A: very dark, not much light passing through, small head, not creamy.

S: powerfully malt

T: Strong flavor, pretty good coffee with chocolate-like maltiness. THere is a mild bitterness to balance the rich flavor. Aftertaste is pretty good, a little lke toffee, those coffee toffees.

M: slightly astringent.

D: mellow alcohol content and lots of flavor, easy enough to drink two befre the richness does you in.

From the 355 ml.bottle. Sampled on March 19, 2013.

It pours dark brown to just about black with an off-white to tan foamy head.

On the nose it runs the gamut of dark malts, caramel malts, oatmeal, yeast and basically a lot of sweetness.

The body is medium but it had an odd astringency for a stout. I might have liked it to be deeper.

The oatmeal is also noted in the flavor along with dark malts and a smiley sweetness. Not all that bad but not at the top of my oatmeal stout list.

Appearance: Looks exactly like black coffee. Little foam, moderate lacing.

Smell: Malty, with a slight hint of chocolate.

Taste: Muted malts: chocolate, coffee, roasted oats. Just a hint of dark fruits.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, very creamy. A hint of coffee bitterness in the aftertaste.

The Verdict: Not bad. Smoother than many oatmeal stouts, but it could use a touch more raisin flavor and some hops to kick it up a notch. One of the best values for your money if you’re in a stout mood (5.99 a six pack at Trader Joe’s).
