A- hazy unfiltered orange amber look with nice thick creamy off white head. Lots of drippy lace as well.

S- toasty and grainy with some subtle fruit notes. Melon and berry and bits of cream with earthy grassy English hops.

T- malty and perfectly balanced, the bittersweet claim on the label isn't exactly true but it suits my tastes just fine. The grain is earthy and deep and nuanced with only the slightest touch of honey-like sweetness followed by a mild cocoa flavor. Finishes with a nice touch of vinous, peppery and tea like hops.

MF- full bodied, creamy will perfect 'real ale' type carbonation. Moderately dry, crisp and completely refreshing.

D- definitely glad I got a hold of this one and big thanks to Kelly for buying it for me. You know how I like it girl. If I knew where to find a constant supply this would be my go-to English pale.

Cooper amber, clear body & foamy white head on top that has some beige tinges throughout and stays quite well.

Light & sweet malts to begin with along with some earthy hops and a bit of bread. Light fruits & a bit of sugar too.

Earthy hops, some sweet malts, a little summer fruits taste, some sugar & some spice at the end.

Full bodied and quite creamy with a smooth and slightly sweet feel to it. Light carbonation & a great real ale feel to this one.

A nice real ale style beer in bottled format here, there is a subdued but rather nice smell and taste that has a few subtle fruity flavours coming through & the balance works quite well. The beer also has a great feel to it.

what a disparity between the bros and the BA score!
awesome peachy/gold pour with a nice little foam to the top. hazy and very well carbonated.
i didnt get much smell, but maybe my smeller is broken this evening. i had to rate the smell according to the rest of the delivery out of fairness, though. maybe i should spill some on the rug and see how it smells in the morning?
taste-wise, this brew is full of malt. i get the "bitter-sweet" description. its a tad bitter, and yet it comes with that little sweetness ya get with the doppelbocks.
feels full and heavy. perhaps the lighter taste is due to the lower abv but it's got a fantastic taste. overall, this is a great brew with a great flavor, even if it lacks in the abv department. and maybe that's my problem lately- is wanting to hammer those high abv brews. maybe i should change my lifestyle(?). oh wait, that's for that 'other' blog . . . . check out the brewery's website, too. thye've got a nice website, and from looking at their other brews, i'd be interested in trying some of those also. this really is/was a great beer.

Bottle bought & consumed at Crazyhorse Saloon, Hagerstown MD.

A= nice and foamy white head, orange-yellow fluid.

S= lots of nice malts, some yeast in the nose; grassy dryness, English hops florals.

T= a bit of a surprise, I didn't expect this English Pale Ale offering to have such a nice hops bitters bite. It falls nicely between being a pale ale and borders on lesser IPA's. Immediate evidence of grassy dryness, bitters, plentiful chewy malts, a very mature and finely-developed beer.

M= thick malts, hops bitters, grassy dryness.

O= I'll be looking for more of this-- a very pleasant discovery for me.

Poured into a snifter.

4.5 A: Deeply hazed orange brown color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is about average, but it leaves behind glass covering lacing.

4.5 S: This is where it's at when I dream of an English pale ale. Rich maltiness, earthy mineral vibe, and just the right amount of yeast. Touches of caramel, bready maltiness, and earthy hops. Quite a treat for the nose.

4.5 T: Taste is as solid as the nose. Lately I've had some English beers that have been mineral bombs. This, on the other hand, flirts with the mineral side of things, but doesn't let it take over. Bready and biscuity malts. Light mineral with a solid grainy earthiness. Light caramel and toffee. Grassy and earthy hop flavor. Solid, easy drinking.

5.0 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Super smooth with a wonderful creaminess.

4.5 D: It's pretty damn hard for any sort of pale out to stand out, but this one does. It's wonderful through and through.

I love this label. It’s creepy. I don’t like witches though. They scare me. They are like clowns. I haven’t met a clown I liked yet. Anyway, this is a tall bottle, serving up a pint for us to split. The front of the bottle says, “A light colored golden beer; soft, crisp, and bitter-sweet flavors.” It’s a pale though, which I can dig. I like an IPA over a pale, but when they used the word crisp I think of all the beers I have had in Europe. They are all crisp.

In the Glass: It’s cloudy, and looks like a Bud Light in the glass. The head is weak too, leaving behind little to no lace. It looks like a beer I would pound on a Saturday afternoon on the golf course or by the pool.

Nose: The nose is grassy, and has a certain orange zest sort of thing going on. It’s weird though, because at first I am picking up dirt and weeds but the sweetness takes me to the center of an orange.

Flavor: Coming off the Old Rasputin, I have a feeling this won’t even come close. And I was right. There isn’t much flavor here. It’s pretty boring, actually. It’s smooth, and would taste good in the hot summer sun. But how can a beer have this much history and have this little taste?

Mouthfeel: Not much mouthfeel here. Very little carbonation, and it goes down smooth. There is a hint of bitterness, that leads to some subtle dryness at the end. Then it’s gone. Meh. This beer is pretty bland.

Aftertaste: What aftertaste? It’s like drinking water… but with a little bit of color and some dryness toward the back of the palate. They say that beers like Bud and Bud Light taste like water. THIS beer tastes like water.

Not sure why a beer like this made the list. But it’s bad. Real bad. Stay away. You can thank me later.

Pendle Witches Brew - The bottle says: “Brewed by Moorhouse’s Brewery (Burnley) Limited using the finest Maris Otter and Crystal malts, invert sugars, torrified wheat and hopped with Fuggles, Lakeland Water and our own yeast producing a light gold beer with a citrus nose, soft, crisp, bitter-sweet with spicy aftertones.

A hazy medium-dark golden color, this brew exhibits a constant bubbling activity after a nice cascade, which helps to form a solid off-white head about a finger in height. The head displays good retention and remains in patches well down the glass.
The aroma offers up a good mix of malts and hops, bready and bit fruity with a bit of sweetness in the malts contrasted by earthy, herbal/leafy and floral hops character. The nose is a 4.0 but for a strong graininess and a sort of fading off a bit in.
The flavor is good, following suit, but a grainy character that's evident at first gets stronger and eventually detracts. Otherwise, aside from the balance of breads and fruits with leaf and earth, this is quite lemony.
The body is on the light side of medium, and the balance in the flavor is also in the semi-dry mouthfeel. It's not extremely crisp or smooth, but it's got both elements.

Bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours a light copper hue with a subdued, pitch white head which dissipates very quickly.

S: Aroma is surprisingly sweet, molasses and honey bring up the front perforated by biscuity malts and followed by some faint fruity watermelon, peach and banana.

T/M: Has a low amount of carbonation and is rampant with that honey sweetness, akin to a solid amber. Clean bittering hops support the almost overly sweet malt backbone and there’s even a slight hint of alcohol lingering in there, strange coming from a 5.1% ABV.

This doesn’t really follow suit with most pale ales and the only other similar beer I can recall is something like Baltika #9. I can’t really imagine a time where I’d be in the mood for this specifically, perhaps next Halloween. Perhaps not. Perhaps Boxing Day. Yeah. Anything’s possible on Boxing Day.

Wow!
Knocked over!

Settled with a bottle of this to round off a gentle evenings supping .

Not a big fan of EPAs but boy, this won me round.

Glorious flowery notes, hoppy, perfect carbonation, amber body thick, thick white head that clings all the way down little cheeky kick on the arse hoppy after taste.

Beer doesn't get better than this.

Poured a 2" white head. Hazy light sienna yellow color. It took a while for me to describe the smell but I'd call it a very mild hint of pickle juice sourness. The flavor is not sour, it's a more standard ale with a creamy and smooth texture. There's also a very mild crisp bitter long finish. I'd call this a cut above the average for sure.

A- Golden color, just slightly cloudy.

S- Malt with caramel undertones, could be a bit old, no freshness info.

T- Slight grain taste with a balancing lemon presence that is appealing.

M- Feel's smooth and crisp, a nice refreshing pale ale.

O- I liked this one, I have a feeling I would enjoy it a lot more on cask as it had that type of appeal to it.

Poured a chilled pint in a tall Buca di Beppo's glass

A: pale orange; decent head; lots of carbonation; great lacing
S: spritzy, sweet, honey; promises a sweet flavor
T: very light, bright flavor profile; pear, white grape overtones; a bit tinny; not very hoppy

I don't expect an English pale ale to do much for me; this one didn't disappoint, but I wasn't blown away either; not bad for this style, though

Imperial pint bottle (date stamp of L0106 - Greek to me) poured into a Tulip stout glass.

Appearance: Slightly hazy but bright gold-orange colored beer. The beer forms a nice 1/4" thick off-white head, but this dies down to a very thin film across the top with a ring at the edges. Some strands of lacing here and there but they all tended to slide back down the glass. Despite the lack of foam and lacing the color is good to admire in the glass.

Smell: Honey-like and cider smells with some floral hops thrown in, although the skunk-like hops show up a bit more as it warms up but then go away once the beer is fully at room temperature. Some hints of caramel sweetness in there as well.

Taste: Honey-like sweetness up front that moves into a quick skunk-like hop taste, then roasted malt and then a classic English bitter finish. When the beer is first poured and coldest, the honey-like sweetness is more pronounced and the bitterness is quite mild - reminds me more of some ESB at times. But as it warms up to proper temperature it takes on a different taste like I describe. Definitely a beer of British character.

Mouthfeel: Quick and fleeting carbonation on the tongue, coats the mouth and goes down easy. Some lingering sensation on the teeth. Nothing special - pretty typical for an English beer but maybe a little heavier in the carbonation than normal - not that I'm complaining.

Drinkability: This is a beer that really needs to warm up to get its real character, and that character is good for one pint - but I don't think I could have more than one. I actually think it is a bit more drinkable when cold, but more full of character when warm. Still, I think it'd be good pulled from a cask and I wouldn't mind trying it again. Went well with a meal (Mahi Mahi burgers and mixed vegtables) as well.

App: Clear golden colour, autumnal leaf colour. Very little head.

Smell: delicate, or maybe just absent

Taste: more hop than malt, well balanced, smooth, leaves a slightly bitter taste at the back of the pallets and a smoother taste on the pallets roof.

Mouthfeel: Dry, bitter

Drinkability: Very drinkable, I want another bottle.
