A - Clear dark amber with a good head and lacing.
S - A bit of a soapy nose? Light hoppiness, some graininess and a strong alcoholic tinge.
T - Spicy, not terribly bitter for a DIPA and medium sweetness. Pine and grapefruit hops.
M - Hard carbonation but the body has some moderate heft and smoothness.
D - Feels like a bit of a different IPA - booziness and balance makes this feel more like a sipper to me.

Served on tap at Foothills Brewing Company in Winston-Salem, NC.
A: Pours a mostly clear bright golden orange in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that slowly reduces to a large patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of citrus/grapefruit/orange and pine hops.
T: Upfront there is a moderate amount of caramel malt sweetness with big flavors of citrus/grapefruit/orange and pine hops. Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly creamy with light to moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.
O: A little too big of a DIPA to really be easily drank - there were some hints of the alcohol in the mouthfeel and just a touch in the taste. The beer was very enjoyable with really nice flavors and aromas.

On tap at Barley's, Asheville, NC.
Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and very good lacing.
The smell featured a balmy citrus hop.
The taste consisted of balmy resinous citric hops atop a sweet pale malt.
The mouthfeel ws typical of the style.
Overall a tasty and well done DIPA.

Appearance: orange in color with a short 1/2" head that breaks down to a spotty surface foam.
Smell: loads of hop presence here. Caramel, citrus, and some pine rise from the glass and into the nose.
Taste: big caramel flavors with loads of orange and pineapple citrus. Bitterness is very bold but not overpowering at all. Alcohol is very well hidden here.
Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and dry at the finish. Long lasting bitterness here.
Overall: this was very easy to quaff despite the high alcohol level. Nicely refreshing for any hophead looking for double IPA fix. Great beer.

Appearance is a slightly cloudy amber/orange. Head was small (bartender's pour?) and white and receded into a ring. Some lacing at the top. Smell, oh my the smell, is primarily of citrusy orange hops but also features some nice floral hops. Malt sweetness also makes an appearance in the nose. Taste is of strong yet refreshing tangerine/orange citrus hops and a hint of floral hops backed by a sweet malt strong enough for the hops yet surprisingly mellow. Finishes with some moderate IPA bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium weight and body with a slight alcohol burn and some mouth coating hop oils.
Very good DIPA that is remarkably similar to 90min. Hides its alcohol quite well, only Hopslam defeats it in that regard. Best NC DIPA I've had and something I would order again in a heartbeat.

On draft at Barley's Taproom in Asheville, NC. Served in a goblet.
Pours deep amber with half finger pale white head. Very little lacing.
Fairly subtle nose. Citrisy hops with some sweet bread too.
Big bitter hops of all kinds- citris, piney & floral. There's enough malt to keep them under control.
Nice full thick, near syrupy. Leaves a pleasant bitter hoppy coating after each sip. Mildly carbonated.
A well done double IPA. Great body with a quite nice hop complexity. I'll definately have this again.

I payed a visit to the brewery thinking that it was the tapping of Sexual Chocolate. I received some bad info, and was a couple weeks off. I noticed the Seeing Double on the board and figured it was worth trying. The color was a dark burnt orange, very thin head disapearing fairly quickly. The aroma, OH THE AROMA. Pungent with mango or papaya very floral.
The ABV was very present in the smell, however not in the taste. Very rich, very complex. I enjoyed every sip from the first. The addition of malts really calms the massive amount of hops. Genius. Best DIPA I've had to date, hands down. Prost!

Enjoyed on-tap @ the Mellow Mushroom in Asheville, NC for $5. Tapped from an unknown tap handle (sitting @ a table) into a 16oz Pint Glass.
Aroma- Lightest mango, malty and hoppy aroma hits the nose first. Light all around and VERY tough to find any attributes out.
Appearance- Received with a 1 Finger head that dies quickly. Has a dark orange body and leaves good lacing behind.
Flavor- A mango hop flavor starts this guy off. A bit of citrus also hits the palate and a medium-full bitterness level is present. Nothing overpowering though!
Mouthfeel- Medium-Full Bodied, Light-Medium Carbonation, Smooth, and beautiful! Tastes continue on the palate with full flavor and fruit.
Overall Impression- This was one of my favorite IPA's I've had in a LONG while but not a 2X IPA! Not enough strength and bitterness to be this style. Still would recommend enjoying this if you have a chance or if in the East. The only way you would be "seeing double" is if you would drink more than one... Didn't even notice the ABV's.

On tap in a pint glass
White head, slightly off copper and slightly hazy, beautiful lacing with rings all of the way down the glass for each sip
Deep pine aroma
Little bitter at first with a nice pine finish
Mouthful you get a little alcohol at the end on the way down, but very well balanced for a double IPA.

poured a mostly clear, orangey-dark amber with a one finger white head leaving a great looking silky lace on the sides of the glass. aroma was slightly floral, but had plenty of citrus and pine notes and a touch of earthy grain. flavor was a well balanced mix of citrus sweetness up front, followed by the caramel sweetness and finishing with lingering pine resin bitterness. this was not the hop bomb of a IIPA which have become so common. if not for the 9.5% abv, which was well hidden btw, this would be very sessionable. a very enjoyable beer!

On tap at the Village Draft House
Arrived a hazy orange with a thin lacing of head. Smell is floral hops and fruity alcohol esters. Taste is an initial mild, sweet maltiness followed by good amount of floral, fruity hops. Very well balanced. As the beer warms the alcohol adds warmth to the finish and is a nice compliment to the malts and hops. Mild carbonation; medium to full bodied. This beer is dangerously drinkable at 9.5%.
One of my favorite DIPAs especially within NC. I really look forward to the day that Foothills begins to bottle regularly and expand their distribution. Any IPA fan needs to try this.

Cloudy amber with a filmy head and average amount of lace. Very muted aroma, some caramel, some pine. Medium-high amount of carbonation and medium body. Earthy front, some caramel sweetness middle, and earthy hop finish. An interesting contrast to the piney/citrusy hopped DIPAs. Some of the alcohol is noticeable in the finish, but generally well disguised.
Update: 3/21/13
From a bottle purchased 1/30/13. Consistent with draft with less carbonation and no pine aroma. Definitely a more herbal/earth hop profile.

one of those "how haven't I reviewed this before" ratings - had this one many times over the years, was somewhat surprised to find it where I did...
a: served in a standard pint glass, Seeing Double is a sunny orange-amber in color, sporting a full khaki head with good retention and light lacing
s: big aromas of juicy citrus on a body of pale and caramel malts, full and slightly sweet, orange, grapefruit, young pine, the hops are vivid and the malts just right, great start
m: carbonation moderate, the body medium with a sugary malt weight
t: loads of juicy citrus hop flavors - orange and grapefruit, fresh and flavorful with a strong bittering component that's slightly piney, riding a full pale malt body with a distinct caramel sweetness, lightly toasted malt, love the hop flavors here and the malts provide a great structure, nicely sweet to start but cleaning well before becoming a hindrance
o: a great dipa that's big, but not overdone, really liked this one, it's about as balanced as the style comes, fantastic on a warm spring day in the Virginia mountains
draft at Beer Run, Charlottesville

A: Pours a dark, hazy orange with a finger of dense white head that sticks around for the haul. It leaves a solid sheet of white lacing down the sides.
S: smells surprisingly light, with light citrus notes and some grassy aromas.
T: taste is similar to the aroma with a lot of light citrus and pine notes with a light bitter finish. Nothing in your face and an overall very light DIPA.
M: medium-light body and carbonation.
D: goes down pretty smooth with its light characters.
Overall a decent DIPA, but a bit too light for my liking.

Pours hazy tangerine orange with a giant foamy head. Lacing all over the glass. Very attractive.
Smells of citrus hops with a balance of light sweetness.
Very well balanced taste. Bitter, but not overly so. This might be the most well structured citrus leaning IPAs I've had.
Mouth is medium, but coating. Drinks very very well.

Pours a very nice cloudy dark orange. Typical IPA aroma of citrus and pine. Great lacing on the glass., Very good flavor, quite bitter as expected. Hides the abv well. I have had this one bottled before and as is almost always the case the draft version is superior. Good overall representation of the style.

The beer was served in a Foothills shaker pint glass from Tyler's Taproom in Carrboro NC.
A-The beer was a cloudy orange color and had only a slight head of foam clinging around the edges of the glass.
S-Initially, there was a burst of candy-like citrus aroma similar to orange or tangerine. This was backed up by a piney/pungent aroma that had some vegetal and herbal notes. Finally, as the beer warmed you could pick up some alcohol aromas that were faint in the background. The overall aroma was good but it seemed controlled and/or limited for the Double IPA Style.
T-There was an initial malt sweetness that changed into a smooth but distinct bitterness. The hops were not harsh and there was an herbal grassy taste that accompanied the hops. The bitterness did not linger as the beer was swallowed. There also was a slight fruity taste to the beer that was enjoyable.
M-The beer had a medium body with a low level of carbonation.
D-Overall, this beer didn't drink like a 9% abv beer. While the body was squarely in the "medium" range it did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the pint. The level of hop aroma and the light carbonation made for an enjoyable beer.

On tap at Foothills, served in a weighted becher glass. Neat. Beer is hazy and orange with a thin off white head of small bubbles, leaves lacing on the glass and carbonation is low.
Aroma is resiny, piny, earthy, it has that hop bite but not much of a malt backbone, this is the way an IPA should smell.
Beer is thick and chewy, a mildly dry finish, not much sweetness on the lead off. The hop bitterness is high and lasting, it doesn't linger, fortunately this IPA isn't so dry that you get that cotton hop mouth. I killed this beer quickly and would drink more and more of it. I regret not buying a growler.

I had this on tap at the brewery on Sexual Chocolate Day 2011.
A: Very murky, yet with an extremely bright orange color. I could look down into the glass and almost see solid hop and crystalized sugar formations. Thick, thick, thick!
S: Very citrusy, yet is had a bit of that doughy quality that Hoppyum also had. Very dense hoppy aroma and sweet as hell!
T: A sipper for sure... but the sugar content was not nearly as overpowering as I thought it was going to be. Dry on the finish, but not in a bad way. Grapefruit, orange, maybe a hint of peach, all wrapped up in a croissant!
M: Very thick, under carbonated, and candy-like. No real complaints here. However, you must love sugar and hops to appreciate this beer.
D: Despite the octane, I found myself drinking this one fairly fast. Good beer.

On tap in a shaker pint, a hazy dark honey colored brew. Light scattered lacing is left from the finger's worth of foamy head.
Lots of citrusy hops and caramel in the nose. Smells like it's gonna be one of those big hearty and juicy DIPAs, and that's what it proves to be. The caramel sweetness seems to snowball throughout the consumption of the pint. A little thickish and coating as well. Too malty, but there's plenty of citric hop flavor. Bitterness somewhat lacking (or unable to cut through the sweetness), but it's tasty. A bit of burn in the finish. No grit, no dryness. Rather boozy finish.
Overall impression: Another 'overmalted' east coast (D)IPA. Foothills makes some fine brews, but this one's forgettable.

this beer blew me away especially from being brewed right down the road from me. it has an amazing mouthfeel with a sweet start and a strong hoppy finish with is exactly what im looking for from a DIPA. the pour is a really rich orange gold color with good carbonation and a good head that will stick around for a few. this beer for me has been kinda touchy being maltier one week at the pour house to beings a little hoppy the next week but either way i think it is something everyone should try and in my opinion the best beer brewed in NC.

Had this as part of a four-beer sampler over at Duckworth's. Kicked things off with Foothills' Hoppyum IPA, then stepped my game up by over three percent alcohol content with this Double.
It's a good Double, for sure; but I am a little partial to standard IPAs. I'll try to not let my bias affect this review too much.
Pretty appearance. Didn't look to be any more menacing than the Hoppyum, or the Dale's Pale Ale that was also part of the four-pack. Oh, but my parents taught me well: Never judge a book by its cover. And ladies and gentlemen, the same must be said for beers: Never judge a brew by its shade.
As soon as I took a whiff of this baby, I knew I was in a different league. Huge floral, hoppy tones that made the back of my throat tingle with anticipation. It smelled SWEET. The maltiness was poking its head through. I could tell through my nostrils that this beer packed a punch.
It tasted...good. I can't say great, because it was really just too malty and sweet for me. Again, that's probably my bias. Very thick and syrupy in my mouth.
Honestly, the 4.5 ounce portion I got of this beer was enough for me. I'd certainly enjoy a full pint of the stuff; I'd just be spinning after a couple of them. But, this beer is very good for what it is. Perhaps as I get a little more hardcore in my beer consumption, I'll rate this beer considerably higher.

Reviewed from notes.
Pours a burnt orange-copper color with a white head that starts out at about two fingers and sticks around for a while. Good nose with some citrus rind and a bit of tropical fruit. Taste brings more sweet malt to the fore with a tad of citrus. Sweet and bitter in the feel; not a bad combo but definitely toward the East Coast end of the spectrum.

Draught at Brixx in Chapel Hill.
I want to give this an A+, it was so close.... the smell was perfectly citrusy-piney, first swallow seems perfect, but I would have preferred more carbonation, and then the finish has much too pronounced alcohol, and the malt lingers.... so close, but still excellent, as everything that I have had from Foothills is.

served in a chalice, o hell yeah, and brought to me on the patio at the ba sc release, this gem of a double ipa was consumed on 08/27/2010.
the pour is a deep, deep, orange color with a nice and smooth round head of white on top and very hazy and cloudy body, awesome.
aroma is a deep resin filled hops and a wonderfully sweet candied sugar nose that just hits you perfectly. so thick and really full, this easily had the most perfect feel for a big double i have ever seen. one of the standouts for sure. deep resin filled flavor as each sip starts with a rush of pine sap and orange and finishes with a blinding amount of beautiful candied sugar. super dry finish and a warmth from the alcohol make the whole trip worth it.
one of the best regional ipas out there, no questions ask. go try this immediatly, do not pass go and go get it!
