Had one glass of the 750 ml bottle, drainpoured the rest. Experiment gone wrong.

8oz glass at Beer Revolution - not sure if this is barrel aged, but it is supposed to be sour, so here I go.
This beer appears a pretty solid fresh 'black' oil colour, with one fat finger of puffy, foamy, and certainly creamy beige head, which leaves a wash of drooping cloud lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.
It smells of tart red wine must, grainy caramel malt, cocoa powder, vanilla and musty wood staves from the purported barrel, a sort of un-aged whiskey booziness, and understated leafy, weedy, and piney hops. The taste is sharp, tannic red wine, gritty caramel and toffee malt, subdued butterscotch, further sour dark orchard fruit, weirdly laid-back vanilla-accented woody notes, faint earthy hops, and a crazily restrained alcohol warming.
The bubbles are more or less subsumed by the overall headiness of this offering, the body a solid medium weight, even with the barrel intransigence. It finishes off-dry, the sourness of the now obvious red wine wood kind of dominating the otherwise big stout character.
Yeah, while there are a few apparent wrongs going on here, they're hardly critical - there's nothing overtly egregious, in my mind, at least, about mixed red fruit forward wine and chocolaty stouts intermingling. Worthy of giving a shot, if only for the novelty.

Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.
From a 75cl bottle into a snifter
Bottled 20 September 2013
EBC: 250
EBC: 80
BA imperial stout with multi-culti yeast stuff going on.
APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour looks pretty thick and yields a one finger, medium looking, tan head with decent retention. Head fades to a film and ring. Clear black body with no real carbonation. A ring remains but doesn't leave anything in the form of lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Some sour cherry notes start it off with a dose of vinegar, acid and some roasted grains. Oak and alcohol with notes of light chocolate with some zesty lemon.
TASTE: Sour and tart lemon, with some roasted notes and chocolate up front as well. Cherries and more acidic sourness into a big finish of vinegar, tart cherries and lemon zest over a bed of roasted grain. A little too much acidity for me. A bit too rough.
PALATE: Medium body and lower levels of carbonation. A touch watery on the palate perhaps, goes down fine and finishes a touch dry.
OVERALL: A bit too acidic for my palate. The idea is interesting, but I'm still not convinced a stout needs to be soured, and I don't think this was the best base stout anyways. Not something I'd bother seeking out again.
