Poured in to a traditional English beer mug, Oppigards Well Hopped Lager has a hazy golden straw color, with a finger of white heading. A big hoppy nose greets you right away, followed by fresh grains. As expected, hops take center stage here, though are not abrasive at all. They say that this is a farmhouse beer, and I do get a certain something rustic about this beer. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. I could drink this damn beer all day long. Overall this more than satisfied my Lager craving today. I would love to put this one up against Prima Pils from Victory to see which is hoppier. While it may be a bit on the pricey side, this is a stellar beer.

Just arrived today, and I figured it was worth a try. This beer pours a hazy orange hue with a small white head that disappears quickly to a thin surface film. Looks more like a kellerbier than a pilsener. The smell consists of cereal grains and some toffee, along with medicinal hop character. Taste is much like the smell, although the medicinal character isn't as present as it is on the nose. Caramel, biscuit, and floral hops make up the flavor profile. Medium in body with a soft mouthfeel. For some reason, Scandinavian brews always seem to have a medicinal, astringent character when it comes to hoppier styles. Drinkable by all means, but different. A solid effort, but there are others in the same style that I would pick before this one. Decent, however.

$9 for an almost big boy glass at Deep Ellum, Alston MA

Deep gold with a frothy white head. Good retention and lace, especially for a lager.

Aroma is good but not as strong as I'd like. Swampy, musky hops predominantly. I can never smell beers well in Deep Elllum which is odd because it's so dark I can't see and the music is so loud I can't hear - you'd think my sense of smell would be heightened. It's not.

Taste is more along the lines of what I'd expect from a hoppy lager: swampy, wet leaf and stem hops from the Saaz and mint which I'm guessing comes from some Northern Brewer. Ample sweet malt body grounds the hops. More pillowy than most German style lagers which I find to be steely.

Not just death metal and finesse hockey any more, the Swedes are gettin' pretty good at brewing.

Tap at Armsby Abbey,

Huge fluffy head 2 fingers, fades slowly with sticky lacing, clear lighter golden yellow color.

Nose interesting very light and bright spice like aromas, light Belgian malts, light grainy malts, light mild grassy hops.

Taste has Belgian golden malts, light Belgian fruity yeast, nice grainy malts, touch sweet, nice fruity hops, grassy, semi bitter. Dry finish with light grassy and touch spicy hops, malts lingering.

Mouth is med to slightly lighter bodied, decent carb.

Overall good, nice malts and hop characters, nice dry finish, good Belgian qualities, hops not overpowering.

Picked up on a whim from KJ Baarons to complete a "mix a six" not a bad selection.

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a wonderful crystal clear golden hue with a nice white one finger head atop that faded to leave light side lacing and thin wisps.

S - Very light hop aromas along with light sweet malts. There is a very nice honey note towards the end.

T - The honey really makes an appearance here. Starts off with malty sweetness followed by light floral hops all the while good honey flavours are present.

M - Pretty good mouthfeel with just the right carbonation to make this seem crisp. By the end though it loses most of it and seems thin. Good slight bitter finish though.

O - Overall a pretty good german pilsner. Really enjoying the light floral notes along with honey.

Very good beer.

Served in a tulip glass the beer was a hazy dull gold color. Less than a finger of head that fades fairly quickly but does leave a high amount of lacing.

Very pleasant aroma that is assertively hoppy with grassy notes. Light citrus perhaps a bit of lemon rind.

Really nice flavor and pretty interesting. Pilsner malts, slightly bready a touch of grass and a fairly assertive citrus hop flavor for a pilsner. I like it. A slight touch of spice here. White pepper I'd say and a moment of yeast.

Prickly carbonation, refreshing and a fairly fresh tasting beer. Especially for an import.

I really enjoyed this and would look for it again. Nice.

Review from notes. Tasted from bottle at Lush West Town. Pours pale golden with a thin bubbly head. Nose is primarily caramel malt and bread with a hint of berries and hops. Once again, caramel and bread flavors up front with hops bitterness and berry fruits kicking in on the back. The flavors seem a little out of balance. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long fruity and bitter finish.

The beer is clear golden, has a white head leaving lots of lacing.

Malty smells of sweet bread, sour lemons and grape-fruit.

The taste is upfront sweet biscuits, then lemons followed by a good grassy bitterness.

Medium carbonation, soft and sooth body but with a dry finish.

Well-balanced, and well done!

Rocky white head with lots of chunky lace. Very cloudy. Dusty blond color.

The smell reminds me of my homebrewing days when I would use an older hop pellet. It's not bad, but it doesn't smell "fresh". My first thought was skunking but I don't think that is the case here. I also smell a grainy, corn-like smell here. Again, it's not "bad" but it isn't drawing me in either.

The taste is an improvement: Nice lighter malt flavor quickly overwhelmed by a strong bittering hop. Strong biting bitterness in the swallow. Yet, it doesn't last long in the aftertaste--very odd. The body is as expected for the style. The description "well-hopped lager" is apt.

A: It poured hazy pale yellow in color with a nice sized head that leaves nice lacing patterns. A moderate amount of carbonation is visible.
S: There are distinct aromas of Saaz hops in the nose.
T: The taste has lots of flavors of hops, but is not very bitter due to the presence of the underlying malts. The overall taste is very well balanced.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and leaves a lingering taste of wet hops on the tongue.
D: It's very easy to drink and packs in a lot of flavor for a pilsner. I would definitely try this one again.

The jury is still out on this beer in my view. It pours a slighly hazy golden color with a head that at first doesn't do much, but as the beer warms, the head gets a bit more frothy and foamy. It laces ever so slightly, but that is only as the beer warms up. This beer was a bit too sharp for me right out of the bottle. The beer has the strong herbal lager aroma with a touch of lemon, and touch of bittering herbs. The nose is okay.

The taste is quite sharp and quite lemony, but there is a nice lager hidding away underneath. The lemony concentration, the grassy and herbal lagery tastes, the biting and drying hop presence makes this an interesting beer. There is a touch of wild yeast present and that farmhouse unmanufactured quality to the beer as well, which really are its endearing qualities. There is a slight bready quality in the mid section that emerges nicely at times. The lemony sharpness I'm having a hard time getting around. There is a saltene dryness in the finish, and a mouth cleansing bite in the finish that may be a bit too much. This is an interesting lager, pretty well hopped up, with some unique qualities. I'm just not sold on the whole package.

Picked up a single bottle at Whole Foods Dedham. Poured into a pilsener glass. Slightly cloudy body. Yellow color. For a pils, the head lasted a while. Lots of carbonation. Good lacing for a pils too. You can definitely smell the hops in this one. Taste was quite good. Delicious hop flavor, but not biting like an IPA. Mouthfeel was smooth but with just enough body to remain enjoyable. Easy beer to drink, as every aspect of it was well built. This is a beer that everyone can enjoy: hop lovers and those who love a well-brewed pils.

Poured from a brown 16.9 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops and malts. Tastes like it smells, mostly hops with some malts. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has good drinkability. Overall this is a pretty good beer.

I'm not a religious man, but I had a near-religious experience the first time I had this beer. Had never heard of it, but a fan of unfiltered farmhouse lagers and all things "well-hopped", I figured it was a safe bet. Really unlike anything I've ever had - the first beer in a long time to succeed in truly surprising me. Onto the business...

This lager pours a slightly hazed light orange hue, with an excellent rocky head, poking up and over the rim of the glass with a good pour, and snow white. Head lasts all the way down the glass and leaves a ton of lacing. Nose full of hops, dry and herbal, Saaz maybe? Dusty, yeasty, bakery aroma. Hints of a nice rustic earthy funk. Lots of this complexity carries through in the flavor as well, with more of a resiny hop presence. It's hopped so ridiculously for a lager, and using hops that aren't normally used in a beer like this (not like an IPA) it's got a lot of interesting flavors going on. Almost a metallic or rubbery afterthought - in a good way. Nice and doughy malt support. Smooth and slightly creamy on the palate, rather than ultra crisp like many great lagers, but retains the refreshing characteristic. Uber drinkable. Wish I could find a keg of this stuff somewhere...

A near perfect beer in my opinion. I hope this catches on and is around for a while. If you're not a fan of lagers, or don't think a beer like this could stand up to a stout or IPA, please try with an open mind... Cheers.

A- A beautiful amber color, with a frothy white head about 1 finger high. The head quickly dissipates, but it sure is a nice thing to look at.

S- Malty sweetness comes up front, with a hint of breadiness that is nicely balanced with great citrus tanginess from the european hops. For me, this is almost a perfect palance, the great caramel breadiness with a hint of lemon zest.

T- Similar to the nose, this beer has a fantastic balance of classic beer flavors. Crisp lager taste with a great aftertaste that makes this beer truly special. I just wish it wasn't so pricey

M- Wonderful carbonation, but this beer feels a bit thin for my tastes. I'm not too familiar with Swedish lagers, but the mouthfeel could have used a bit more punch.

D- I could quaff this baby all day and love every minute of it. The malt and hops balance each other perfectly. The bitterness at the end of each sip cleanses the palate wonderfully and makes you crave the next round.

Cloudy apricot body with nice lacing. Bright, hoppy aroma with notes of orange marmalade. Light toasted Pilsner malt upfront with refreshing and lightly tart hop finish. Hops are fruity with notes of citrus. Smooth body. Fun hop flavors meet uber drinkable lager. If only it were a little more affordable.
