On tap at The Bulldog, Jackson, MS
OK, I've been trying to get a taste of this hard to find beer for about eight months now; heard so many good things about it. Let's see if it's really the holy grail of brewskis.
A: nice translucent amber with a half finger head that makes a beeline to the powder room. Not much lacing but it does leave a tan circle around the glass.
S: Well...I know there's something in there somewhere. Perhaps some light malts. A healthy dose of ginger. Not much else, though.
T: Ginger forward. Then a bit of malts as the sips continue. It's getting a bit better. Nutty, molasses, bourbon, some oak barrel. Stately, but not suave.
M: light to medium with medium carbonation. A dry finish. Medium bodied.
O: Just not real impressed with this overpriced ($8) limited edition draft. I was really hoping for something more robust, but instead got a cad who, frankly my dear, just didn't give a damn. If you're considering a Southern Gentleman, spend your money on the sophisticated taste of Southern Pecan. Now that's a real gentleman.

Thanks to Mike for sharing this rarity. Served in a Night of the Living Ales taster glass. A barrel-aged sub-5% beer eh?
A - Finger of tan foam settles to wisps, partial collar, and no lacing. Transparent amber-orange body with a few slow-moving bubbles present.
S - Lots of spicy oak, earthy bourbon, a hint of dill, and perhaps a hint of fruity brown ale in the background. But yeah, loads of oak here as you'd expect.
T - Flavor is also super-heavy on oak and bourbon, with earthiness and spicy flavors aplenty. Really don't get much of the base beer at all; perhaps just the faintest hint of sweet malt late on the palate. Finishes with more oak and slightly sour bourbon.
M - Surprising hefty for sub-5%. It's medium-light but I expected it to be even thinner after the barrel-aging. A tad watery, with lower carbonation. Oaky texture, but with a mildly chewy finish. Some alcohol warmth - curious how much residual bourbon was in these barrels.
D - Odd choice for barrel-aging, although I believe when this was first made Mississippi was hampered by a 6% ABV cap. Kudos for pushing the envelope in a restrictive beer culture, but unfortunately this is neither a good idea nor a well-executed one. If you like watered down bourbon, this might be a hit? I finished my 6oz so it's not undrinkable, but I also had minimal inclination to drink any more. I didn't like the base beer much and I feel largely the same here.

Served from growler into an oversized wine glass. Poured a deep red-orange with a hint of brown with a minimal off-white head that subsided to almost none quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, wood, fruit, apple, nutty, and very subtle sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, nutty, wood, earth, fruit, apple, and sweet alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. Nothing on this one really stood out to me as making it great which was rather unfortunate. I have had the base brew in the past and wasn’t overly impressed, so I was hoping this treatment would help it out. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear that it did for my palate. Bummer. Glad I got the opportunity to try this one, but I doubt I will do so again in the future unless there is a new barrel treatment to try.

Served on tap at Taco Mac Decatur August 10, 2012. Reviewed from notes.
(Appearance) Deep amber, pale ruby brown. Light surface cover. 3.5
(Smell) Caramel malt, heavy bananas, bread. Interesting combination of flavors, points for originality but not sure if it works. 3.5
(Taste) Banana and bubblegum yeasty bread character, husky caramel. enjoyable. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Creamy slick and smooth. Medium body, medium alcohol presence. Texture similar to the pecan brown. 3.5
(Overall) Decent across the board. Probably not worth the price ($8.25 for a 11 oz pour), lots of similarities to southern pecan, with a slightly yeastier profile and a pleasing wood aged flavor. 3.5

I had this one on-tap at The Londoner in Baton Rouge... it's a bourbon-barrel aged version of the Southern Pecan.
It was a deep amber color, not hazy, not much head on the bar pour into a pint glass.
The aroma was very spicy and boozy... the bourbon aging really came through in this style.
The taste was even more bourbon heavy, easily one of the most bourbon-dominant examples of aging I've tried. The nutty pecan flavors are there as well but the bourbon vanilla and spice notes dominate the palate.
The mouthfeel is interesting because it tastes like a stronger beer than it actually is. The alcohol notes from the bourbon really fool you, but it's not a strong beer.
Overall, I'm glad I got the chance to try this, hopefully it's more than a one-time release.
