12 oz can was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer and left some nice lacing on the glass. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Chocolate, coffee, molasses, malt, and vanilla.

Taste: Same as above with mild hop and coffee bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full bodied, low to medium carbonation, creamy, and some tingly bitterness too.

Overall: Pretty solid Baltic porter and in a can.

12oz can into tulip.

A - Dark brown-black with a titanic frothy tan head.

S - Spent coffee grounds, roasted malt, sweet cocoa, subtle dark fruit.

T - Burnt, sweet roasted malt throughout. Milk chocolate and black coffee blends well with the strong roasty flavor. Mild earthy hops impart a light to mild bitterness on the back end. Finishes with hints of toffee, vanilla, dark fruit, and grainy malt.

M - Creamy and smooth, medium body. Medium carbonation, somewhat dry finish. Just the right amount of warming alcohol.

O - A balanced, pleasurable stout/porter. Where is the alcohol? It really drinks like a 5% ABV porter. 3Beans is a prime candidate for a sipping/dessert beer, but it also goes down really easy. My advice is to take your time with this one. I expected a bit more heft in the body, but overall it's a well crafted, flavorful beer.

12oz. can poured into a Flying Dog goblet (best before 7/10/13)

A: Dark, almost pitch black with excellent lacing. The head diminishes rapidly though.

S: Complex with a lot of notes. Espresso, just brewed black coffee, freshly ground coffee beans, malted barley, sweet dark chocolate. The cacao and coffee really come through and mix quite well.

T: Excellent blend of flavors that is a complex combination. It really tastes like it smells. Lots of coffee and chocolate, with a nice hint of malty sweetness. I really don't get any hops. You really have to be paying attention to even notice the bit of pine resin in there, because it is similar to the coffee and cocoa flavors here. Not a bad thing in this case. I didn't really get any romano beans, but that may only come through in the rich, full earthy body that it has, which probably is a bit antagonistic with the hops.

M: Nice even carbonation that lends a good bit of coarseness. Quite subtle and nice, which goes well with the flavors here. Overall, quite smooth though.

O: Finally, a Sixpoint that I really like. This is great. Right in line with the recent Dayman and Espresso RIS. I loved the combination and concept here, probably because it was perfectly executed. Now this is how you do chocolate and coffee, in a beer. I haven't had many Baltic Porters, but this one was top notch.

Yeah... Raul is feeling this one. Thanks to a nice trade from the Garden State, Raul got himself some of this goodie sauce.

Pretty much just solid like a #2 after eating Del Taco after Midnight. Beautiful dark textures and flavors like taking acid on the moon.

Raul likes this, Raul likes this a lot.

12 oz can pours a dark crimson color with some highlighting when held to light. Thick tan froth sticks around a good while and leaves great lace...good looking brew here.

Nose is coffee mostly with some ancillary aromas of lactose, chocolate and toasted white bread.

Taste is a very nice blend of coffee and cocoa with a soft, grassy hop bite. The ABV is very well hidden and goes down really smooth. This is top notch actually as far as non-bomber imperial stout/porter offerings. I was a bit hesitant to drop 13 bones on a 4-pack, but am glad I did so now and might even go pick up another. The smoothness of the beer along with a silky body is quite impressive. The legumes do seem to add a richer texture, especially if this is indeed a porter...it gives it a more stout-esque character.

Thanks to rgilbert for this one.

Poured from a sharp looking 12oz can, best before 10 Jul 2013.

Appearance: Dark brown body with cherry wood tinges; huge, light brown head that really sits in the glass.

Smell: Fresh cocoa beans, coffee, oatmeal cookies, raisins.

Taste: Awesome combo of strong coffee and bitter-sweet cocoa. Liquid chocolate in finish.

Mouthfeel: Good bitterness, a bit acidic, roasted feel lurks in the background.

Overall: Not quite the smooth stout but overall a good stout.

Best before July 10, 2013. Poured into a snifter.

A - Deep brown hue with a beautiful mocha head. Nice carbonation in this head, good retention with above average lacing.

S - Bitter coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, light dark malts and a touch of caramel.

T -Bit of everything mentioned in the nose with an apparent lack of balance. Tons of good flavor here, just requires calibration.

M - Medium+ body with large carbonation for the style.

O - The booze is well masked and this beer certainly has a unique flavor, although nothing that I will regret forgoing in the future.

Sixpoint 3BEANS
12 0z. can, "BEST BEFORE 10 JULY 2013 0808OK+"

An interesting beer to be sure. What were the beans used? Coffee? Yes. Cocoa? Yes. And the Romano bean... ? I've never heard of it. But I looked it up and they're kind of like green beans. And I think that's interesting in itself, that brewers used to use beans as an adjunct, an that Sixpoint's done it in modern times. (I'm assuming they've just used the seeds, and not the whole bean).

Onward, it's a pretty immense beer. It's black-brown in color with a creamy head of tan that holds well and leaves sheets of craggy, spotty lace along the glass. Nice.

It smells of coffee for sure. Dark, rich, roasty and acidic black coffee like espresso. In fact, in tasting it, it leaves the flavor of a chocolate coated espresso bean behind. So, yes, there's chocolate as well. Intense, dark and mainly bitter chocolate. You smell them both upfront, and then you taste them both as well. The only thing missing is the Romano bean, but I'm guessing that might be adding to it's body, which is a little bit beyond medium-full. And in fact it might be fuller, but I think some of the 10% abv. cuts through that. Some alcohol is found in the flavor and aroma as well, but it's not really brash, and it just adds a bit of a raspy edge to the taste. And on that note, there's a little bit of yeasty fruitiness, and a vanilla note and some oaky woodiness to it as well. Did they age this in oak? Or is that just the dryness of the alcohol combining with the coffee acidity to give the impression of woody dryness?

So, overall, an interesting beer. It doesn't quite live up to the hype of the concept, but it is a pretty solid chocolate and coffee strong ale. Worth trying.

Well I dropped the 4 bucks for the single on this through Halftime beverage. Was pretty much the only way to try this beer since I couldn't find it anywhere local. Best by July 10th 2013
A - Wow very lively with carbonation giving me tons of bubbles in the glass and a 1/2 inch of deep mocha head. Looks also like an imperial stout should with inescapable blackness void and no ruby coloring!
S - Well your not going to get founders breakfast stout but it does have quite a bit of coffee in the nose. Mostly roast and some dark chocolate funny I was really expecting more. Maybe faded?
T - Has its moments of both coffee, chocolate, roast, and vanilla with the typical house yeast to me gives it a weird metallic flavor mid palate that leads to the finish with bittering hops. I read it is the flavor of "burnt tobacco" never did have it this strong but I don't like it. I really wish this wasn't very distracting but damn man it taste like can! Drinking this out of my tulip glass so it can't be from licking can either.
M - Medium bodied it does a great job hiding the ABV beneath hops even though it does show it in the finish.

Overall I am going away from this very disappointed. As a lover of many imperial stouts some overly hoppy, others chocolaty, many just run of the mill this one does deliver everything but fails to be more than just a homebrew effort that doesn't deserve such high praise.

SixPoint 3Beans

12oz. hot chocolate brown colored can with a colorful shield on the front. This white shield has their trademark of an orange 6 point star, a wired oval with beans and leaves in it, and the name of the beer in large brown letters. The back of the can has all the mandatory US info and a brief description of the beer. The bottom of the can has a best before date. My can is best before 10 July 2013.

When poured into a Cycle Brewing Snifter, this coffee beer poured a coffee black. No cream and sugar in this coffee, but there was a small glimmer of dark burgundy at the bottom of the beer. That was the only place where light could shine through this beer. On top of this coffee beer was a good sized 1/2 an inch light beige head of foam. Great retention that left behind a skim of foam and plenty of beige streaks of lace around the glass.

It looked like coffee, did it smell like coffee? It sure as hell did! This aroma wasn't going to play around. Up front was the thick strong scent of dry roasted coffee beans. Not cheap coffee beans. You can smell the quality of the coffee beans. Right behind the coffee was the dark chocolate, roasted malt, a drop of caramel, a pinch of alcohol, and a faint whiff of vanilla. Lets just say that nose couldn't get enough of this beer.

It looked like coffee, smelled like coffee, but did it taste like coffee? You bet your ass it did. Like the aroma, the taste wasn't going to play around either. Right up front was the strong taste of dry roasted coffee beans. Quality coffee bean taste. No Folger's crystals in this taste. Waiting for its turn behind the thick coffee wall was the bitter dark chocolate and dark roasted malt. After those flavors had their little fun, the taste then finished up with a sprinkle of vanilla, a dab of caramel, a raisin or two, more coffee, a pinch of burnt tobacco, and a drop of alcohol. Even though this beer clocks in at 10% ABV, I liked how there wasn't much alcohol in the taste. I'm sure the thick dry roasted coffee flavor had something to do with that.

This was clearly a full bodied coffee beer. There was no denying that. As for the aftertaste, I'm sure you can guess what was in that. Juicy fruits? No! The aftertaste was thick with dry roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, roasted malt, burnt tobacco, and a drop or two of alcohol. This thick roasted aftertaste will leave a coating on the roof of your mouth. It will take a few glasses of water to get rid of it. I could feel the alcohol working its magic on my body.

Looked like coffee, smelled like coffee, tasted like coffee, but its not a coffee. Don't let the small can fool you. Its not the size of the can that matters. Its what is on the inside that matters. This beer packs a big dry roasted coffee punch. If you like your coffee beers then it would be a good idea to seek this one out. I wish I had a few more cans.

12 oz can poured into a snifter.

Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a finger of off-white foam. Aroma is roasted, tannic, bitter, astringent stale coffee-like sensation mixed with unsweetened dark chocolate. As a coffee lover, this smells amazing, almost like cold-pressed coffee.

First sip is quite potent, with a astringent coffee flavor smacking the taste buds up front. That gives way to a hit of sweet cocoa flavor, but not much. There is also a long lingering bitterness on the tongue. Beer is quite viscous, and the 10% ABV is reasonably well hidden.

This is a very interesting, unique beer. I give kudos to Sixpoint for pushing the envelope yet again. That said, I feel this is a touch too bitter and unbalanced toward the coffee side to be truly great. At the current price point of $13+ for a 4 pack, I'll be passing in the future.

12oz can with no freshness date. Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours very dark brown with 3 fingers of a khaki colored head. Good retention and lacing. Body is dark but not opaque. When held up to light, color is a dark amber with lots of visible carbonation streaming throughout.

Smell: Coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate, roasted malt, earth. The aroma is nice, just not very strong.

Taste: Follows the aroma pretty closely. Coffee, roasted malt, earthiness, vanilla. Malt sweetness upfront is balanced by a strong coffee bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Fuller end of medium bodied with medium carbonation. Lingering coffee bitterness.

Overall: Pretty good, but not mind blowing. If you're a fan of porters or coffee stouts, it's definitely worth a try.

Poured from a can into a tulip.

A - A semi-clear brown. Somewhat thick full head that filled the top quarter of the glass. Must admit I was a bit impressed by the cream colored foam that awaited.

S - Aroma was of a mild coffee. Not much more to me, but still nice. Kind of what I expected.

T - Right off the bat I got the coffee followed by a mild sweetness. Then came the vanilla. A modest cream flavor that was a pleasant surprise. Not too sweet. Really enjoyed mild and easy to drink.

M - Crisp and delightful. Not too heavy. I guess I could have hoped for a bit more but was not disappointed.

O - A fine brew from Sixpoint. One I would enjoy when looking for an easy to drink coffee brew. I was expecting a bit more coffee to it, but a solid drinker none the less.

A- Pours slightly off-black, which is about the only way to tell it apart from a stout. Dark, dark brown to black body with a medium to large tan head. Retention is awesome and so is the lacing.

S- Complex blend of chocolate and coffee, but more chocolate in the scent. Blend provides a chocolate malt-like (like a chocolate shake) scent. Only slight hints of other dark malts peek in, but this is a mostly sweet smelling beer.

T- Opposite of the smell, with coffee taking the predominant role right off the bat. Mildly bitter coffee is followed by a little more bitterness from roasted malts. The chocolate makes a slight appearance in the flavor towards the end, adding some decent sweetness. Ends with a lingering coffee bitterness.

M- Light and moderately carbonated. Body is much lighter than anticipated based on pour and alcohol content. Alcohol is disguised in the taste, but a little of it can be felt after a sip or two. Fairly drinkable for the ABV.

Overall, I'm a little disappointed given all of the hype around this beer. To me it seemed like this beer was highly sought after, but in high supply. Not a bad beer. It's a good coffee and chocolate blend in a solid dark beer, but nothing special.

Bottom of the can stamped: Best by July 10, 2013:

Into a nonic:

A: dark brown/almost black body, three finger white foamy head rises and falls leaving some speckled foamy spider web lacing and is fairly clingy

S: dark coffee up front, slight chocolate in the background

T: sweet and bitter at different time through the coffee and chocolate, sticky bitter aftertaste and finishes slightly dry

M: light to medium, fairly sessionable despite where the ABV is, carbonation seems just right to me and for the style

A- Almost fully opaque dark brown. When held up to the light it has a cola color. Huge head and long retention with lots of lacing.

S- Cold out of the fridge it has a chocolate liqueur smell or a sort've mousse smell to it. As it warms the coffee comes out a bit but it's faint and you have to put your nose in there.

T- When cold out of the can, the taste is quite different. Similar to the smell it's liqueur like. Also like the smell, the coffee really starts to come out as it warms. It's definitely better as it warms but the transition is interesting. Finishes with a astringent salty taste. The bitterness covers up the 9% alcohol well. Can't really taste any of the oak that it was apparently aged on.

M- About right for the style, if a bit thin. Somewhere between thin and medium.

O- Not what I was expecting but it grew on me as I drank it. I've been to the brewery so drinking these always remind me of my trip.

12oz can, best by 10 July 2013, poured into a Bell's snifter and quaffed today 4/15/2013. Courtesy of Mgm54.

Aroma: When I open this, I actually don't smell much besides an oxidized, metallic smell. I figure it's from the can. After the beer gets to warm up a bit, I can smell some faintly sweet molasses, the bitterness of pressed black coffee and the cocoa bitterness as well. It's not particularly strong but it is there. Fairly typical, but pleasing, of a decent baltic porter. (3)

Colour: Pours a very dark brown, cola coloured body with a 2cm beige/khaki coloured head that dissipates into a thin film on the surface of the beer, accompanied by a thin collar. The lacing is decent and gets to be sticky in the spots it does show up in. Not a bad looking beer by any means. (4)

Flavour: At first, it tastes great, like a chocolate coffee porter almost. There's the stringent coffee bitterness that I've come to know and love from my favorite coffee beers. Then there's some bitter dark chocolate flavours along with some malt roastiness that screams "This is absolutely a damn porter!". However, as the beer warms up, you can really taste the heat beyond what you'd expect from even a 10% ABV brew. It's like it was spiked with a shot of Absolut vodka. So honestly, it starts out great but the excess heat really messes up the early delicate balance that made this beer so promising. I'm not getting any oak at all here either. (3)

Mouthfeel: It's good, a thinner medium bodied porter with excellent carbonation. The beer is a bit creamy and coats the tongue. Unfortunately what its coating the tongue with is vodka-like heat along with the roasted malt. The finish is mainly malt roast and heat, and runs with quite a bit of dryness. I'm not a fan of this, but in terms of mouthfeel, it does a good job of communicating the flavour characteristics well. (4)

Overall: I think the booziness of this beer really comes and undoes all the other good stuff that Sixpoint did with this brew. It makes me wonder if they dumped sugar into the brew to get their OG up, as it tastes rather dry and boozy. It'd be a decent baltic porter otherwise, but I really can't bring myself to really enjoy this beer, even though I'll probably continue on and finish this one. (3)

Consumed 4/13/13

Appearance: Dark brown with some medium brown clarity around the edges - small but robust light tan head - fades to a nice little cap, leaves some spotty lacing

Smell: Coffee and chocolate, with some bigger malts than expected - roasty, lightly burnt and acidic coffee - some nice chocolate notes, with some interesting cocoa, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate notes - there is some oak in here, but it's nicely subtle

Taste: Good, but not as intriguing as the smell - acidic, oxidized coffee, not particularly tasty (I would say that I let this sit too long, but a couple of months for an oak-aged Baltic Porter should be reasonable) - lightly burnt, roasty - acidity from the coffee combines with the acidity from the oak, which is not good, but not exactly bad - some nice woody notes - the highlight here is the chocolate - there are some good milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and cocoa notes - some chocolate malts, caramelized malts, decent base - alcohol is decently hidden

Mouthfeel: On the heavy side of medium, lightly acidic, some dry alcohol in the aftertaste

Overall: This is unexpectedly different than my chili made with 5Beans

Apparently I like to buy new Sixpoint beers because I like complaining. This was almost very good. The aroma is solid, and the chocolate notes are great. Unfortunately, the coffee combined with the oak aging doesn't quite work here. Still worth a try.

$4 for the single 12oz can. Poured into a mini snifter.
Sampled 13APR13

[A] A finger and a half of light brown head foams up quickly on the pour. Deflates a minute later but leaves a thick, sporadic collar and film. Sea foam-like lace smatters the glass. Dark chestnut brown body with ruby tints. Not far from black but the impressive clarity lets a lot of color come through.

[S] Strong aromas of coffee and chocolate front and center. Super sharp notes of alcohol right behind with pronounced fruity esters. Slightly medicinal phenols. Toasted grain and caramel. The nose has a lot of the right notes but it is so alcoholic-ly strong that it is damn near offensive.

[T] Roasted flavors, nearly burnt and a little acrid.Sharp, fruity alcohol. Lacks the traditional smooth character. More ale-like than lager-like in my opinion. A hint of licorice pokes through on the finish.

[M] The mouthfeel is a touch too aggressive. First of all, the alcohol has way too strong of an influence. There is a carbonic bite pricks the tongue just a bit too much. Both of those sensations leave no room for the smoothness that I look for in a Baltic Porter.

[O] Too.Darn.Big. I think 3Beans could be a decent beer if the alcohol was a lot less obvious. Perhaps some aging, a longer lagering (or even a lager yeast instead of ale?) would go a long way too.

Appearance: black in color, opaque, 1 inch head, moderate carbonation

Smell: cream, toffee, and coffee

Taste: caramel, charred roasted malt, black coffee, and cream at the end

Mouthfeel: rich, bitter with slight sweetness at the end, medium-heavy body, moderate carbonation

Overall: For a domestic Baltic porter, this is not bad. This has got a lot of the black coffee taste that I was expecting. This beer is rich and solid and a must for a coffee drinker. That said, I prefer my tea and while I am happy to have one, I think the four pack would be a bit much for me.
