Anacortes's Amber ale isn't necessarily darker than most ambers, but its translucence is denser, affecting a darker hue. Clarity is not emphasized. It is a fruity beer that tips to the sweet with near absent suds and no particular smell. This was my fourth Anacortes beer and with the exception of the IPA, the trend - as expressed here - is middle-of-the-road.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a bright, clean, reddish amber color with just over 1/4 inch of off-white head that had very good retention and minimal-moderate lacing.

The aroma was typically malty sweet, with just enough hops in the aroma to provide some contrast. The flavor profile starts out the same, but in the middle of the tongue, the hops take control. Not in an overpowering way , just taking the lead. There's a nice crisp hop tingle on the back of the tongue.

The body was crisper and lighter than typical for the style, and had a finish that was sweeter than dry, yet drier than sweet. That'd be medium I guess. Drinkability was very good, the beer went down quickly and easily, and there's probably another in my future. Overall, a nice,and slightly atypical take on the style. Worth trying when you see it.

This is one od the maltiest ambers in the area which is nice since a lot of the style tastes too much like a pale ale. The malt notes really came off on the nose and the finish. Well brewed and a good take on the style. One of their best regular beers.

As a rule, I find that amber ales are a catch-all for every neutral American ale. That said, this beer I found to be special.

This pours clear with a solid amber color. It offers a moderate head (bar tap pour) but with a lace that lasts.

This is a balanced beer in the aroma department. There's enough hop, as well as malt, to keep it interesting.

The balance of this brew is present in the taste as well. The malt is the first taste but it slowly transforms to a strong hop buzz. In this sample, the beer was served warm (say 45 to 50 degrees); I would say that this was perfect for the flavors to come through. The aftertaste is all hop. The body is decent and predictable.

I would place this close to a perfect Bitter from England.
