Sixpoint 3BEANS
12 0z. can, "BEST BEFORE 10 JULY 2013 0808OK+"
$4.95 @ The Beer Shoppe, Ardmore, PA on 02/22/2013
An interesting beer to be sure. What were the beans used? Coffee? Yes. Cocoa? Yes. And the Romano bean... ? I've never heard of it. But I looked it up and they're kind of like green beans. And I think that's interesting in itself, that brewers used to use beans as an adjunct, an that Sixpoint's done it in modern times. (I'm assuming they've just used the seeds, and not the whole bean).
Onward, it's a pretty immense beer. It's black-brown in color with a creamy head of tan that holds well and leaves sheets of craggy, spotty lace along the glass. Nice.
It smells of coffee for sure. Dark, rich, roasty and acidic black coffee like espresso. In fact, in tasting it, it leaves the flavor of a chocolate coated espresso bean behind. So, yes, there's chocolate as well. Intense, dark and mainly bitter chocolate. You smell them both upfront, and then you taste them both as well. The only thing missing is the Romano bean, but I'm guessing that might be adding to it's body, which is a little bit beyond medium-full. And in fact it might be fuller, but I think some of the 10% abv. cuts through that. Some alcohol is found in the flavor and aroma as well, but it's not really brash, and it just adds a bit of a raspy edge to the taste. And on that note, there's a little bit of yeasty fruitiness, and a vanilla note and some oaky woodiness to it as well. Did they age this in oak? Or is that just the dryness of the alcohol combining with the coffee acidity to give the impression of woody dryness?
So, overall, an interesting beer. It doesn't quite live up to the hype of the concept, but it is a pretty solid chocolate and coffee strong ale. Worth trying.

Can found in the back of the fridge (dated 2017!) into pint glass. Pours a deep browmn with a couple of fingers of medium-tan head. Great lacing. Initial impression is heavily weighted toward the chocolate end of the spectrum. Bourbon is more of a hint; no evidence of coffee. Very smooth and mellow for 10%. Finish is more cocoa and ever so slightly bitter. Delicious!

Nothing wrong with this beer.
Smooth, dark roasted flavor with just a hint of sweetness and the appropriate level of bitterness. Solid all the way through. Ill be seeking out the BA version of this, wish me luck.

12 oz tall can into a Tervis pint (from Dec. 2018 notes).
The brown-black body is opaque in the glass and topped by a large, bubbly, semi-durable beige head.
Bourbon barrel notes dominate the aroma. The flavors brings more dark roasted grain and coffee. There would probably be more coffee presence if this was fresher. Despite some aging, the high ABV was still obvious.

Cola-black body with deep, dark brown around the edges. Small, light khaki head of tiny, creamy bubbles. Minimal lacing.
Baker's chocolate, espresso, licorice, vanilla, charred and damp wood, toffee, fig newtons, dried cherries, maple, roasted malts. Outstanding.
Maple, chocolate-covered fruits, vanilla, fig, light licorice and char, caramel, dark roast coffee, plus some earthy and bitter hops on the end. Sounds very sweet given the flavor highlights, but the residual sweetness is actually quite low. Well done.
Feel is a touch thin with surprising carbonation, but velvety smooth. Very little booze or heat.
For a porter, this is exceptional. Even for a BA stout it's outstanding.

12oz can served in a little wine glass. Best by November 2020. Picked it up at Captain's in Port Charlotte, FL.
Pours black with a small head, medium to low carbonation. Smell is roasty, with some wood and vanilla. Smells boozy.
Taste is moderately similar -- booze is strong, wood is strong, clearly roasty but not as up front as in the aroma.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, surprisingly effervescent. Overall, pretty good.

Dark brown in color with little penetration to light. There’s a fingernail of brown on top. Light lacing. The aroma is of chocolate and sweet bourbon. I’m tasting chocolate, sweet bourbon, coffee, and vanilla. The mouth is thick and sticky.
