Smell is a good balance of coffee and dark chocolate. Not a huge aroma, this is pretty tame, but really nice. Not a lot of roast, but a little bitterness from coffee and cocoa.

Taste follows, really nice balance between the coffee and chocolate, coffee does not dominate. Not a "big beer" exactly, really suprisingly mellow and tame for a 10% beer. Very tasty.

Booze does not show at all, hard to believe this is 10%. Almost want to say the body is thin, but it doesn't feel thin so much as it just doesn't feel as thick and sweet as a 10% porter usually would.

Appearance: Very dark brown in color with a light tan head rocky head as it thins out thick lacing is left behind.

Aroma: Espresso, cocoa, smokiness, char, almost burnt hops, very dark roasted malts.

Taste: Chocolate malts, espresso, notes of vanilla and bourbon. Very dark roasted hops, char. Very smooth mouthfeel much like melted dark chocolate.

Notes: The alcohol blends in very well and is rather drinkable. A remarkable beer. Cheers.

Pours an opaque deep brown with ruby highlights and a frothy one inch light tan head that dissipates slowly, leaving sheets of lacing.

Chocolate, coffee, and kidney beans form the initial around. Earthy tones are rampant. Roast malt and a bit of dark fruit round out the profile.

Chocolate dominated the initial flavor, slightly sweet, with roast malt kicking in mid palate, and carrying through to a fairly bitter, slightly oaky finish. There's an earthy, kidney bean-like quality throughout, which complements the coffee character well. Dark cherries emerge late.

Body is fairly thick and a touch creamy, with moderate carbonation. Alcohol warmth is slightly overwhelming.

The earthy bean character is undeniable. Oak balances the sweetness well. There's enough chocolate character to keep things in check. Interesting brew.

Poured into a 12 oz snifter, best before July 2013. Pours a dark brown, with a 2 inch tan head, that slowly settles in patchy bubbles, leaving behind plenty of lace. Smell is dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, licorice, and some vanilla. Taste is all of that, vanilla leads the flavors, with some roasted coffee in the finish. Body is maybe medium, plenty of life, on the dry side, and easy drinking for its heft. This is a solid brew. I drank it close to room temperature and it tasted the best of the 4 pack I bought.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Color was a very dark maroonish-red, that verged on black, but not quite. A bit of translucency was evident. Tons of bubbles rising from the bottom, to a nice solid 2 finger thick head. Head was rich and thick, with a fair it of side cling. Aroma was a slightly sweet, chocolate smell, with a very small hint of acidic in the backend. Taste had both coffee and chocolate, without either overpowering the other or being the main focal point. The coffee notes kicked in first, with just a tab of bitterness, but then mellowed out and left a nice sweet cocoa flavor on the tongue. Coated the mouth extremely well, not overly bubbly with a bit of chew. Overall a very solid beer. Perhaps a bit expensive ($3.75 for the single can) but a very solid beer, right up my alley.

12oz, BBD 7/10/13
Riedel unmarked snifter

A: Pours out a deep chestnut brown color. In the glass it appears black and not much light gets through. Think layer of three fingers light tan head, 3+ fingers of tight bubbles. Leaving some sticky lacing.

S: Getting that coffee bean smell. Certainly the most dominate. Then you get milk chocolate. Actually some sweet malt goodness coming through.

T: Up front, definitely pulling that coffee flavor. It's a very muted light roast. It meshes really well mid-palate with the creamy milk chocolate that comes in. Very pleasant. Lingering dark chocolate bitterness. Dry finish.

M: Full bodied. Some creaminess.

Sixpoint - 3Beans - 12fl oz can

Continuing on my journey through Sixpoint brews, this one was a logical next step.

Look - Pours dark and settles black with a hint of brown around the edges. Huge, soapy head, lacing from the Gods. Carbonation apparent when pouring, brew settles in waves into the glass.

Smell - Cocoa, mocha, and espresso. Malt is there as well.

Taste - Creamy chocolate with subtle coffee and malty overtones throughout. Supremely delicious.

Mouthfeel - Sits a bit on the sweeter side but not overbearing, a bit sticky even but again not a big detractor. Insanely drinkable, no way of knowing this is 10% until you've finished one.

Overall - This brew is simply amazing! I must have got a very fresh batch since the characteristics seemed to point to that. Each sip impressed me all over again throughout.

12oz can into tulip.
This can only brewery is really growing on me. I always seem to find a new gem to bring North every time I head into the states.

Almost completely opaque, dark brown pour. Looks like cold coffee. Half finger light tan head. Lacing is decent.

Slight coffee with subtle coffee and some chocolate notes. Brown sugar, vanilla and some burnt toast.

Burnt toast, dark stone fruits, subtle coffee, fresh cocoa powder. Potent vanilla after a slight alcohol burn.

Light to medium body, decent carbonation.

Served in a Port City snifter.

A: Not totally pitch black at all... dark ruby red actually. A slight, off-white that melted instantaneously.

S: Kinda like dark fruit cake icing, understated, with an amber ale buried in there somewhere.

T: Like a true "beer" as opposed to a deep, rich, coffee infused bomb. Kinda thin actually... much more so than I was expecting.

M: Kinda boozy, with only a slight bit of bitterness on the end. A bit of lacing left on the glass.

O: I was disappointed with this one and it score very low (unanimously) across the board at a recent coffee beer tasting.

A: Poured from a 12oz. can into a pint glass. Thick, creamy, near-opaque and dark-brown in color with a tight-knit, 1-finger beige head. A touch of lacing down the glass.

S: Malty up-front, with a lager sentiment and strong, but balanced notes of mocha coffee and earth. Some boozy fermentation smell on the back-end. I was expecting to get socked in the face with the aromas of coffee, chocolate and hooch (given the 10%abv,) but am pleasantly surprised at how relatively smooth and balanced it smells.

T: Complexity abounds in this robust and sweet beer. It hits right off with a coffee malt front, and swallows with an earthy, chocolate-covered cherry cordial flavor. A good amount of booze in the flavor, but I find it more appealing in this brew than usual. Perhaps because the hotness of the booze is tempered by the dry cocao flavors, or the gritty coffee notes. Touches of vanilla, dark chocolate milkshake, and dirt in the flavor really keep it mellower than anticipated. This beer has a lot going on, flavor-wise, but it does it in the perfect balance to be delicious.

M: A strange mix of syrup and chalk. The syrupy sweetness is on the tongue when the beer is in your mouth, but the beer finishes with an almost chalk-like texture on the swallow and afterfeel. It must be the cocao husks that lend this feel.

O: This is a great once-in-a-while beer, which packs a lot of flavor and a complexity of character to boot. I'm usually not one for "flavored" beer, or even beer brewed with flavoring agents other than hops, but this one really does it right. A trip to the jungle of flavor in your mouth!

Four pack purchased at FreeBridge

Dark brown body, ruby highlights, and a magnificent light tan head which rose above the rim and held with terrific cohesion.

Wonderful inviting cocoa and coffee aroma.

Taste is coffee and chocolate, along with raisins and other dark fruits. Well masked alcohol.

Medium plus mouthfeel. Could have been chewier.

Tasty, enjoyable. Grab while you can.

Poured from a 12oz can into a glass.

Poured mahogany with ruby hues. Big head of off white foam and lots of carbonation.

Smells slightly burnt and metallic. Definite strong "day old" coffee aroma with some herbal notes.

Decent coffee flavor with a bitter hop finish. Not much chocolate to speak of.

Overall a pretty tasty brew, not as epic as I would have hoped but a good effort. Good mouthfeel and a decent amount of carbonation.

12oz can. Purchased for ~$3. Best before July 2013.

A- Dark brown body with good clarity. A bit hazy due to the last cm of the can having some mild sediment. Big rocky light brown head with lots of lacing and good retention.

S- Brown sugar, cola, figs, chocolate, and sweetened diner coffee. It's a very sugary nose. It's a very syrupy sweetness with light notes of coffee.

T- Really sweet. Roast flavors from the coffee atop an almost overly sugary sweetness. Brown sugar malt flavors with a cocoa nib bitterness. The sweetness continues to build as the beer warms with really mild roast flavors that are overwhelmed. The hop bitterness is relatively mild when held up to the malt profile. The flavors just don't compliment each other. The roast flavors are too mild and the sweetness too big.

MF- The mouthfeel is medium with soft and somewhat low carbonation. It's just too soft. I'd prefer a creamier feel and I feel that this carbonation does not support the flavors appropriately.

O- This beer is okay. I enjoy coffee beers, I love porters and stouts, but this beer just did not come together for me. That's not to say that it's not a good beer, but just not to me.

We pour a brew of the deepest brown, with maroons letting up around the edges with light. It holds a one and a half finger head of light brown foam, showing great retention. This leaves rings of thick lacing as it eventually goes. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears active. The aroma gives rich coffee malts, light metallic adjuncts, booze, medicinal phenols, molasses, spicy flashes of cayenne pepper fullness, milk chocolates, and warming lactic acidity. Our first impression is that the flavoring is nicely full, with a big malty profile, but the real star is the soft, smooth feel of it. As we sip, metallic saltiness, fiber-laden bean skins, smoke-roasted chocolate malts, raw coffee beans, cacao nibs, fusel booziness, and hints of vanilla start things off. We peak with charred malt bitterness, wet yeasty bitterness, tin, and flashes of white sugar sweetness. The finish comes with chipotle pepper spice, coffee and chocolate malts, more raw coffee beans, more fusel booze, black pepper, sweet honey essence, and clovey phenols. The aftertaste breathes of cinnamon, sweaty saltiness, caramel sugars, vanilla sweetness, tinny metallics, bitter raw chocolates, big black peppers, and raw booziness. The body is full, and the carbonation is medium, but frothy. Each sip gives nice froth, cream, slurp, smack, and finishing pop. The beer is silky smooth and velvety through the swallow, coating the palate on the way down. There is eventual chalky dryness, with light astringency of booze and coffee malts. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, the most enjoyable things about this beer was the flavoring, and the silky soft feel. The “three beans” were actually all apparent at one point or another, each adding depth and complexity. The malts through the backbone were strong, roasty, charred, smoky, and above all, flavorful. This, coupled with the soft, frothy feel, made for a wildly drinkable, delicious brew.

12 oz can at fridge temp poured into a snifter. "Best Before 10JUL2013" stamped on the bottom.

Pours out a nice dark dark brown color, not quite black, some ruby highlights when held up to a light. A nice big fluffy light tan colored head that forms a nice cap off the pour. It slowly recedes to a thick, slightly rocky layer with tons of thick sticky lacing.

Cocoa and hazelnut first come to mind, milk chocolate all over. A fruity ester with a hint of alcohol as it warms.

Some really nice melding of milk chocolate and coffee. Some hazelnut, fruity esters and some light bitter roast. A nice range of chocolate flavors from semi sweet milk chocolate to dark bitter chocolate. A bit of piney hops with some lingering bitterness in the finish. Not terribly complex, but still some nice flavors.

I would've liked a bit more body in this beer, finishes a little dryer than expected. The 10% ABV is hidden very nicely.

Not a bad beer, I certainly won't have a problem finishing the four pack, but I'm not really sure if I'd buy another. Had the body been a little bigger, thicker, and the flavors been bigger, more complex, I think this really would've been an amazing beer. Worth a try.

Nice dark brown to reddish color, not as deep black as a standard porter. Nice roasted malt smell, but with a lingering artificial sweetness

Pretty low mouthfeel for a 10% abv beer. The sweetness of the coffee and vanilla kind of overwhelms the other flavors.

Overall not a bad beer, much to sweet for my preference though.

A - super dark brown, with some red shining though, doesnt seem to be black, raises up a half a finger of light brown head

S - roasted malts and of course the adjuncts coffee and cacao create the aroma of this porter. The chocolate is a mild milk chocolate variety that blends with the coffee for a low key mocha type aroma

T - the malts start off rather normal, nondescript. After a moment of trepidation, "will this beer be boring?", the coffee and chocolate kick in and sweel then fade into the finish.

M&D&O- wheres the 10%? Sixpoint does a fine job of maksing a double digit ABV behind some solid, albeit not terribly earth shattering flavors. A fine porter with great flavors, it deserves a place among a porter lineup, but it doesn't redefine the style, I guess I am trying to say, this is a good beer and Sixpoint continues to impress. And that the good people over at Sixpoint should send a pint glass in my direction! Ooops, was that out loud.

On draft at Capone's.

The beer has a brown cola body with a thick, creamy, beige head. Ample lacing coats the glass. the aroma is coffee beans all the way. The flavor is big time coffe. Chocolate covered espresso beans, roast. Medium bodied and creamy on the palate. Alcohol content hidden beautifully. Perhaps this beer is one dimensional, but if you enjoy a big, rich coffee stout, you should seek this out. Yum.

smells of roasted malt, chocolate, and lots of espresso.

tastes like it smells with lots of chocolate and espresso also a good amount of bitterness. Nothing is overwhelming or overpowering though. This is a very well balanced beer. Dark chocolate and bitterness linger on the tongue, leaving a bit on the watery side, but not in a bad way. The alcohol is very well hidden for 10%.

The body is medium with a creamy mouthfeel and prickly carbonation.

Pours pretty much black with just a hint of dark brown and ruby red towards the bottom of the glass. Finger length off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a thick lacing around the edges. Smells of mostly coffee beans, as well as some vanilla/carmel, bakers chocolate, and some roasted malt. Taste starts with intense, roasted coffee beans. Much stronger taste than the aroma suggests. Almost imparts an earthy flavor from the coffee beans. Then smooths out in the middle. Get some vanilla or carmel that acts like a coffee creamer and lightens the intensity of the coffee. Then the finish brings back some intense coffee flavors, in addition to some carmel, some bittersweet chocolate, as well as some bitterness from the fairly heavy hop presence. Sweetness increases as the flavor profile moves on. Pretty full body with a creamy and slick mouthfeel. Lively carbonation that reminds you that this is an imperial porter, not an imperial stout, and makes the beer much more refreshing for a full-bodied beer. No alcohol detected in the smell or taste. Good stuff.

A - Pours a dark brown body, borders on black but lets just enough light through to prove otherwise. Gorgeous two fingers worth of light khaki foam with large bubbles. Great lacing and long retention.

S - Lots of fresh roasted coffee and sweet dark chocolate. A touch of charred malts, vanilla and dough. Aroma is excellent.

T - Really nice strong coffee leading into some milk and dark chocolate. Rather strong with a lasting bitterness. Nice balance between sweet and roast.

Wow, looking at other reviews, gremlins must have swapped out the swill I'm currently drinking.

A: Pours black. Ecru head, dissipates into wall-to-wall dusting of suds. Lacing sticks to the sides. Light penetrates, ultimately devolving into a slightly watery glass of Coke with lacing on top.

S: I could try to be creative, and pull out the occasional hints of coffee, vanilla, rising bread. But it's hard. What hits my nose is a combo of bitterness and alcohol that pierces the nose and eyes.

T: Again, I can detect "hints" of this and that (a little coffee in the aftertaste); but otherwise, beyond an ashy, dry bitterness, it's alcohol and that's about it.

M: Pretty creamy. Medium body, holds together well.

O: Disappointing and borderline unpleasant (and that's from a guy with a refrigerator full of 20 different stouts/porters at any given time). In the two-word descriptions that I try to record for every beer (so I can best remember them), I'd use either "Mocha Everclear" or "Big Blech"... Missed it here (or else I got an insanely bad batch).

This beer poured out as a deep brown color that is basically black. There is a big foamy tan head on top. The lacing is light along with the retention. The smell of the beer is chocolatey with a bit of coffee on the nose as well. It also smells sweet. The taste of the beer is roasted, the coffee isn't that strong. There is a bitter dark chocolate flavor in the finish. The mouthfeel is pretty creamy, light carbonation and smooth. Overall it's not all that impressive. I'm surprised the rating is as high as it is. Not something I need to have again.

A very cool idea by Sixpoint.

Pours out a very dark brown with ruby highlights and a 3 finger khaki head.

The aroma is kinda subtle, but mainly dominated by chocolate and coffee with hints of vanilla and some roasty notes.

The taste is also dominated by chocolate and coffee, roasty malt notes and a subtle amount of vanilla. Somewhat bitter, but balanced very well with the sweetness. It's a nice tasting beer, but the chocolate and coffee aren't as vibrant or "in your face" as I would have liked or expected.

The mouthfeel is extremely creamy and smooth and the body is pretty full for a Porter. There is some definite alcohol notes in the aroma and flavor and you can feel the 10%.

Overall, this is a decent beer that doesn't blow me away and could have used more pronounced coffee and chocolate notes.
