The beer is clouded orange amber, has a high thick off-white head leaving good lacing but less curtains.

The smell is sweet and fruity, brown sugar, toffee, grape-fruit and black currant leaves. Pine needles and resin. Lots of action for the nose,

The taste starts slightly sweet, brown bread, a sorbet of grapes, black currant and oranges, then grape-fruit peels and crushed seeds.

A light carbonation, a sticky but smooth texture, a huge body and a long dry finish.

Lots of action in this, loads of fruits, and a solid bitterness, to be enjoyed in small portions. The bottle was just as good as, or even better than the cask. Marked with 8.5% ABV btw.

Appearance A hazy peach ale headed by a short buttermilk-white top. Spotty dots and lacing clinging onto the glass for dear life. Retention of the head is about two minutes leaving a creamy carpet of bubbles.

Smell Brown sugary sweet malts with mostly apricots and some passion fruit. Densely hopped giving a very resinous aroma. Finally some alcohol stinging my nostrils a tad.

Taste Initially sweet then a raging hoppiness/bitterness that turns dry in the finish. I detect pine needles and red grape fruit at first mouth, then some additional citric fruits that have a rounder flavor, like nectarines.

Mouthfeel Although not extremely sweet the sugars tend to make my lips sticky. The alcohol is well hidden and just enough to warm me up a bit. This is a very dry and bitter brew with an aftertaste that is even more bitter although not overwhelmingly so. The liquid is a smooth liquid one and the carbonation is soft.

In conclusion The scarce carbonation and lack of sugary sweets make it difficult for the beer to carry the bundle of flavors all the way through which I hoped it would. Putting these matters aside, it still is, if not the best, one of the best double IPAs to yet come out of Sweden. It has an awesome aroma that’s for sure. I got to give to Oppigårds though, although they don’t produced the most extreme of experimental beers (which I’m sure is not in their business plan anyways…) they always deliver a rock solid and trust worthy version of the style at hand for the benefit of the wider market. This is microbrewery made Easy but not Simple.

Hazy orange color with a compact white head which slowly fades away and leaves some lacing on the glass. Smell of exotic fruits like mango, pineapple, starfruit, peach, passion fruit, tangerine, and grapefruit. Behind the hops there’s some bready malt with a touch of caramel. Taste of mango, pineapple and passion fruit which leads to strong grapefruity bitterness which is lightly balanced buy the cookie-like malt and caramel. Pine needles and resin can also be found. Fullbodied with soft to average carbonation. Damn nice!

A - Hazy orange colored beer with a bit of a white head that left some random lace and spots on the sides.

S - Pretty sweet with a sugar backbone. Some tropical fruit, little bit of pine. Some sweeter peach or apricot aromas.

T - Citrus and tropical fruit notes with just a touch of pine. Backbone is some sugar and malts.

M - Medium bodied moderate carbonaion.

O - Solid beer, alcohol is well hidden and it's easy to drink. For a Euro DIPA this is pretty good.

Bottle thanks to Sean. Best before January 2012. Served in a Heady Topper glass.

A - A finger of white foam settles to some wispy haze and spotty lacework. Hazy peach color.

S - Icing sugar malt backbone, with tropical fruit hop aroma and some peach flavors as well. Slightly buttery.

T - Citrus hops, tropical fruits, sugary malt backbone, and a surprisingly dry and clean finish.

M - Smooth medium body, well-hidden booze, moderate-to-low carbonation, and a dry resinous finish.

D - This is a solid European DIPA. It's not overly hoppy, although I have no idea when it was bottled. Still, decent stuff nonetheless.

Oppigårds Drakens DIPA, ABV: 8.5%.
330 ml bottle, 22.90 SEK at Systembolaget.

From notes:

A: A hazy, orange-coloured liquid, that looks a little bit like honey, with a big, off-white crown that leaves some remains in the glass.

S: A sweet tropical fruit-salad spiced with pine-needles for the nose - I get loads of apricots, tangerines, lemons and grapefruit. I just want to smell and smell and smell.

T: The flavours are dominated by fruity hops, but the bitterness kind of sneaks up on you. Here is the fruit-salad from the nose accompanied with pineapple, butter, hints of rye bread and some grassy notes.

M: A rich, large body to match the large bitterness. The alcohol becomes more and more noticeable, but despite the ABV and hoppiness this isn't a too sharp or aggressive beer.

O: Well, wow! One of the best beers I've had. This was my first DIPA and I'm just overwhelmed by the aroma, the flavours, and that it wasn't too bitter for my liking.

The colour is amber with a hint of orange (18 EBC). The two finger head is compact and off-white. It sinks slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is dense and hoppy; citric and exotic fruits like grape fruit, white grapes, oranges, apricots/peaches, cumquat, and green bananas. Some chemical hints of rubber and glue. Of course, there are bitter notes, although not that heavy.

The taste is very bitter and hoppy, but also sweet with a full body. Fruity notes of grapefruit, unripe strawberries, apricots and carambola. Plus some apricot/orange marmalade and hints of rubber and metal. The aftertaste is dry with some fruits like peach, apricots and carambola. Bitter-sour notes; some fresh herbs and flowers (dandelion?) and a touch of corn syrup. Dry bitterness in the finish.

The carbonation is strong with mid-sized smooth bubbles. The liquid is mid-smooth.

A very elegant and balanced DIPA with lots of dry fruity flavours.
