Appearance: black in color, opaque, 1 inch head, moderate carbonation

Smell: cream, toffee, and coffee

Taste: caramel, charred roasted malt, black coffee, and cream at the end

Mouthfeel: rich, bitter with slight sweetness at the end, medium-heavy body, moderate carbonation

Overall: For a domestic Baltic porter, this is not bad. This has got a lot of the black coffee taste that I was expecting. This beer is rich and solid and a must for a coffee drinker. That said, I prefer my tea and while I am happy to have one, I think the four pack would be a bit much for me.

A - very dark brown with reddish edges; huge, thick, dense, foamy, brownish head that has great retention

S - faint roasted malts and some faint coffee; an aroma akin to lager yeast

T - coffee, some chocolate, big bitter finish, spicy alcohol, grainy aftertaste

M - full bodied, well carbonated, big alcohol

This is a bit disappointing. It has the intense coffee notes that I was anticipating and the cacao made its presence known. These two notes are very good. However, there was a faint grainy aftertaste as well as a burning alcohol presence which really slowed down the drinking experience for me. In the end, this was still an enjoyable offering that I will definitely try to get my hands on again.

Poured into tulip, best before 10JUL2013

A: Deep, almost-black, brown that’s just transparent when held up to light, with a beige, fine, creamy one finger head and delicate lacing

S: Bitter chocolate, roasted coffee beans on the nose. Sweet, bready malts. Smells a bit like the inside of a high quality candy shop.

T: Bitter black coffee hits and wraps around your mouth. Roasted malts with smokey, bittersweet chocolate and caramel flavors. Slight hints of fresh baked bread. Very little in the way of hops, but maybe some slight earthy tones. Bitterness in the finish lingers like a good cup of espresso would.

M: Smooth, creamy and slightly viscous mouthfeel. Little carbonation, but it tingles on the tongue.

O: A coffee lovers dream. If you want a coffee beer, I would choose this over other coffee porters and even Founders Breakfast Stout. This is one smooth beer and very enjoyable one if you like coffee and roasty porters. Quite a good offering from Sixpoint, I wish they would make this a permanent addition to their line up.

Poured from the can a deep mahagony with well defined half finger light tan colored head,a little lighter in color than most I have had from the style.Aromas of dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, and earth,it seems quite dry and no alcohol sweetness.Starts out with deep coffee roast with underlying unsweetened chocolate, mild molasses-like sweetness that quickly gets hit with a healthy dose of piney hops in the finish. This is a hopped up Baltic Porter, one of the dryer and complex of the style I have had,it's just a little sharp in the feel but this is pretty damn good.

March 28th, 2013.

On the nose it smells oddly like a bonfire; the oak, cocoa and some very roasty malts come through with might. Along with this melody is earthy coffee.

This beer definitely takes some time to breathe. I was struggling with it at first, its flavors and taste were very reserved but with some time it opens up.

Upfront on the palate it is full of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. As it slides through the mouth the coffee comes out a bit more and as it progresses towards the back of the mouth it turns into liquid chocolate with a touch of oak and vanilla. The finish is bitter and boozy.

The mouthfeel is absurdly thick and creamy, absolutely amazing.

Well balanced and not as sweet as I expected. A really nice beer.

Pours a semi-opaque dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Smells like the inside of my coffee bean hopper. Yum.

Rich notes of cocoa, french pressed coffee, and dark berry skins. Snappy hops. Alcohol is huge, maybe a bit too huge. I might sound like a diabetic saying this but I could have used a touch more malt. Or -- a decrease in alcohol. This is a bit too boozy. I really like the overall flavor, though, and find besides the alcohol, it has a nice hop balance. The booze, coupled with the bitter coffee-wearing-a-hops dress finish, is a bit harsh on the palate.

Medium-full bodied. Dry, prickly finish. And as for the identified style here on BA, I first thought this was maybe an Imperial Brown of some ilk.

Sixpoint is solid and so is this brew. I don't know if I'd buy more than one at a time, though. One is probably enough for now.

12oz skinny can poured into a Sixpoint resin snifter.

The beer pours a nice, deep cola brown color, almost black. A big, cloudy, frothy bone colored head sits atop the beer, about 2 and a half fingers high that has moderate retention and leaves some decent lacing behind. Intense coffee on the nose, lots of roast with some dark chocolate behind it, touches of vanilla and lots of thick, rich, dark grain that is quite sweet. Lot's of bitter, roasted coffee and dark chocolate on the tongue, very intense, a bit harsh at times with sweet vanilla, oaky flavors that bring out the malted grain. The acidic finish is there, but it clashes a bit with the sweet flavors. The body is lively, bubbly, carbonated well with a lightly acidic finish that is fairly smooth.

Verdict: A very intense beer from Sixpoint and possibly too much for me. This is really a palate killer when I wasn't expecting it to be. I'd hoped for a soft, sweet, silky beer that highlights the adjuncts but got something that was punishing and brutal.

Thanks to Momar42 for the 12 oz can! Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is a two finger mocha shade. I'm fairly impressed with the retention given the gravity, and the lacing left down the glass is beautiful and consistent.

S: There's a good amount of chocolate and coffee on the nose. The coffee seems to take on a hazelnut quality to it; always a good thing here. A bit of booze come through to the nose, as well.

T: Alcohol is far more prevalent on the flavor profile, unfortunately. Most of the booziness is concentrated on the opening flavors. The finish, however, sees a surge of lightly roasted nuttiness that I enjoy somewhat, along with some more heavily roasted coffee. Some umami notes tie this together - actually, a lot of umami notes tie this together. Other notes of hazelnut and toasted oak appear, giving it some good complexity. Ultimately, I think the savory qualities are a bit too strong for their own good.

M: There's good creaminess within the texture, but it's a bit more carbonated than I like from such a creamy feel. More damning is the fact that it doesn't go down particularly easily, likely from the prevalent alcohol.

O: I think this could have kicked ass if it were, say, 8% and just a touch sweeter (not cloying, though). As it stands, it feels too much like hard work drinking it. Not bad at all, though - certainly a unique take on a 'coffee and chocolate' brew.

This doesn't fall into the traditional baltic porter category for me. The chocolate and coffee jump into things and mesh with the typical characteristics in a pretty good fashion. It all seems to fight for dominance though never wins. Feel is good. Drinkability is good. I can dig it.

Thanks to st9647v3 for this slender 12oz can.

I'm always a coffee beer skeptic. They sound great in principle, but often remind me of stale coffee. How will this fare?

First of all, I love the can. I like cans generally, and this slim profile even more. It's pretty in the glass, too; swirly like a nitro beer, with a tight tan head. It smells like expensive chocolate and stale coffee. And that's the rub. I would have loved this without the coffee. There are decent caramel notes in there, too.

The taste backs the smell 100%. It's full and sweet and bitter and full of good chocolate, and doused with stale coffee. Heavy sigh. I would love this beer without the coffee. I still like it, but still.

Poured from a skinny tall boy can into a Samuel Adams perfect pint glass.

A: Darker brown color with light escaping from the edges. Normally aggressive pour leads to a full two finger head that's latte foam colored. Very good head retention and the lacing clings to the side like glue.

S: Full flavored coffee (not burnt), espresso, cocoa and some grain. Excellent nose.

T: Better on the tongue than on the nose. This tastes like a perfect iced mocha made with cocoa instead of chocolate. Lots of espresso, some vanilla and a touch of bready yeast.

M: Perfectly carbonated, sharp finish. Good mouthfeel.

O: A superb brew. I went into this not expecting a ton but hoping to really like it. I was supremely impressed.

Poured out of a 12 oz can into my tulip.

A – Deep brown to black on the pour. Huge two ringers of bubbly, frothy tan head that left nice rings down the glass and had good retention.

S – Very nice chocolate smell. Coffee, vanilla and mocha.

T – Strong coffee flavors like an espresso. Much lighter chocolate taste then the smell would suggest. Light notes of vanilla throughout. Caramel flavors at the end and a deep breath of alcohol lingers after each taste. You can really feel the ABV. Also finishes with a nice roastiness, a touch of smoke and a bite of malty bitterness.

M – Medium bodied. A touch thin on the palate though it does have a creaminess to it.

O – Very nice tasty brew. The ABV is present but not overwhelming. It has a nice complex taste and warms nicely. Definitely a sipper.

Recieved in a trade from jageraholic. Thanks for the can bro!

Poured from a can, dated 'BEST BEFORE 10 JUL 2013', into my Deschutes tulip glass...

A - Pours a dark nut brown color, with a huge 4 finger light brown head. It hangs around for a while, but when it does fade, it leaves behind some nice lacing.

S - The smell is a little weird. It's a mix of coffee and butter scotch candy. Let's see what it tastes like...

T/M - The smell doesn't do the taste justice at all! The front of the taste is like a nice iced coffee, the middle opens up to some of the dark & carmel malts, and ends with an almost bittersweet chocolate finish. Really nice evolution of flavors, with no evidence of alcohol at all. Kinda surprising since this beer is 10%. Medium mouthfeel, perfect carbonation.

O - This one really surprised me. After the smell, I was expecting much, but this one is actually pretty damn good. All the flavors of this one are very well balanced, and very drinkable. Thanks again jageraholic for sending this can my way!

A - A hard pour produces a dark brown, medium roast looking beer. Big frothy tan head, large bubbles within. Webbed lacing left on the glass also. Head very long lasting.

S - Deep coffee bean roast. Really strong coffee profile here. A bit of cacao, but pretty one sided. Expected with what they're going for.

T - I was pretty suprised by the flavor actually . Not the coffee bomb I was expecting. There is the roasted bean flavor for sure, but a sweetness in here too. The natural ingredients bring out some chocolate sweetness and not the usual bitter coffee bite. There is a bit of alcohol bite however with strong heat on the backend of this.

M - Medium bodied brew with high levels of carbonation. Alc not felt in the mouth but certainly on the way down.

O - I enjoyed the sweetness in this and it really suprised me in terms of your normal coffee beer varieties. The 10% abv is detected though with a lot of heat on the way down, I suppose the ingredients used contributed to high sugar/high abv. Glad to have tried this limited release.

Poured from a 12oz. skinny can into a Hardywood Park snifter

A: Aggressive poor yielded close to a 2 finger yellow-tan head

S: Instant coffee with less alcohol than what I would have expected. SOme hints of background chocolate notes.

T: Give this has been cellared for about a month, the taste shouldn't have really evolved. Still a stong hit of alcohol, but not so much that it overwhelms the coffee and chocolate...very well balanced

M: A little thin, possibly due to the 10% ABV. Average mouth.

O: Slightly above average, and at a great price point. Was hoping for a little more of a coffee/alcohol balance, which may occur over time. Plan on keeping this one in the cellar for the next few months to see how it evolves.

Can into wine glass.

Pour a robust chocolaty dark red color with 1 finger cafe 'o' le' color head. Intense lacing! Japanese ocean surf paintings come to mind, no kidding!

Smells of dark caramel malts with chocolate malts all over the place. Roasted coffee notes come through with a touch of alcohol. Licorice, anise hint of dark fruit.

Tastes of licorice and darki complex chocolte with coffee roasted malts. A touch of bitter and some earthyness. A little citrus rind bitter on the finish.

Good carbonation froth fades fast to a thin almost watery consistensy.

Very interesting beer good coffee and chocolate meld, not overpowering.

The beer pours almost black with over a finger of light tan head. The head fades to a layer on top of the pour and leaves some lacing on the glass. The smell is very roasty with a strong coffee and dark chocolate presence. The taste isn't very sweet at all and there is hardly a trace of alcohol. Lots of roasted malts along with the coffee and dark chocolate. The finish has a roasty bitterness to it. This is very easy to drink and I never would have guessed the abv. I'd definitely have more.

Aggressive pour from the can.

Nice deep black with 2 fingers of wet sand colored head, which fades over a minute or two with some residue.

Nose is pretty subdued, largely with flavors of toffee and caramel.

Taste is predominantly milk chocolate with some rich, toffee maltiness. Finishes with light coffee roastiness. Don't really notice the ABV at all.

Mouth feel is decent, nice body with a lingering tingle of coffee and chocolate.

It's pretty decent overall, just not incredible. I'm not really sure what to call it. BA labels it as a Baltic porter, which is probably close, but not quite right. I've see it also called an imperial stout (not even close) or a generic coffee stout (lacks some of the coffee punch for me). So it is a solid, drinkable, enjoyable beer with some good but not overly potent flavors. Would love to try it on tap some day to see if I feel differently. Interestingly, I often feel this way about Sixpoint's cans, that they lack the flavor punch that I am hoping them to have. Except for Resin.

12 fl oz slim can served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a lumpy, rocky khaki head of three fingers. Color is a dark, brown/amber color. Retention's decent given the high ABV. I'm looking forward to it.

S - Unrefined cacao is prominent. Burnt caramel, toffee, and fig lend a noticeable sweetness. The coffee is surprisingly subdued, but present. Faint alcohol. Moderate strength.

T - Freshly ground Italian roast coffee opens, countered by semisweet chocolate and dark fruit notes. Boozy on the finish, to its detriment. The bitter, roasty notes and alcohol presence upset the balance noticeably. A little restrained still. I'd like to see it even more coffee forward.

M - Medium bodied and a little thin.

D - A good porter. Definitely a sipper. I appreciate the smaller format I wish I'd see in more high ABV beers. I'd try it again, preferably on draught.

12oz can into a Russian River Tulip

A- Pitch black with a 3 finger dark cream head. Dissipated to a small ring in less than a minute.

S- Dark and toasty malt notes with a little bit of chocolate. Did not get much coffee at first, but as it warms you find it.

T- Good dark malt flavor. Alot of roasted flavors jump right at you. Actually has a little hoppy bit to it but its masked by the chocolate and coffee. The taste I am thinking is chocolate might be something else, but it tastes alot like artificial chocolate powder that is a little bitter sweet. Might actually be just the coffee showing up differently for me.

M- Big and full. Fitting for the style and much what I expected.

O- I've had a couple of these and while I think it is a personal thing I am thrown off by what I feeling is a bittersweet chocolate taste in this beer. Something intrigues me though, as I keep coming back to try and figure it out. Always enjoy what I get from Sixpoint and will probably end up buying 4 more of these at some point.
