Beer bottle (33 cl.) purchased from La Cervoiserie, and tasted in 2013.

Appearance : orange colorr, with white foamy head (w lacing).
Smell : hoppy and grassy aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : caramel, hops and spices flavors, with a bitter long duration.
Drinkability : a nice beer in the style Imperial IPA.

Bottled the 5th of March this year so it is pretty fresh.

A slightly hazy amber beer with a white head that fades away pretty quickly.
Lots of carbonation streaming up to the surface.

Woohoo! Big fruity amarillo in here! Smells really fresh. Great!
Big mango. Malt is light.

A pretty big beer, a caramel maltiness, pretty hoppy and some of that amarillo fruitiness again. I am not having this chilled actually, should have chilled it a little bit. The mainland bittering hops (Sladek and Saaz) are present. The bitterness is pilsener like, unlike beers made solely with these fruity West-Coast hops. It works rather well together. As it sits in your mouth is is rather sweet with the malts and the fruitiness from the hops. As you swallow the bitterness becomes stronger with the Czech hops. The alcohol is very well hidden.

Very pleasant. Well balanced, the sweet malts work well with the hops.

Mouthfeel is medium, thicker than most IPA's (maybe because it is a DIPA).
Pretty low carbonation.

If you see this fresh, get it as it is very good!

330ml bottle. De Molen doesn't exactly keep their single-hop offerings in the same base beer ballpark, do they? And this isn't even single-hopped, just the name is.

This beer pours a hazy medium brickish orange hue, with one finger of very bubbly, loosely foamy off-white head, which leaves a bit of spectral, swirling galaxy lace around the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of bitter citrus, creamed caramel, pine resin, strong green herbal notes, an uncertain drupe fruitiness, a hint of distant smoke, and alcohol-soaked bread pudding. The taste is zingy grapefruit, orange, and lime rind, somewhat bready caramel malt, a soft creamy nuttiness, musty toffee, earthy honey, fibrous pine, and a slightly grassy, herbal hoppiness.

The carbonation is rather soft and lulling, with just a minor twinge here and there, the body a sturdy medium-full weight, dead smooth, and more than a little creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, the caramel cream essence having mostly subsumed the bitterness of the hops.

A pretty tasty malt-forward DIPA, the hops (no initial slouches of their own) seeming to have difficulty finding purchase. However, there is a hefty dose of 'the whole is greater than the sum of the parts' theme running through this offering, so it becomes easy to just sit back and enjoy the robust, balanced flavours, while the clearly obscured (heh) booze works its magic.

Served on-draught into De Molen stemware at De Molen in Bodegraven. Reviewed from notes taken July 2010.

A: Pours a three finger head of soft delicate cream, nice thickness, and great retention. Body colour is a semitrnasparent dark copper.

Sm: Caramelized malt, cream, and fresh full barley. A mild strength aroma.

T: Caramelized malt, cream, well handled amarillo (my favourite!) hops, and some bland watery notes. De Molen's watery problem strikes again. Badly built and balanced due to the watery character. Tries to be complex, but ultimately all its notes drown and thin out.

Mf: Smooth and wet - too much so on both counts. Doesn't complement the flavour profile well.

Dr: Very drinkable for its high ABV, but the taste is lackluster. Highly priced at De Molen for its low quality (even some of the imperial stouts were cheaper). Give her a spin, but don't expect anything phenomenal.

Dark amber brown color with a thin head, usual for the style. Delicious aroma of fruity hops, tons of passion fruits floating around. Medium body with good carbonation.
Incredible hidden alcohol, just numbs your gums (it is 9.2% ABV!) but not your taste. It has an excellent balance between full malty body (in the upper range of North American versions) and hops bitterness. Though I found it to have much more hops aroma than what revealed in the palate.

The craziness that is De Molen goes a lot of different directions. This time, the left-field attitude come at us in the form of Imperial IPA. But it's an IPA from European mindset and demeanor- balanced and flavorful, but not absurd (-that's too bad because I rather like absurd).

With a fully saturated chestnut hue, the beer takes on deep amber colors when back lit, but dark mahogany otherwise. A dense blanket of foam builds on the beer with an off white appearance. Strongly defined rings of lace trickle down the remnants from the last sip taken from the glass. It's a handsome looking beer (if it were a strong English ale, or comparable.)

Fruity and winy aromas emit from the rim with distinctive toffee-laden grapes, figs, dates, apples, campfire, and berries. A strong tropical fruit scent saturates the olfactory glands with a culminated sense of "Hawaiian Punch" fruit drink. But with its strong caramelly backdrop, the beer resists its IPA delineation.

...and the flavors follow suit. A sweeter caramel-rich, pecan flavored malt complex come together in such a way that reminds me of peanut brittle or "Cracker Jacks" candies. But as the sweetness recedes just a bit at mid palate, it's the taste of hops that gain control. Vinous red wines, cidery apple character, herbal sassafras, earthy sandalwood, peat, ginger and pepper all radiate from the hoppy middle stride and refute the clean and crisp bitterness to come. Finishing with a broad woodish bitterness and a pep of spice, the noble German hops show themselves and balance the fruity Amarillo variety that finishes the beer.

Medium bodied, but seemingly fuller per the IPA styles; this Euro-centric ale celebrates its malty underpinnings and provides the beer its extended middle palate and pushes its dry finish past the point of return. The late semi-dry finish leaves the palate less refreshed than is expected of even imperial IPAs, but the beers alcohol and mildly spicy wood finish closes the beer balanced and even keel.

I often concede that many of these American infused, Euro-brewed IPAs celebrate balance and delicate control of flavor; I'm not sure that's the best action plan. I would better appreciate the Saaz-Amarillo dialogue much better if the beer were drier and less malt accented; thus allowing that hops to tell the story without the distraction of the combative malts.

On tap @ Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fà in Rome

A - Medium yellow/orange. One finger of thick white head with good retention.

S - Fresh grapefruit, pine, some peach and a touch of honey sweetness from the malts. Very fresh and vibrant nose.

T - A big bitterness up front with grapefruit, peach and pine flavours. Some honey/caramel sweetness from the malts in the background but this is definitely a hop forward IIPA.

M - Medium body; somewhat creamy. Light carbonation.

Pours a dirty amber, touch of brown, with a bit of haze and thin head. Nose is a bready caramel with musty notes. Loads of sharp caramel on the palate with a mingle of sharp hop bitterness and slightly grassy or herbal caramel. Reminds me of malt extract from homebrewing actually. Body is medium with good carbonation. Finish is on the sweet side.

Pours hazy dark orange with a small white head dissipating quickly. Slight lacing.

Definitely on the maltier side aroma wise. Citrus and grapefruit hops do come through, but a big caramel biscuit presence stands out.

Big malts on the flavor as well. Loads of caramel and toffee. Almost more components of an American barleywine. Hops comes in at the end, but the finish is on the astringent side despite the malt.

Medium to thick bodied with carbonation levels a touch on the low side.

An ok beer. If you like big malty DIPA's, this is probably more up your alley. Still enjoyable, but could use more flavor hops and less astringency in the finish.
