S: Poured from the tap at Arnold's, the 1861 Porter came filled to the brim of a pint glass.

A: Dark redish brown to black, with wisps of creamy, tan head.

S: Sweet with hints of dark roasted malt.

T: Lactose is prominent, followed by undertones of tobacco and raisins, and ending with dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee.

M: More carbonation and less body than most of this style, and typical of Moerlein's other brews.

O: The prominence of lactose makes me think of breakfast. Personally, I appreciate the big flavor and slim body which, after drinking a few, doesn't leave me feeling like a just ate a four course meal. Delicious, will order again.

On tap at Arnold's-where else! Very, very dark brown ale. Smoky chocolate and coffee aromas accompanied by dry tobacco. Silky coffee and crisp, fruity flavors. Aftertaste of malted chocolate and caramel. Feels very light and crisp for a porter. Definitely something I'll want to drink again and again.

Had on-tap at Arnold's in downtown Cincy.

Pours a dark brown-black with small whisp of white foam and retaining lace.

Scent mostly of sweet chocolate and hint of charcoal malt.

Flavor consists of a sweet milk chocolate, hint of hazelnut, and roasted malt...all kind of washed-out and not nearly as bold as I would expect in a quality porter.

Body is the main drawback of the beer; very watery for the style.

Perhaps the beer was a bit past its prime, but having been disappointed by other styles brewed by Moerlein, it seems they are afraid to go all-out and create one heavy-duty beer for those who can handle it.

Arnold's Bathtub Brew as they call it is very dark brown, almost black with a thin lace and a ring around the glass. The smell is faint coffee and chocolate. The taste is pretty similar with plenty of dark malt flavor. The mouth feel is disappointingly thin with an abrupt finish. It is very easy to drink though and not a bad effort from Moerlein.

A. Black with thin tan head.

S. Slight creamy vanilla sweetness with roasted coffee aroma.

T. Roasted dark malt lends coffee and chocolate notes with some caramel sweetness.

M. Creamy with a good level of carbonation. A bit too thin.

D. Solid. A great beer with an Arnold's burger. One of the better standard porters I've had.

Had it a second time at The Comet in Northside and enjoyed it again.
