulfur smell there as well.

All the flavors were there pretty well, except it was much too bitter for a hefe. It finished bitter instead of slightly fruity and that's just not what you want for this beer.

Mouthfeel was on-target.

There are a lot of things that are out-of-whack with this beer. It was palatable, but really a mutated version of the style.

Pours a hazy gold with a finger of creamy brite-white head. Retains well around the edges with some thin wisps across the center, leaving some thick lacing behind. The aroma is not assertive at all but I still pick up notes of lemon, clove, wheat, and a bit of bubblegum yeast. I just wish that it was all a bit more prounounced than what it is.

The taste is a little more aggressive with a firm wheat base surrounded by notes of lemon citrus, spicy clove, some banana, and an underlying hop profile. Finishes dry with a touch of bitterness on the palatte. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a firm feel and poppy carbonation.

A decent Hefe offering from Foothills, I just wish that the taste, and especially aroma, where I little more memorable. Still, the crisp body and drikibility of this still remained quite refreshing and I wouldn't turn down a pint on a hot day.

Had this on tap at Foothills. Nice cloudy deep golden color. Absolutely no head to this at all; just a little rim around the top. Smells very citrusy with a little clove and strong wheat/yeast. Very crisp clean taste. Can definitely find the strong yeast taste, but it mellows out as I drink this. Fairly smooth and balanced. Not a bad brew from the guys at Foothills. Refreshing.

Poured a nice light yellow amber with a small white head that quickly faded leaving behind no real lace. Visible carbonation was eveident in the clear liquid before me. Smell was light, with hints of a fruity citrus mixed in. Lots of grain flavors were pronouned. First impression was nice and lite with a good profile to it. Not slimey and not too light, really a good sit down session beer here. Could have been a bit more carbonated, but really a fine beer. Could definatly throw down a few of these on a warm night, and already have.

a: Pretty clear golden in color. Just a touch of haze, but not quite as much as I'd expect or prefer. Sparse white head soon recedes most of the way.

s: This one's pretty bland overall. Citrus seems to dominate with a backing of clean wheat. Needs depth (more clove, yeast, etc.). Some might call it watery.

m: carbonation on the low side of the medium range, and the body lighter but not thin

t: Clean wheats with dominant chalky citrus notes. I seem to get some of the yeast and clove that was missing on the nose, but it's way back. Again, it's a solid hefe foundation but lacks that yeasty complexity I like so much. Lightly hopped.

d: easy enough

On tap at Barley's Taproom in Asheville.

Hurricane is a hazy, straw-gold beer, with a lean, still, white head. Tiny dark bubbles rise to the surface, when held to the light they're quite pretty. Your basic Hefe, could've done with more head, but that's how it arrived.

I'm slightly disappointed by the smell of Hurricane, it's just lacks the "oomph" I like in a Hefe. I get a mild orange / lemon citrus note, some yeast and malt, but everything is quite subdued. It really needs a little more sharpness, some spice (clove would be great) and a bolder wheat presence to roll with the big guys.

The flavor equally plays it safe, this is a watery Hefe (think Harpoon UFO instead of Weihenstephaner) with wheat, light malt and some banana and spice. Sadly, everything tastes muted, like I'm drinking a beer when I've got a cold. Foothills needs to crank the flavor profile on this up a notch and it'd be great. As it is, it's easy to drink, but is too tame.

The mouthfeel, as in all Foothills beers, is fine. Clean, crisp, smooth and very drinkable. If that seems like the word on all my Foothills beer reviews, it's 'cause it's true! This is one aspect they have no trouble with.

Overall, Hurricane is a decent, if bland, wheat, and would probably be a good intro to the style for beer neophytes. This could be a great beer, if Foothills decides to sharpen it up.
