Autumnation opens to a bright, citrusy, hoppy nose that brings heavy doses of grapefruit rind, pink grapefruit, pine resin, and lemon, with supporting hoppy aromas of dandelion stem, mint, and anise. These are countered by a good range of sugars, including orange, apricot, and berry fruit esters, caramel, and brown sugar. And all of this rests atop a bed of toast crust and Grape Nuts cereal, though the grains are largely overwhelmed here and are somewhat difficult to pick out. Hops are the primary aroma, occupying a good three-quarters of the profile, making the beer smell very much like an IPA. As a whole, the nose is very nice, but what is immediately noticeable is the utter lack of pumpkin or spice aromas in here; indeed, if this were handed to me in a blind test, I would think this simply another IPA. What results is still enticing, and features an excellent hop array, but doesn’t mesh up with what the can advertises.

On the tongue, the first notes are hops, but these are milder here than they were on the nose. They still bring good amounts of pink grapefruit, grapefruit rind, pine resin, and lemon, however, with mint, anise, and dandelion stem coming in second. The sugars and grains seem better balanced on the tongue, with orange, apricot, and berry fruit esters mixing with caramel and brown sugar, and the grains again bringing toast crust and Grape Nuts cereal, as well as biscuit and toasted pecan. However, the pumpkin is still missing. There is a good touch of spice in here, but it does not come off as pumpkin spice—instead, it resembles a black and white pepper mixture, with perhaps subtle hints of coriander. The pumpkin is mainly noticeable in the aftertaste, where it brings about a slightly oily and very faint pumpkin flavor that coats the tongue, but is largely overshadowed by the still-exuberant hops, which continue to bang away at the tastebuds in lemony, grapefruity, piney goodness for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium.

As a whole, there is a lot to like about this beer, and hopheads will especially find the hop palette pleasantly diverse and potent. However, as an autumn beer supposedly brewed with pumpkin and spice, the beer does fall short, as neither of those flavors are immediately detectable. Even knowing that the beer contains pumpkin, I was barely able to find any, and that was largely because of the aftertaste.

Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter. Bottom of can says Best Before 30DEC2012. We'll see about that.

A- Pours a hazy orangeish copper color with a 3/4 inch light tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and various patches of surface foam. Non-resilient wispy lacing leaves behind frost-like foam sticking to the glass.

S- Crisp, clean hop nose upfront with some vegetal-type pumpkin aroma in the background. The combination leads to a sort of plastic smell that I'm not sure is a good or bad thing.

T- Yeah, the hops definitely overpower the pumpkin almost to the point that one wouldn't know there was pumpkin at all if it didn't say so on the can. And the hops that are there are metallic, sharp and not so pleasant. Slight lingering bitterness. Still, all these odd flavors somehow don't detract from the drinkability strangely enough.

M- Pretty thin for a pumpkin beer. Also a bit dry. Medium carbonation.

O- OK, so maybe they were right to set the best before date where they did, but something tells me the extra month or so it was sitting didn't change it that much, especially since it was in a can. Either way, I'm glad I only bought one can of this.

Appearance: A nice amber-leaning orange with bright highlights. Head is decent and mildly-foamy, and lacing is pretty spectacular

Scent: Pumpkin seeds, vegetal qualities, tangerine, melon, light pine, crackery/biscuit-y malt; bright and interesting

Taste: Medium-roasted malt with some deeper, squash-like aspects backing it up; yams in the middle, tropical fruit and spicy, dry ginger in the finish. Weird but good

Mouthfeel: Very flavorful with a lot of things going on; extremely complex and busy… full-bodied but refreshing

Drinkability: I think this is a one-per-session beer but only because it’s so weird; it’s an interesting drink that forces you to ponder what “pumpkin beer” is, for better or worse

Overall: I enjoyed drinking this beer, and it's definitely something to ponder and discuss with others who are privy to enjoying it, but I'm not wholly convinced by the recipe nor by the hybridization they were going for. Still, SP typically crafts cool brews and I am helpless to admit that this was "cool" and different.

I don't care where this beer is made, it's a fine effort and worth repeating. Nice depth with a lingering finish, this beer has the gourd backing, without ridiculous spices (as in the Steg) Pumpkin), and well thought out hops layering. Pity the Lion can't make this stuff on its own.

Late Jan 2013 spinrsx, it’s wonderful when the good stuff back eddies into your neck of the woods, isn’t it. Luckily, I only had to stagger downstairs for my last can of this year’s exceptional brew. Golden and frothy headed, this beer marked a turn for me; and now, in the coldest nape of winter, still points toward a more lush future. Possessing great balance, I think the hop zestiness remains more than adequate for the job. One of the BEST products ever to come out of Wilkes-Barre, the Autumnation only begs the question: why can’t the Lion make something like this on its own? Get jiggy wid it !

Can from Wegman's Dewitt NY for 3$

Appearance - Clear copper colour with an average size fizzy/frothy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, oranges, caramel

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel and malts mixed with hops. There is also some oranges and a light amount of all-spice. It ends with a malty sweet aftertaste with a bit of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall – Not really what I was expecting, but a decent brew. I don't get a harvest beer sensation when I'm drinking it, but that taste is nice and well balanced. Probably wouldn't buy again because there are more exciting options.

A fluffy ochre head reaches one inch before dropping to a thin coating that lasts throughout the session leaving sticky rings of lace over a hazy, rustic orange, amber beer with tiny streaming carbonation.

Hop-forward with pinesap and light orange aromas, followed by barely detectible nutmeg and ginger.

Earthy and quite bitter, with flavors that build in waves. Grapefruit and ginger are followed by cinnamon and light pumpkin that come out with warmth. The finish is long and lingering with bitterness throughout.

Medium body with a cottony texture and ample, prickling, fine carbonation. This is slightly metallic and palate coating.

While clearly intended to be a pumpkin ale, based on the pumpkin image on the can and the paragraph to this point, this otherwise seems to have no intention of being typical. While other pumpkin beers oscillate between pumpkin and pie spice, this one strays afield to provide a welcome alternative. Autumnation is very much a harvest style beer, more a hybrid between styles.

Chilled 16 oz can into a stemless tulip pint. No visible canning date.

Look- Clear orange-amber with three fingers of whipped pearlescent head that refuses to settle. Good lacing.

Smell- Nutty, background roasted character with significant bright citric/floral hop aroma with some earthy undertones. light sweetness, light spice (mace? ginger?), roasted pumpkin is notable but mild.

Taste- Similar to the nose, but a little plainer. Well-hopped for a pumpkin ale, earthy. nutty malt flavors and light spice. Herbal, tealike aftertaste with a tannic quality. As it warms, it lightens and the sharper edges round out to reveal a nicer toasty pumpkin flavor.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, light carbonation. Juicy feel with a bit of mineral character and a powdery feel (from the wet hops? spices?) One can's enough for me.

Overall- Serve this one at room temp or just under. Distinctly Sixpoint, and a unique take on the pumpkin ale category. I probably wouldn't choose this over more traditional pumpkin ales or other Sixpoint offerings, however.

I've been eager to try this one for a while, but couldn't bring myself to get a 4-pk or case... Finally found a single yesterday...

A - Slightly more than a finger's worth of fairly standard light khaki colored head comprised of medium sized bubbles and a waffled batter like top... Better than average retention for the style leaves a full rich lacing... A decent bit of medium bubbled carbonation that swirls to the top with a sluggish to moderate pacing... The color is a very pale golden amber... Loads of lacing clings to the sides of the glass....

S - Unlike other Pumpkin Ales, the hops take center stage... While unexpected the hop forward aroma is quite pleasant... A bunch of complex secondary notes are buried further down... Sweet potatoes... Caramel... Bread crust... Biscuit... Just a touch of brown sugar...

T - Like chewing on fresh hop cones... The hops dominate more on the palate than they did on the nose... The gourd flavor is buried way beneath the surface and is a bit difficult to detect... The bready malt base is rather subdued as well... The fresh hop presence lingers on the finish for quite a bit...

M -Medium bodied... Clean... Crisp... Straight forward... Brisk carbonation... A slightly bit oily...

D - An interesting concept, but my fears of mixing pumpkin and hop successfully seem to have come true... The flavor profile never really melds well and actually seem to conflict one another... Not a bad beer and rather still drinkable, but neither a memorable pumpkin nor hop experience... The end result is something that I'm likely not to recommend nor seek out in the future... However, I still love most of what Sixpoint puts out and I commend their efforts here...

16 ounce can into imperial pint glass, best before 12/30/2012. Pours hazy orange copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, caramel, orange zest, pine, floral, toast, bread, citrus rind, herbal, and earthy spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and hop complexity. Taste of grapefruit, caramel, toast, biscuit, orange rind, pine, pepper, clove, floral, light nuttiness, herbal, and earthy spiciness. Good amount of spicy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, caramel, orange rind, bread, toast, pepper, floral, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance of flavors with a good sweetness/bitterness balance; minimal cloying flavors noticed after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice holiday spiced wet hop IPA. Nice hop complexity with good malt and spiciness balance; very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

A single CAN into a 16oz Hulmeville Inn/Sixpoint pint glass.

Autumnation pours into the glass a semi hazy burnt orange with some bronze tints mimicking a sunset. The foam was tan/gold in color with an inch but died leaving no lace.

Smell is pretty standard pumpkin ale fare and kinda muted in scent. Pumpkin spice with some nutmeg and cinnamon. Hops are not present, a standard back malting.

This is what I expected, some subtle spice with some pumpkin flavor in the back. The taste is not all that large, it's not pumpkin pie, but nutmeg over cinnamon with a grassy aftertaste that's light. It comes and goes like that.

Pretty light bodied, may be the lightest of the style to date for me. Thin with light carb. The aftertaste is non existent, spice, malt, nothing. No legs.

This is pretty decent stuff. Not being a huge fan of the style I find this easy as pie to take down. 6.8% is a bit big and right for the flavor involved. I would like to find a happy medium between this and pumKING in both taste and ABV as I have not yet found a favorite Pumpkin brew.

Pint can poured into a large snifter.

A: Pours an orange amber color, fairly see through. Very little head to speak of, and minimal lacing. Well carbonated.

S: If I'm basing the smell off of what its listed as, pumpkin ale, it falls short. If I were to base it on an IPA, its pretty solid and fairly different. I decided to try and do this review down the middle of the road. Trying my best to keep both styles in mind.

T: Run into the same dilemma here. As a pumpkin ale, it fails to deliver. Not getting that much pumpkin flavor at all actually. That doesn't mean the beer isn't tasty however. As an IPA its fairly solid. Again I'm going to have to combine the scores here into middle of the road score.

M: Lot of action from the carbonation, sweet, lighter bodied. Sticky residue that lingers.

O: If comparing this to other pumpkin beers, it falls short. When reviewing it as a stand alone beer however, its really quite good. I thoroughly enjoyed the beer, and would buy it again. Just keep in mind, you want a traditional pumpkin beer, this isn't the beer you're looking for.

Hoppy pumpkin ale, you say? And on sale? And still with plenty of time before the expiry date arrives? Sign me up!

Pours like a regular ol' pumpkin ale, smells like hops with a light dose of toffee and ginger. Not much in the way of your run of the mill pumpkin ale flavors, but then again those are usually pumpkin pie spices, not actual pumpkin so I can't really complain. What's there is nice, even if it's not quite what I was expecting.

Tastes pretty much the same as it smells: pine hops up front, moving in to ginger, toffee, and a little bit of butternut sqaushiness backed up with very light pumpkin pie spice. It's a neat combination with plenty going on. Doesn't gel together completely perfectly, as the heavy hops kind of blot out the back end complexities, but it's nice, interesting, and plenty drinkable.

My sister had these in her fridge and offered them to us during the football games before Thanksgiving dinner. Totally new brewery to me, so glad to get the free samples. 16oz cans with a best before date on the bottom of the can. Mine says "best before Dec. 30, 2012", so it's within the reccomended drinking period.

The beer poured a hazy light orange color with a gigantic 4-finger rocky white head. Retention was good and lacing was plentiful. No complaints in the looks department.

Big citrus hop smell ... but where's the pumpkin, or at least give me some of the pumpkin spices. Not a trace of cinnamon, nutmeg, or clove to be found. It's not an unpleasant smell, just not a pumpkin ale smell.

This would taste OK if it were a pale ale, but not a good taste for a pumpkin ale. If a beer is going to call itself a pumpkin ale then it ought to taste like pumpkin - and this does not even come close. This is a very tasty hoppy brew with the citra hops dominating the flavor. I get lots of grapefruit, orange peel, and tangerine flavor along with some sweet malt for balance. It's also spiced with ginger. Bitterness is high with 74 IBU's, and some of the 6.7% alcohol is noticeable in the background.

Light to medium body with medium carbonation. Some nice bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.

This is a good tasting beer, but I'm knocking it down in score for its failure to taste like what it's supposed to be. As a pumpkin ale it fails miserably.

This is an interesting beer. I thought it was going to be pumpkin smash....but it was not. Quite bitter in fact....bitter as grapefruit. The appearance is very good. Cleasr copper orange with think frothy white head that is lacing lke a Vicky Secrets catalog. The smell has a lot of hop to it nice and fresh. The taste is bitter with sweet malts trying to balance the beer. There was a slight metallic twang to this as well. The first taste was bullied by alcohol....the second on was a bit more balanced and drinkable. Themouthfeel is medium with smooth carbonation. Overall it reminds me of Havest Ale from Goose Island...but not as good. However....I am gld to try this beer and would drink it again.

Wow! What a great American IPA. I love this beer.

The scent is amazing. Pine. Citrus. Grapefruit. Very potent. I want an air freshener in my house that smells like this. Fantastic.

Great head and lacing.

I don't really taste pumpkin, but I don't care. This is great beer. Similar to Sierra Nevada Fresh Hop Ale, but more hoppy and less malty. Truly a special beer. I love the 16 oz can.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Bustin' some John Donne fire on the can, oh yeah! This stuff pours a clear sunset amber topped by a finger of dusty off-white foam. The nose comprises maple syrup, very light leek, grapefruit peel, toasted pumpkin seeds, light caramel, and a hint of pumpkin shell. The taste sees a return of all of these elements, but they've split into their apparent respective camps: IPA (or fresh hop beer) and pumpkin ale. The two factions unfortunately do not cooperate fully, but instead clash at several opportunities. Suffice it to say things just don't mesh properly, but luckily the result isn't an utter and complete trainwreck, which, I feel, it could easily have become. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, an interesting beer, but one that just didn't come together very well for me.

A- An almost clear (hop haze) orange amber, with a fluffy three fingers of off white head. Excellent lacing down the glass.

S- Piney hops and sweet malt. Hard to pick out the pumpkin over the abundance of hops. Has a distinctive Sixpoint smell.

T- A orange/citric hop note, and big bitterness open things up. Transitions into a sweet malt, and (the prior reviewer nailed it) pumpkin flesh taste. Ends with a piney/earthy hop bitterness.

M- I love the mouthfeel of this beer, the pumpkin really adds to the creaminess, and slick, slightly medium to full mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

O- A very interesting take on a pumpkin beer. Certainly will have it again.

Reviewed from notes from 10/29/12.

A- Pours a beautiful orange/amber with a billowing white head with excellent retention and lacing.

S- Strong floral aromas make the fresh (wet) hops obvious. You can smell a sweet/bready malt backbone, and a hint of citrus, spice and pumpkin.

T- The malts and spice are there to start, but quickly give way to the bountiful floral and piney hops, which are sweet at first, but finish with a good bit of dry bitterness.

M- Mouthfeel is light to medium with decent carbonation.

O- A great fall beer! If this were billed just as a harvest beer/fall beer I think it would be more well received. I would expect more spice and pumpkin from a pumpkin beer, but that doesn't mean this isn't a delicious beer!

A- pours a bright golden orange color... big white head, stays around for a few sips. Spider web lacing down the glass... attractive

S- hop resin, pine sap... sweet malty lingering

A - Pours a beautiful ruby red with an orangey tinge. a tightly pack two fingers worth of off-white foam. Dissipates rather quickly and leaves a film of tiny spots of lacing on the glass.

S - Nose is bright, sweet and hoppy. Orange peel and tangerine pulp citrus notes are at the forefront. Ginger spice notes add a layer of sweetness to the citrus fruits. Leafy green notes, slightly resinous and piney round out the aroma.

T - slightly sweet, toasty, and just a bit pumpkin-y (maybe). leafy and resinous in the center. Plenty of citrus fruit juiciness as well. Bitterness linger on well past the finish.

M - medium nearing full bodied. incredibly smooth texture. medium carbonation.

O - Excellent take on the fresh hop ale. pumpkin must be what lends the luxurious mouthfeel and the ginger adds lovely depth to the hop character.

Served on tap in a tulip

Pours a very slightly hazy orange color with a small white head. The beer itself drinks like a hop forward pale ale. The hop profile is nice and citrusy, a lot of orange and peaces. The beer has a good feel to it, thick but smooth and not too overwhelming. There is a nice nutmeg and cinnamon spice to this beer but it's not too noticable until the beer starts to warm up. This beer is half pumpkin ale and half fresh hop ale. Easy drinking and very tasty stuff.

16 oz can poured into a DFH snifter.

Pours a brownish orange color with a finger of sticky, resiny foam. Aroma is extremely hoppy, fully of citrus hop flavor. Reading on Sixpoint's website, I see this beer is wet-hopped with Citra hops this year, and it certainly comes through.

First sip is is malty hop bomb. Tons of hop flavor. This tastes like a brown IPA to me, the pumpkin doesn't come through to me at all, but this is a good thing. Nice viscosity adds mouthfeel but any accompanying sweetness is overwhelmed by hop flavor.

Sixpoint does an amazing job of pushing style envelopes. This beer is totally unique, and being a hophead, I totally dig it. I didn't even realize this beer had pumpkin in it until I went to review the last of the 4-pack here.

Holy Citra HOPS, Batman!

Aroma: complex hop aroma with a sweet malt reminiscent of caramel and toast. Citra hops galore- smells straight off the vine.
Appearance: Transparent autumnal amber with visible carbonation and thick creamy off white head.
Taste: Pine & citrus hops. Perfectly bitter hop taste balanced with a mild sweetness from the malt.
Mouthfeel: an enjoyable viscosity. Medium in body and nice amount of carbonation- definitely makes the flavors dance.

This was a nice break from all the overly spiced-pumpkin/ seasonal beers- Really enjoyable to get other tastes from the season (the fresh hops).

16 oz can into a tulip glass. Best Before December 30, 2012.

A - Pours a clear light brown body with a fluffy two finger white head. Very dense and thick with great lacing ad retention.

S - Piney and resinous hops, light spice, caramel malts.

T - Piney and oily hops lead into smooth caramel malt. Light spice presence with a slight mineral finish and lasting bitterness. Pumpkins? Nope. Mouth feel is slickand medium bodied.

O - A confusing but tasty beer. Somewhere in between a wet hopped ale and a spiced autumn beer, this one oddly works.

Hoping for a beer that’s perfect for the season; I’m sure Sixpoint can deliver.

A: Frothy, finger-high tan head over a golden-amber body, reminiscent of fall foliage. A thin layer of lacing circles around the inside of the glass as the head recedes to a mere dusting.

S: Roasted barley and caramel malt show off spiced breads, toffee, toast, and anise. Pretty loaded with hops, too, showing tart aromas of green apple, pine, and oily residues; pretty big spiciness, teeming with additional notes of pumpkin, nutmeg, and allspice. Basically a hoppy amber ale with a little spice.

T: Bitter, rindy hops give pine, lime rind, and herbal intensity upon first sip – fiery cinnamon and ginger come in soon after. There’s a good bready tone, spiced like pumpernickel, with blackened toast tastes over vanilla doughiness. This really is a light beer, with a pale, hoppy character overall. Aftertaste is a puckering astringency, settling with toasted bread and dark spice in moderate intensity.

M: Has the canned beer character that I’ve always known: smooth, creamy bubbles in a thin body. It’s consistent for the brewery, and it works here.

O: If you like fall beers but aren’t ready to give up your summer hops, here’s your beer: no huge malt thickness, but enough grain presence to keep this more than just a dark-malted pale ale. This is autumn in genuine Sixpoint fashion.
