English Brown Ale |  4.39% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (388), on-tap (54), growler (7)

Notes:
Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

Received this as an extra in a trade. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a nice deep dark crystal clear brown with a one finger head that fades to leave a thick creamy blanket. Considering the ABV, quite solid.

S - Ah, the aroma, not quite solid. No, average at best. Lots of malt sweetness, super super faint nuttiness, very slight metallic aroma.

T - Not getting any pecan notes, super malty, light caramel, brown sugar. Light tinny after taste.

M - Mouthfeel is thin and watery.

O - Overall, yah, get no pecans here, and that metallic tinge to it. Not a fan.

A: Deep copper/light brown in color with a head that dissipates rapidly.

S: Malty sweetness in the nose.

T: Very malty as is characteristic of this style. The "pecan" of the name is absent.

M: Relatively low carbonation. A sweet lingering flavor.

Notes: In general, I am turned off by the extras added to beers that are touted by their brewers, especially when the actual flavors suggested are completely absent or nearly so. Brewing is a craft. Nutty flavors are crafted in the brewing process, not added by throwing in a few handfuls of nuts (or bacon). Drop the shtick and brew the flavor!
On another note, this beer is not bad, but is not session-able for me because of its high malty sweetness.
Lastly, like some beers I have tasted before, there is a distinct metallic taste to this beer another mark against it.

P: Crystal clear brown copper body with a creamy taupe head that fizzles to a nice creamy layer.

S: Aroma is similar to candied roasted pecans with earthy aromatic hops to balance out the sweetness. Very balanced and clean nose.

T/M: Roasted pecans, bitter toffee apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, aromatic hops with syrup and coffee lurking in the background. Faint smoke in the mix. Medium body with crisp carbonation.

O: A fantastically balanced brown ale. There is nothing overpowering or understated it all works together. I've been waiting to try a Lazy Magnolia offering and I'm impressed. Cheers!

Good beer. Not excellent, but good.

Pros: Yummy smell of caramel and toast with a beautiful copper reddish-brown color and good flavor - noting caramel and stone fruit (apricot maybe?). Some nuttiness as advertised, but I'll discuss that further in the cons. Okay carbonation.

Cons: Almost no head whatsoever. The 1/4" head I had fizzled out in less time than it took to pour the beer into a glass. While it did have some nuttiness as I mentioned, I only tasted pecan until after it had warmed up in the glass. Even then, it was more of an after-taste at best. Definitely not as strong as I would expect from a beer that pushes the pecan flavor so strongly as a selling point.

Overall: It was good and paired well with salty tortilla chips. It's a good casual snack beer, but not much else.

On tap ar Closed for Business.

Appearance - Clear deep copper. No head. Just a few wisps and a thin collar.

Smell - Also not much of an aroma. Slight nuttiness. Otherwise I think I smell the dish soap used to clean the glass more than the beer.

Taste - Vast improvement. Much more nutty with a hint of caramel. Some vanilla. Clean finish.

Mouthfeel - Light body. Minimal bitterness. Like none, really.

Overall - Nutty flavors are the highlight. So much that it's the only flavor, really.
