A pretty solid black coffee colored brew with a very modest off-white circle of thin bubblage on top and decent traces of lace. The aroma suggests a woodsy skunk malt with a roasted peat edge. Not bad. The taste brings on a thin, harsh charcoal with bitter cider mash malt. Some grassy ash tray ideas here. Not bad but the body is closer to light with a very thin, aqueous feel and very little carbonation. Good but not great.

Friend of an Irishman is no ones friend! It poured out a deep and headless brown. The aroma was slightly acrid, like rotting humus. The taste was of burnt coffee and acidified chocolate. Also, a touch too sweet for a dry stout. It actualy tastes somehow weak bodied,as if you were to take a very old batch of Murphy's or Guinness and add 10% more water! Slightly bitey aftertaste.

Friend of an Irishman stout pours a black color, with not much head, lots of carbonation; looks like a coke. There is a smooth smell, with hints of coffee. A smooth taste, creamy, strong coffee flavors, on a rather smokey malty backbone. Very nice full flavor, stays on the tongue. Overall a very solid dry stout, enjoyable and different from the market favor Guinness.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance –Poured a dark brown color with a light off whit head. The head faded quite fast leaving only a little lacing.

Smell – The smell was mainly off coffee and some roasted malt. There is an ever so light vanilla aroma mixed in as well giving it a somewhat vanilla flavored coffee smell.

Taste – A roasted bready and coffee flavor meet the tongue. They are rather dry up front with a little bit of vanilla sweetness mixed into the beginning of the flavor. As the taste advances any sweetness that was present seems to dissipate leaving a much drier brew. At the end the coffee flavors then really starts to take hold and leave a dry, somewhat bitter coffee flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel is a little bit on the creamier side with a medium level of carbonation. For the lightness of the brew, the body is heavier then would have been expected and quite nice;giving the roasty flavors a chance to sit on the tongue.

Overall –It was a average dry Irish stout and nothing I would go out of my way for. It would likely do better in a nitrogen driven fashion.

I'm kind of surprised to see this scored "average" when I find it to be quite a bit above average in my book.

I haven't had a Christian Moerlein beer in a number of years. But I couldn't resist picking up a six pack of the Irish Dry Stout a week before St. Patrick's Day. Heck, it was showcased in a display of "irish" beers at Roof Brothers in Paducah, KY and I was in the "irish" mood.

A -- Aggressively poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass. Great frothy head that quickly dissipates to a sheen above a dark-as-night body of beer.

S -- The smell gets better as it warms to room temperature. But it's still quite an aromatic brew fresh out of the bottle. Smells like a good stout should, with some dark roasted malts, maybe some coffee mixed in.

T -- Tastes very nutty, like a coffee stout watered down but with all the bitterness of a coffee stout. I find this brew from Christian Moerlein to be very refreshing, paired with a pot pie fresh from the oven.

M -- No carbonation whatsoever. But not a flat beer. Very dry. Very much like how an irish dry stout should feel in the mouth.

O -- I've seen variety packs from Christian Moerlein at Party Town in Florence, KY and never picked one up. But I might have to, now that I've seen the quality has returned to Christian Moerlein brews. Cheers !!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a dark brown, small tan head, settles into the faintest of rings, no lacing, and no retention. This is a stout? Could have fooled me, even if swirled the head appears for a few seconds and disappears as quick as it came. Not off to a good start.

S: Better, but odd: Roast and coffee are in there, but the main note I get is fresh pizza dough, complete with tomato sauce and herbs. Makes my mind say what the f... As it warms a little, the roast starts coming out more, and the dough goes away a little.

T: MUCH better. Woody and earthy, roast coffee, slight sweetness, a little chocolate hidden in the back. Dry finish.

M: Thin for a stout, creamy though, and no overly carbonated.

D: Good. No alcohol detected, nice roast flavor, and the dry finish makes you want more.

This one started off bad, and ended not so bad. I was expecting this one to be like OTR, which I hated, and this one surprised me a little. Better than expected.

Appearance - Very dark, brownish/black appearance with minimal orange/ruby highlights around the bottom. Fairly thick tan head that had huge bubbles in it. Head retention and lacing was not as strong as i thought it might be. Head settled to a small ring.

Smell - Picked up an earthy, coffee aroma at first. Not a robust type of coffee, but mild and pleasant. A bit of a toasty or burnt chocolate. Some smokey notes also. Hints of charcoal. Getting an aroma of burnt toast. Smells pretty good.

Taste - The taste provided a mild coffee and chocolate flavor. Again, I picked up hints of a toasty or burnt bread. Not bad at all and somewhat pleasing. Minute amounts of dark fruit are hidden in the background. Solid.

Mouthfeel - Medium mouthfeel. Dry and pretty smooth. Leaves enough on the palate for a second sip. A lot of coffee flavoring is left behind.

Drinkability - This, overall, is a solid Stout. Worth a try if available and if you are a Stout fan. Solid all around. I could set a few back relatively easy. I would drink it again if it was offered.

This did not hit the mark for an Irish dry - more English than Irish. Color was dark black, but a bit thin as light penetrated around the edges. No creamyness to the mouthfeel or the dryness associated with the style. A tad watery, with distinct coffee notes and an undercurrent of slight oxidation.
