Had this beer on tap at the Wedgewood Alehouse in Seattle.

Appearance: very dark brown with a red tinge. There was practically no head, though this could just be a function of the pour.

Smell: a nice chocolate-centric aroma, but it was too weak to really appreciate.

Taste: chocolatey and roasty but not very strong. A hint of tartness frequently found in porters was present.

Mouthfeel: not awful but a little thin for a porter. Relatively little carbonation, even for the style.

Drinkability: an acceptable porter, but really not that great. I don't forsee myself ordering another one any time soon.

Dark chestnut brown with a light, toasted porter aroma. The beer centers on a casual chocolate malt flavor profile that improves with warming. It is otherwise dilute in flavor and body with no suds or standout features. Not bad, jut middle-of-the-road.

This beer is dark cocoa in color with a small head and nearly no lace.

Wonderful chocolate aroma. Nearly no hop in the smell.

I detected some band-aid flavors which detracts from chocolate tastes. There is a significant amount of hop present. The body is not particularly special but it is completely within expectations.

Although I like this porter there are some significant flaws which detract from a promising offering.

I was served a pint from the tap while having lunch at the brew pub in Anacortes, Washington. The printed description of the beer indicated that it had an ABV of 4.6% and an IBU of 35. It was described as "rich, dark ale with complex flavor form four malts and two hop varieties."

A: It poured a dark brown body that had ruby highlights and a tanish one finger head. The head did not retain well but there was a leggy and spotty lacing that clung to the side of the glass.

S: It had a dominant aroma of chocolate and roasted malts with some dark spices and fruits coming into play, especially as the beer warmed.

T: The roasted malts were early on the tongue but the chocolate flavors seemed diluted and the more dominant flavors were dark tangy fruits (plums) and coffee.

M: It was a light to medium bodied brew with a hint of bitterness in the aftertaste and very modest carbonation.

D: It was light, had good flavor and a low ABV making it a good session candidate on a rainy, cool NW spring night.

Another pint from the great little Rock Fish Grill. Poured a deep black with a rich mocha coloured thin, foamy head. There is a creamy, fresh aroma of dark chocolate, coffee and nice molasses. The taste is heavy with roasted malts and cold coffee flavours. The body is light with some heavier burnt malt notes. Not bad.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a barely translucent light black color, with 1/2 inch of dark tan head that had very good (bordering on great) retention and typical lacing.

The aroma was the expected blend of full grain, light roast and gentle hops of the style. The taste was a well expanded version of the scent, the grains a bit bigger, the roast a bit bolder, and the a bit tangier.

The body was nicely full, well-rounded, and smooth. Drinkability was excellent, my pint went down quicker than I anticipated on this rainy Super Bowl Sunday. Overall, a very nice example of the style. A must try if you see it, and worth some effort to seek out around the Puget Sound.

Pint consumed on-tap at the Porterhouse Pub in Mount Vernon, Washington for $4.

Very dark brown that took on a lighter shade when held up to the light. About two inches of tan foam that left moderate sheets of lace.

The nose was pretty much that of what one should expect for the style: Coffee-ish roastiness matched with a dark chocolaty sweetness. No hop scent jumped out, but I've always felt that a porter shouldn't be overtly hoppy, anyway.

Taste was pretty much like the nose. It started out with a bitterness akin to dark roast coffee and was then matched to a low-key dark chocolate sweetness. Very slight dryness at the swallow. Tasted like a standard porter, with no alarms and no surprises.

Mouthfeel was standard for the style, with a slight coating of the tastebuds. Body was medium.

A little above average, this is a no-frills porter, well-crafted and delivering what was expected. Next time I'm in the area, I'm going to attempt to hit the brewpub in Anacortes and try some more of their brews.

Appearance – This one is dark brown in color with ruby highlights with a good, white head.

Smell – The roasty notes here are light and very pleasant. There’s some good strong chocolate in here and a bit of refined sugars.

Taste – The light roasty notes from the nose made their way to the tongue. The chocolate steps back a bit at the taste and is replaced with some good coffee and a light hint of espresso.

Mouthfeel – This medium-bodied Porter is very bitter with a faint burnt quality. There is little sweetness to this heavy-hitter.

Drinkability – This is a good sipping American Porter and a tremendous effort from this small, PacNW brewery. We seem to have a problem making good porters in this part of the country but this offering by Anacortes is a real winner.

Comments – Thanks to skyhand for turning me on to this brewery and accompanying me on the road trip. What a terrific find!

Like Twisp and Winthrop, these guys nail the Porter and add huge flavours to a sometimes thin style. I loved the deep complexity that arose as the beer warmed up. The burnt malts and the big hops did the job of making you contemplate this fine beer. A must drink from this brewpub.

Sampled at the GCBF...and despite the fact my sample was tainted (they failed to rinse Buckerfield's IPA out of my glass), this was still very good.

Nice deep ruby appearance with a tan head. Good roasted malt smell with hints of chocolate and caramel.

Big roasted malts and hops make this a very tasty porter. Deep malty smell with a good hop bitterness. Coffee hints, dark chocolate notes.

Good mouthfeel. Very drinkable...even with a tainted glass.
