Style | ABV
American Pale Wheat Ale |  4.68% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (92), on-tap (15), cask (2), growler (1)

Notes:
Indian Summer is a light profile American-style wheat ale spiced with Orange Peel and Coriander. Our recipe uses a mix of wheat and pale barley. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the spices to shine through. Clean fermenting yeast produce a very dry, crisp base to further accentuate the spices. The aroma has a distinct citrus note without being overly fruity.

12 ounce bottle -> World Market Wheat Beer Glass

This beer pours up a hazy pale gold with a small head, no retention, and no lacing. Smell is citrus, not bad, and maybe the strongest feature of this offering. Taste is very weak with notes of tangy orange and spicy coriander. A little aspiriny taste is there too. Mouthfeel is thin. This one is okay, but nowhere near being my favorite. But it beats the hell out of the Shocktop equivalent.

The second of two Lazy Magnolia beers I procured while visiting family in Meridian, Mississippi over the long holiday weekend. I still don't love it, but the Southern Pecan has grown on me. this one pours a light golden color with little head or lace but isn't sickly pale like some wheat beers. Nose is heavy on the citrus and wheat and coriander, but is pleasant enough.

This beer is, like most deep southern beers, a slightly simplified version of the style. I like the yeast and wheat melange with a touch of citrus at first but eventually it bores me. I do imagine it would be refreshing in warmer weather. The texture is okay at first but finishes dry and a touch chalky. A little sourness in the aftertaste isn't too encouraging either. Not worth driving eleven hours for.

Bottle to Pint
12oz

Thanks to EgadBananas for this one

App- Very light yellows mixed with goldenrod. Beer is slightly hazed and only had a small 1/4" white fast receding head. Little bit of bubble coming up. No cling or lace.

Smell- A bit overdone on the coriander. A bit heavy but still works in relation to the wheat and citrus notes. A bit lite and crisp on the nose with touches of grass.

Taste- The nose gives way a little to a crisp beer with very limited wow factor but goes for refeshing and brite. A good balance of citrus zest, peppery malts and coriander spice. A bit buttery creamy but hits the spot in 90 degree heat.

Mouth- Its a semi light body with a medium carbonation and what I would say is a flavor similar to a thicker flat 7up.

Drink- It was semi tasty. A little heavy handed at times, but then with 90+ degree heat was fine.

Lazy Magnolia Indian Summer has an extremely thick, off-white head, a hazy, yellow-golden appearance, with bountiful tiny streaming bubbles, and a bit of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of faint malt, sweetness, and citrus. Taste is predominately tap water with a shade of lemon juice. There really isn’t much else with this, sadly. No off-flavors, though. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Lazy Magnolia Indian Summer finishes crisp and watery. Overall, this is dull, watery, and limpid. I rate low average. Blah.

12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. There's a bottle date code, but it's nearly an inch off, smudged, and illegible. Lazy Lazy Magnolia.

Appearance: Pours a not quite clear, yellow body with a white head that dissipates in mere seconds.

Smell: The spicing of coriander and the citrus peel come through clearly over the bland, light, lackluster maltiness.

Taste: Light pale malted barley and wheat with mild sweetness adhered to it. With little character or flavor to the malts, the spicing just rides on through with a clear taste of both coriander and orange peel. Dry, moderately spicy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body, but not quite watery. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Unfortunately, it's one of those beers that's instantly forgetta--wait, what were we talking about??

Poured into a pint glass. Pours clear yellow with a tall, fizzy white head that dissipates quickly. Plenty of tiny bubbles can be seen rising from the bottom of the glass. It looks super carbonated. There are aromas of bready malt, orange, and spices. The flavor is bready from the barley and wheat malts. There are mild contributions from the orange peel and the coriander. The hop presence is there, but not strong. The body is light with plentiful carbonation. It is crisp and refreshing. It's the sort of beer that would be very drinkable after being outside on a summer day. This is a good beer, if only a bit standard.

Comes out of the tap a pretty, bubbly golden yellow; head is thin but this is apparently an artifact of the pour. Rich aroma is wheaty with firm tones of apple, lemon and banana. Satisfying flavor has a wheaty core and fruity notes plus a hint of butterscotch and a touch of hops. Lively texture has average body but plenty of tingle and sass. A truly satisfying summer brew, certain to cool you off on a hot day. (And it’s hot as all-get-out in Atlanta right now - in May!)

Poured from tap into pint at Magnolia in Natchez, MS. Pours a golden crisp hay color. No head. Smells of lager style and malts. A bit of orange aroma.
Taste is just above average with a slight wheaty orange lager flavor. Nothing crazy here but crisp and refreshing. I could drink several of these with no trouble. While not amazing, this is a decent session summer brew.

The very last of a six pack that I bought sometime over the holiday season on a bargain deal. It's still $6 for a six pack in Athens. Date code on the bottle is 11 06, which translates (I hope) to June 2011. That may explain why I have been having such a hard time choking down this batch.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Lazy Magnolia pint glass at room temperature. Served at 45º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a half finger white head on top of a golden yellow base, nearly clear in appearance. Retention is poor, much of the head fades within a minute, leaving some spotty surface cover on the top of the glass. No lacing. Carbonation is moderate. This beer has some flaws in the appearance, mostly due to the head quality which fades rapidly, doesn't make a good first impression. 2

(Smell) The good news is that this beer is potent, but the bad news is that potency isn't really what I want with the way time has handled this beer. Spice and hops have completely faded from the nose by this point, leaving what can only be described as a sour wheat malt impression. Very musty wheat forms the base of the aroma, with some faded orange peel in the back. Beyond that, there's not much else to describe. While the smell is not blatantly offensive, it is far from pleasant. I hope fresher dates produce a much more appealing aroma than the one I have in my glass today. 2

(Taste) More thin musty wheat, funky yeast and a touch of old orange. It's not pleasant and there's little to commend. Fortunately the complexity is limited to making the flavor closer to water than wheat, so the flavor is light and therefore bearable in small sips. Hop flavor is limited, but there is a tiny hint of grassy flavors on the end. Coriander seed is largely a shadow of what I expected to find in this beer but can the characteristic peppery spiciness still be found in subtle doses on the tongue and in the finish. Believe it or not, this beer is still quite drinkable, but "pleasant" is a word I would use cautiously. Time doesn't treat Pale Wheat Ales well, and this is certainly no exception to the rule. 2

(Mouthfeel) There's little that time could do to impact the texture and the carbonation in this beer, which is still spritely enough to get by. It's actually not a bad level for a Pale Wheat, smooth with a touch of air on the tongue. The carbonation could become somewhat more energized and do some good for the beer overall, but at its current state it passes. Body is a light. Alcohol is a light as well. One of the best parts of this beer without a doubt would be the mouthfeel. 3.5

(Overall) I feel so bad for coming down hard on this beer, but we sometimes learn the hard way what constitutes a good deal versus a bad one regardless of the price. I'll go on record stating that it is very important to check the date of this specific beer. Age has taken any pleasant wheat and orange flavors and added some must and funk to the whole mix. For $1 a beer, this may be the casual drinker's run-of-the-mill beverage. I, however will have a hard time getting this again, thinking of the potential that a fresh batch MAY taste just as similar. In that case, buyer beware. I could point out quite a few better Pale wheats, so just check my ratings. If there is one thing to take away from the review, it's to check the date on every bottle you can find. 2.5

12 oz. bottle tried 31 Oct 2011. Served in the ~0.4 L (512) Third Anniversary snifter.

Smallish white head. Well carbonated. Color of clear bright cider. Aroma is spicy, coriander, white pepper and clove. Starts a little mineraly with a bit of clove. Medium to light body, light ethanol. Slight touch of orange peel. Peppery in finish, sweetness lingers.

Aroma is nice, otherwise pretty average.

A-Pours a crystal clear gold with a small white head that fades quickly leaving no lacing.
S-Smells faint and bland with some mild fruity esthers and some mild spices as well but nothing well defined.
T-Much like the aroma, kinda bland on all levels. I suppose it would be good during a hot summer day...
M-This is the best part of the beer. Very crisp and refreshing with a medium/mild body. Slightly dry in the finish. Very nice mouthfeel.
O-Imo, it's descent and very drinkable, but not impressive in the least. Glad my friend picked some up for me to try. Thanks Julie!

This beer has a medium amber color and is very transparent. The head is small and disappears quickly. The beer smells bready and sweet with a hint of citrus. The taste is malty, sweet, with very subtle hops and spice at the end. It's light bodied and refreshing. Overall, the beer is light, sweet, and very easy to drink.

Poured into a Coco Cola Tumbler

Appearance-Slightly darker then other Wheat Ale's i've had. It's a pretty dark orange with less then a finger off off white head. Dissipates almost immediately.

Smell-Sweet malts, orange and spice. No Wheat.

Taste-Sweet malts all the way. Really no orange or any citrus or wheat in the taste. If so it's very subtle. Finish has some apple. Carbonation and sweetness kind of overshadows most the beer though.

Mouthfeel-Light bodied, High carbonation. Pretty refreshing.

Overall-I think this may be it. I do NOT like Wheat Beers. I don't think I've had a good experience yet. When drinking summer beers I'm better off with Pale Ales, Wits and Hefes.

Acquired via trade from barefootbrewer, so a big “Thank you” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, citrus, light caramelized malts and some hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of citrus, bananas and some caramel. Then some mildly bready flavors come in from wheat and a thin malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, there are better beers in the style but this is a decent lighter beer to drink for a while.

This beer was served chilled in a pint glass.

Appearance: The body of the beer is clear yellow coloration. The white head quickly went away and no lacing noted.

Smell: A brief wiff of coriander peppers up a sweet bready malt aroma.

Taste: The flavor of the beer is sweetend malt. A bit of pepper and cloves help to spice this beer up. The flavors are very clean.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is light. The carbonation is moderate and works well with the beer.

Overall: This is a throw back lawn mower beer. This would also work well for macro loving friends.

Appearance: Hazy golden glass doesn't hold much of a head, just a thin coat that doesn't lace. The thin head dropped off about half way through leaving a murky yellow glass.

Smell: Some coriander in a sweet wheat base. A bit of bread yeast, no hops noted.

Taste: A pretty generic profile, strikes me much like a macro lager, which is to say clean, with some wheat bread characters.

Mouthfeel: Rough wheat texture, almost gritty with high carbonation level that goes a bit fizzy in the mouth. A bit oily and stays on the palate a bit.

Overall: A clean, if somewhat bland American Wheat. Could use some more spices and more protein to help hold some head.

This claims to be a summer wheat, so I was expecting a Weizen style, and I expected some added spice as well. The best thing I can say about this is that it is inoffensive. Its sweetness is balanced by a slightly metallic zing. The orange flavor doesn't show as an orange-peel or essence--maybe it is folded into the sweetness. It has almost no wheat characteristics; it really looks like a lager in the glass, only faintly rusty; no conventional "native" wheat spiciness or fruitiness, and the added spice is nondescript. This beer reminds me of Shiner Bock--it shares that beer's somewhat papery overtone. It suggests a beer like Shiner also in that it comes from a nominally quirky brewery that is obviously trying not to startle people used to mainstream beers. These guys need to take the governor off their system and really make a Weizen-style with corriander and orange. It sounds good.

12 oz. bottle served in pint glass. About 4 mo. past date on bottle.

A - hazy light golden with 1 finger of thick white head; exceptional retention
S - rather unpleasant sour smell
T - Pils malt with mix(?) of spices, including coriander; some citrus flavor. Medium/light flavor is much better than aroma indicates, but too sour and with unfortunate flavor mixture. Decent finish.

No date on this one.

A: Pours a light golden honey ale with excellent clarity. Less than single finger loose soap sud head dissipates nearly immediately and Faint sheen of the same is leftover. No lacing.

S: Cardboard, rose, clove, carapils nose. Fairly simple, not impressive, but not bad either.

T: Quite sweet. Almost a sweet tea flavor to this. Orange pekoe, stevia, honey, and hints of clove in the far reaches.

M: Medium light body with medium carbonation. Decent feel. No resonance. Good for the style I would argue.

O: Average kinda beer. Can see why I would drink this without end on a hot and humid southern day. Great for sessioning, but loses points for originality - fairly simple.

Pours pale yellow with a ring of white foam. Grass and grain nose. Honey and granola malts with muddled herbs, then some lemony noble hops. Wheaty roundness. Clingy, medium light and not especially crisp.

Don't know why they're adding the coriander and orange peel if it's with such a light hand. Kinda like an upmarket Blue Moon, which is not a compliment. Too stick to be the summer drinker they want it to be.

Aroma is more citric than anything...coriander is present in the background. Smells a bit tart.

But the taste, that's something else entirely. There's a good, sweet orange fruitiness to the body of this beer....with some coriander in the background. The label does specifically call out both orange peel and coriander in the making of this, and I'd say they weren't kidding. Both are definitely there and they run the show. The aftertaste shows a pretty good dose of grainy wheat in it too.

This would be one of the most drinkable beers I could think of on a hot day. Even though it isn't a hot day and I'm inside, I still enjoy this immensely. Probably one of the best sessionable beers around.

12oz bottle courtesy of injuredreserve into a Duvel tulip.

A: Appropriately hazy pale orange body with a finger of quickly-dissipating white foam that leaves only the lightest spots of lace. Not especially appealing, but fairly standard for the style.

S: The spices overwhelm everything else here, with coriander and almost-sour orange peel leading the way. Inoffensive, but no better than average.

T: The tart orange peel jumps out first, followed by sharp coriander and finally some grainy malt sweetness. No really distinctive wheat characteristics - it tastes almost like someone spiked a generic lager with witbier spices. The result isn't really bad, but it's rather incoherent and disappointing.

M: Light, almost watery body with moderate, spiky carbonation. Underwhelming.

D: Despite being unimpressed by this beer in general, I could definitely see how its emphasis on the tart citrus flavors (and omission of substantial wheat/malt/hops aspects) could add to its refreshment potential. I'm sure I'd be enjoying it far more if I were in Mississippi in October.

Notes: While not a particularly good beer, I could definitely imagine it being a popular (and justifiably so) thirst quencher in hot weather. Better than Blue Moon, but quite possibly less flavorful. While glad to have the chance to try it, I won't be seeking it out in the future.

Cheers!
