Style | ABV
American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (100), on-tap (7), growler (1)

Notes:
Pale Ale's are turning into hoppy monsters, but our Iowa Pale Ale is more mild and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops.

A - Body is hazy and the color of amber honey. A 1/2 finger of fine white foam forms. Moderate retention. No lacing.

S - Lots of tropical fruits, citrus, caramel and a spicy pine scent. Aromas of lemongrass, green tea and fresh bread in the background.

T - Has a dry, semi-sweet grainy flavor up front reminiscent of wheat and sweet corn. A pleasant citrusy tang and accompanying hop bitterness toward the middle. Flavors of burnt sugar, juicy, citrusy hops and bitter orange peel in the finish. Only major critique is a slight metallic flavor in the aftertaste

M - Thin-to-medium body. A bit over-carbonated. Relatively clean finish aside from a bit of a sweet, hoppy residue that clings to the back of the tongue.

12 oz into nonic

A: brassy copper, moderate head with strong lacing

S: sweet grass, a bit of a fruity apple aroma

t: fairly dark flavors, brown sugar, and the apple taste underlies the whole thing. malt forward, for sure.

m: clean and smooth, no distinctive bite of carbonation which would have helped

o: it's a fine beer but would have preferred a bit more of a distinctive hop profile

Bought a 12 Fl Oz bottle of this (multiple times) from Maroney's Lounge in Des Moine, IA for $4. Poured from the Farm/Scenic labeled bottle into a 16oz Pint Glass every time. Not a single bottle had a freshness/Born On Date.

Aroma- Had a sweet and very bland aroma. Some floral/earthy hop presence but all very easy. Malt came up strong as well.

Appearance- Pours a 1 finger, frothy head with good retention. Has a very dark copper colored body and leaves an array of suds behind in no pattern.

Flavor- All very sweet and malty upfront. Has a medium amount of hops but the malt seems to dominate any flavor that comes out. Light bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Medium-High Carbonation, Smooth, and bites just a bit on the palate with what seems to be hops!?!? No way!

Overall Impression- When the bartender said they had only 1 IPA in their line-up, I wasn't ready for it do be an "Iowa Pale Ale". Lol! Bit of a mix-up but this pale ale was nice. Needed more hops all around to make it an APA and seemed more English style in every category. Nonetheless, enjoyed over 4 of these in the course of the weekend since this was the best beer at this neighborhood bar we came to 3x.

Light amber orange and super creamy tan head, leaving slight lacing rings behind.

About what you might expect from a pale ale - some hoppy citrus, but otherwise, relatively muted.

Well-balanced between a varied piney and citrus hops and sweet amber-like toasty malts - almost like a hoppy amber. Nothing especially unique here, but still a solid and drinkable beer.

There is a particular creaminess that's pretty likeable here -

After drinking so many IPAs, stouts, barleywines and other big-mouthed beers, I think we can forget how to enjoyed a decent PA, but this one serves that purpose.
