Impromptu hostel review. Found a nonic pint in the cupboard. Score!
Bottle dated 13/07/2011 and drank 11/09/2012.
Pours out like a cola. The same color and the head has has big fizzy bubbles. The body is fairly black but quite a bit of amber around the bottom edge. Was expecting something a little more black from a 10.4% stout named after Rasputin.
Big dark fruit component on the nose along with dark chocolate. There is also an underlying of ash, sweetness, and bread as well.
Dark fruit leads in on the taste. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee aren't too far behind. Gets a little ashy and dark fruity in the aftertaste.
The body isn't too big on this. Maybe all the carbonation makes it seem that way. It's easy to swirl up a nice head after it has subsided but the bubbles don't tax the palette.

330ml bottle served in a snifter glass.
Bottle says Rasputin. ABV 10.4%. Apparently, a variation of Disputin.
Bottle at 25/02/2013.
A: Pours a deep black color forming a minimal beige head. Minimal retention and only few small spotty lacings left in the glass. A thin bubbled head remains for long time
S: Strong notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Licorice. quite boozy
T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate and vanilla. Notes of coffee, licorice and alcohol. Strong roast bitterness in the end
M: Heavy and creamy body. Molasses. Low carbonation. Dark chocolate and roasted malts aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. De Molen quality. Good Imperial Stout

Appearance: Totally unique for a Russian Imperial Stout. Pours with a medium bodied and colored brown. No heavy motor oil texture that has become so common for RIS. Higher carbonation then average. Thin head. No lacing.
Smell: Super sweet. Sweet bourbon, light leafy greens, figs, pipe tobacco, malt, with some hops. Again very unique for RIS. I love what it brings to the table though.
Taste: The front is such a wonderful mix of caramel, molasses, bourbon, and malt. The body is medium thickness but has no lacking aspects. The aftertaste pleasantly sits, with all the major players being felt.
Mouthfeel: Smooth. Goes down dangerously smooth
Overall: This beer kicks ass. Unique and a beer to go out of your way for.

Poured into a snifter glass. Pours black with a thick tan head that dissipates slowly. Some lacing is left behind on the side of the glass as the head retreats. The aroma is of figs, prunes, molasses, chocolate, and coffee. There's some malt roastiness, but it's not very strong in the aroma. I also get some alcohol in the smell. The dark roasted malts come through stronger in the taste than they do in the aroma. I get the alcohol, figs, prunes, chocolate, and mild coffee in the flavor. However, this is still good roasty imperial stout. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. There's some roastiness in the aftertaste. The beer is a bit thin in the body for the style, but it does drink pretty well. The alcohol brings a nice warming feel. This is an excellent beer.

L. Reddish hue, very thin looking, an marginal head at best. This is NOT a Russian imperial stout's look it isn't even close.
S. Hints of coffee, bakers chocolate, and a good bit of molasses sugar aroma. There however isn't nearly enough roasted malt here. The overall balance is very sweet and sugary to the point that I question the style claims here as well.
T. Cease & Desist is much more of a strong dark Belgian ale with a poorly done spice flavor than a stout. Once you accept this bait and switch it is a rather nice little beer. Dark fruits give this beer's sugary flavor. Raisins, figs, and perhaps some partially fermented apple. There's a bit of coffee finish and a hint of hop profile.
M. Watery for a 10% beer, very. There is still a nice bit of alcohol bite in here as well.
O. Cease & Desist seems to me a lot like a Belgian quad with a lot of Belgian yeast with a hint of coffee in the finish. Very very drinkable beer given the high abv. It is a nice change of pace but hardly something i'll seek out again given the high price tag.

This one is labeled Cease&Desist. And I wonder how it compares to Old Rasputin now that I read the label again. Holy bottle hiss, batman, this one's no Flat Abbey, that's for sure. Anyways, I digress. Bottled on April 14 2011. Big head, like massive. *Looks at watch* Cola tan colored, liquid is dark cola as well. Well, good lacing and retention. *Looks at watch again* Too much if there ever was such a thing. I want to drink my beer without getting a foam mustache, when will it subside? Okay, phew, now we can procede. Aroma is a bit lighter than expected for an RIS. Cola hints, Dark fruits, chocolate, cocoa power, toasty malts, coffee, ashy-ness, burnt molasses and brown sugar mixture. Hints at soy sauce as well but not bad. Taste is nice. A bit soy saucey though. Otherwise good. Burnt brown sugar and molasses, light cola, cocoa powder, coffee bitterness, dark fruits, maybe currants? Idk my bff Jill. The mouthfeel is surprisingly good. Even with the seemingly insane carbonation level, the body is medium-full, the consistency is filmy viscous as an RIS should be, the carbonation in the mouth is only medium-high, and the finish is moderate though cola-y and soy saucey.
Overall, decent beer. Is it better than Old Rasputin? Well I haven't had them side by side but at this point I'd probably take Old Rasputin. Am I any less inclined to support North Coast with my "hard earned beer money" as the label here states because of their thinking that I was "to [no, this wasn't my typo but actually one on the bottle] dumb to tell the two products apart..."? In a word, no. Thank you De Molen for that good laugh. It's a little hard to take your cause seriously in light of that. The point here is that you should let your beer speak for yourself, instead of doing things like putting attack campaigns on your labels, and sadly, your beer is only really mumbling in the background of my brain.
