Enjoyed this stout in downtown Austin outside on a patio deck in beautiful weather. Might bias me in favor of this beer. :)

Appearance - Extremely dark opaque; continuous, white/tan head; about two fingers of head initially.

Smell - Very hard to place; can't smell much; slightly citrus-like and hoppy.

Taste - Very hoppy for a stout; diesel-like hoppiness; strong aftertaste; bitter chocolate/malt taste; burnt; roasted; hoppy.

Mouthfeel - Bitter but still relatively comfortable on the palate; sharp aftertaste after hops.

Overall - A little too much hops for a stout (in my personal opinion) but still tasty; probably wouldn't seek this beer out again but I still appreciate what it is.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Very, very dark brown/black with highly-retentive yet slightly small head, even with a full pour. Lacing is excellently-tiered

Scent: Chocolate malt, blackened coffee beans, astringent pine hops, light spruce bark, bitter and resinous, some orange and various citrus here and there

Taste: Incessant in its delivery of roasted and charred malts supported by a complex and varied hop profile. Satisfying, to say the least

Mouthfeel: Fairly full-bodied but can seem watery and even too hoppy, especially when it’s colder so I’d let this sit after a long refrigerated period

Drinkability: Excellent; the dry-hop lends some astringency but it’s so well-tempered by the malt bill that it finishes quite smooth

Overall: This should probably be a regular beer for Sixpoint; given their penchant for bucking trends, perhaps it should seek to be released in the Spring months to change up styles a bit? Regardless, this is a very tasty beer that features SP's pension for disregarding style rules in favor of brewing excellence.

tallboy can poured into a beer stein.

best before date on the bottle of the tallboy stating: May 2013.

Appearance: Black bodied beer with 3 fingers of thick light brown colored head. It looks exactly like the head formed on top of a rootbeer float. Great staying power and thick lacing all over the glass. The head never dies on this beer... a thick cap remains until the glass is empty.

Smell: roasted malt profile. Its fairly hoppy nose that matches and might even over power the malts. Its lots of pine notes with a grapefruit compliment.

Taste: Yeah this beer balances out really nicely. The malts start things off; they are roasty with a hint of sweetness. I would say mild coffee, mild chocolate, and mild molasses notes. A really nice malt profile! The hops are not really bitter for 68 IBU. Pine and grapefruit, but mostly pine. Everything blends together nicely in the finish, with a mildly bitter pine finish that lingers for just the right amount of time.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Creamy and subtle carbonation. Just right for this beer. A nice flavorful yet drinkable stout!

Overall: This beer is very well balanced and flavorful. Not alot of flavors in this beer, but it got everything it needs, trust me. This is probably my new favorite Sixpoint beer to date. Bonus points as always for being craft beer in a can! This beer seems to hover indecisevely between a hoppy american stout and an american black ale. But who cares its a really good beer!

A: A deep cherry red cola color. Imagine a Dr. Pepper that has been concentrated down to be a bit darker. Pours out with one finger of head with decent lacing.

S: A huge smell of piney/resiny hops and some biscuit. A small hint of the darkness from the malt pokes through.

T: Everything seen in the smell backed by roasted malts. A hint of coffee and booze in the background.

M: A mid/heavy body with somewhat light amount of carbonation.

O: For anybody who has tried Sixpoint's Resin DIPA, it is like a lighter version of that with a roasted malt background. Tough to rate because it is so unique. It isn't like traditional stout, but more like a black IPA. Overall, a great beer. Balanced in every way, and the dry hopping is incredible. Plus, Sixpoint cans are really cool.

Poured from a "tallboy" can into a standard pint glass.
Dark brown/black in color, with a big sturdy cap of milk chocolate foam.
Aroma-Dark toasted malt, coffee
Taste-Dark toasted malt, short blast of piney hops, chocolate, roast coffee, citrus rind. Complex flavors held in balance pretty well. Nice character and tasty flavor. An interesting, enjoyable stout.

Another find at Pies & Pints in Middlebury, CT this stout is typically
pitch black with a goodly topping of light tan foam and blanketing lace. As far
as the aroma, I'm sorry to say nothing much comes to mind here, maybe a slight
hint of malt, but this oddly has little to offer. The flavor thankfully undoes
any harm from the nose hit by delivering a smooth but substantial molasses malt
with mild charcoal edges. There's a mild grassy hop that gradually emerges and
becomes a significant part of this stout along with a lavender idea. Eventually
I get some roasted coffee bean bitterness as well. This presents a solidly
medium body with a bit of an aqueous and chalky feel. It's a solid effort but
not at all extraordinary.

Poured into a pit glass. Nice tan head developed which did not last, laced well. Appearance was dark brown, near black. Aroma was sweet with chocolate, caramel notes with a hint of pine. Taste was dry with hop overtones and hints of pine and spice. Aftertaste was piney and dry. Overall a nice beer, liked the pine balance and hoppy taste.

16oz. can poured into a tulip.

(A)- Pours pitch black color. Some superb tan froth formed that stuck around for quite some time. Tons of lacing left behind too.

(S)- A big kick of dry, almost nutty citrus. Behind that are hints of some serious roasted malts.

(T)- A really nice yet mellow roasted malt and nut profile. Finishes dry, but with a fresh burst of bitter citrus.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Great citrus profile combined with the mellow roastedness. Quite smooth actually despite its large hop addition; its more citrus-like than bitter really.

(O)- I like this, its a solid beer. Its not exactly the most "Stout-like" example I have seen, but the hops just are that much forward to almost have this feel and taste more like an American Black Ale / Black IPA to me.

Poured from a 16oz can into a DFH tulip.

Best Before 25MAY2013

A: Pours a beautiful coal black with just a suggestion of deep-dark brown at the edges. Capped by 2 fingers of creamy khaki colored foam that displayed excellent retention to boot. Textbook lacing down the insides of the glass.

S: Heavy roast, bakers chocolate, and espresso tussle mightily with piney hops. A bit of bright berry, as well.

T: A mirror held to the description above. Hugely roasty and hoppy with the berry transitioning over, too. Would've preferred more pine than berry...

M: Covers many bases. Full & pillowy at first and finishes dry & peppery on the tongue.

O: Is this beer for real? A killer stout that doesn't break the bank at $8.99 for a 4-pack.

Serving Type - 16oz Can, says "best before may 2013" on the bottom

A - Black, like the name would suggest. cannot see like passing through. Nice tan head on it

S - You can tell it's a hoppy stout from here. Dark roasted notes, with chocolate hints.

T - big, hoppy stout. The hops cover up the roasted and burnt flavors a bit at the start, but they come out more in the finish. Hints of dark fruits.

M - Creamy, which threw me off a bit with the hops, but still good.

O - Solid stout, something different with the hops involved, I'm not really used to hoppy stouts, but this was a good start. I would buy it again, good pick up.

Great tan head with awesome sticky lacing and a thick layer of foam that hangs around for all sixteen ounces. Color is a black coffee with dark ruby and brown highlights.

Faintly bitter coffee grounds with some chocolate mixed in for balanced measure. Roasty and fresh aroma overall.

Bitter roasted malt and fresh hop flavors combine well from start to finish. Flavors of coffee and a little dark chocolate play well off the almost burnt malt flavors at times.

The body felt a little thin to me. It reminded me of Guiness, but with a little more fullness of course. Other than that, this is a great beer.

A: Very dark brown with good clarity and a deep garnet hue. It pours with two fingers tan head with a good retention period and made of rocky and dense, compact bubbles.

S: It smells awesome, not quiet smell like any other stout having great balance of hops and roasted grains. The hops have moderate aromas of pine and citrus. The grains have a moderate roasty aroma and moderately-low chocolate and coffee smell to them.

T: One tasty Stout here with a lot of roasted grains and a lot of hops. The moderate hops bitterness slightly beats the moderate roasted grains to the taste buds. There is a good roasted coffee bean and bitter chocolate flavor with a moderate citrus hops having a decent amount of pine as well. The balance is bitter mostly from the hops with the bitter dark grains adding just a touch. The finish is fairly dry and the after taste is of bitter chocolate and hops bitterness.

M: A meduim-full body with moderately-strong carbonation and a light creaminess. There is a very slight astringency.

O: A bold American Stout jam packed with hops, roasted grains and a touch of chocolate and coffee. The is a new favorite as far American Stouts.

16 oz can poured into a tulip

A- Pours dark brown and turns black as night in the glass. A two finger of a light brown head.

S- A slight chocolate and roasted malt. A lot of pine and some astringent hoppy tones.

T- A hoppy stout. The first thing I get is a hop bitterness and a bouquet of piney and resinous flavors. The roasted malt in this beer is an after thought to the hops but they provide a solid base to the beer. The beer has some chocolate tones as well as some underlying caramel.

M- A silky smooth beer but it has high carbonation. Bitter for a stout but I don't mind.

O- This is pretty darn good brew. It's uniqueness sets this beer apart but I didn't really expect it. A cross between a stout and a black IPA. A really different brew but a well done one.

Thanks to LambAndTunaPhish for sharing this one.

A-Black in the glass, but a dark transparent brown when poured from the can. Two finger head that leaves little lacing

S-Sweet aroma of chocolate malt that is blend with a little pine hops

T-Doesn't quite follow the nose like one would expect. Roasted barley and bitter chocolate out of the gates that leads into a subtle citrus sweetness with a small piney hop punch at the end. The aftertaste leaves you with an earthy bitterness.

M-Light body, thin mouthfeel with moderate levels of carbonation.

O-Very complex beer for the style with the blend of sweetness and hops into a traditional stout.

After having my first Sixpoint beer, I immediately began the search for this. No matter what I’ve had from them, it’s always been delicious; plus, I’ve never had a canned stout.

Good for months (“BESTBEFORE 25MAY2013” on the bottom of the can).

A: Pours dark brown and fizzy, a blackened beer with quite a shine. An inch of foamy canned-beer head appears for a moment before disappearing completely – save for the thin layer of lacing all the way around.

S: Baking chocolate and sweet baked goods with inflections of herbal vanilla, but with a noticeable hop presence. Smells like a chocolate-covered pine cone. Takes a little while to warm, but when it does, it definitely opens up, getting more full and savory – notes of dark fruit and burnt sugar expand to the edges of the nose.

T: Robust, hoppy, and downright delicious – sweet, bready tastes of biscuit and cake batter lay a smooth foundation for a more intense character of hop bitterness. Roasted malt and a softly bitter cocoa flavor start a quick transition to the hops: lemon rind and pine, that is, prickling in a mildly catty way. Finishes with a dry, wooden profile, letting oak, buttery caramel, and hops cement this as a strong, roast-and-hop stout.

M: Has the canned fizz you’d expect, raising perception of the hop flavors in seconds flat. Medium body for a stout.

O: Who knew an aluminum can could contain such a hardy, world-class stout? It really isn’t complex, sure, but it’s classically enjoyable – a beer that’s flavorful, rich, and affordable, to boot.

Into a nonic:

A: dark brown/black colored body yielding a nice looking lumpy, foamy one inch tan head that lasted for a good two minutes before gently dieing. Some nice spider web lacing is left.

S: malts, coffee, and chocolate up front with some earthy citrus/hoppiness coming in sharp amounts.

T: previously mentioned aromas to make a bittersweet acceptable approach.

M: light to medium with some light harshness on the tongue

O: I like it, but this may be a Black IPA or an American Porter. I'd probably get it again.

Great beer. Plenty of hops, but not overwhelming. The hops are finely balanced with a slightly malty dark chocolate and a little coffee.

Good mouthfeel. It lightly lingers on your tongue, without coating the inside of your mouth. The flavors stick around too. It's slightly dry, but not with a overly dry finish.

Like an IPA combined perfectly with a great dry stout.

Poured from can into tulip glass. Black pour with a single finer beige head that has some pretty big bubbles. Smell is very hoppy, oak, roasty, a bit piney. The mouthfeel is pretty thin, surprising for the color that it is. Pleasantly hoppy, not too many warm stout flavors except a hint of coffee and chocolate on the after taste. I was in the mood for a thick stout, should have consulted the BAs first. Anyways this is a great stout (cough cough, black ipa) and I'm glad I tried it. Love the fact that it come in 16oz cans.

Aroma: Blistering citric hop aroma up front. Notes of orange pith and lemon zest overwhelm the experience. Background chocolate and cocoa notes appear as the beer warms and is agitated.

Appearance: Black center with leather brown edging. Huge rocky and sudsy tan cap. Head retains well.

Flavor: Earthy and slightly citrus hop flavors up front. Background cocoa notes with a touch of milky sweetness. Balance is clearly to the American hop bitterness. Finish is clean, crisp, and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light bodied with high carbonation. A touch of roasted grain astringency. No alcohol heat.

Overall impression: Nowhere near the complexity, mouthfeel, or malt profile to be a stout. More aligned with a Black IPA. A good beer but not an American Stout by any parameters.

Best Before May 25, 2013. 16oz can poured into a pint glass. Pours black with just a little light getting through. There's a huge khaki, off-white head which sticks around and leaves very sticky lacing. Really nice looking beer. The aromas are very nice and reminiscent of a Black IPA. Very hoppy with lots of pine resin and oranges. The chocolate malts are very present in the nose as well. The flavors are fine, but a bit of a letdown compared to the aromas. Lots of roasted chocolate and expresso. The hop bitterness is there, but it lacks hop flavor. This doesn't exactly remind me of a stout and would fit better in the "Black Ale" category, in my opinion. Mouthfeel is fine, a little thin, but still has a body to it. The carbonation is moderate. This is a very easy drinking beer.

This is definitely in the Black IPA territory. Nice beer that could be so much more. The aromas had me excited, but the flavors seemed average. Not bad.

A - It's hard to catch a whiff from a beer when the darn head wont collapse! This seemingly ever-lasting cap of dense tan foam takes an eternity to plateau, disintegrating away from the edges while leaving immovable, chunky lace above the midnight chocolate brown beer.

S - Robust and forthcoming, Diesel has a powerful aroma of roasted malts and American hops starting with dark chocolate-covered raisin and chocolate-covered coffee bean while trailing off with sharp snap of pine needle and sticky lupulin resin. A wonderful aroma, however hop-forward.

T - Hops overwhelm the malts leading me to question whether I would truly consider this a hoppy stout or go straight to American Black Ale. A waft of smoke settles around notes of burnt toast and dry cocoa with an overarching earthiness of pine cone and pine needle derived from American hops. It's actually rather simple and straight forward!

M - Dry roasted malt provides a gritty background but the beer's medium body has a smooth overall texture that finishes dry and bitter thanks to the plethora of hops. The lack of fullness and focus on hop bitterness further suggests American Black Ale.

O - With each passing sip, I continue to enjoy Diesel but become quickly convinced I'd be hard pressed to try and pass this black hoppy beer off as a stout to any of my stout-loving friends. It's a great beer packed with roasted malt and pine-y American hops but the focus strays from the malt, which merely provides a backbone, to those bold hop additions.

I knew when I saw something new from this brewery that I was in for a treat. Diesel was no disappointment. Without saying what style it was on the can, I figured it would probably be a black ale. Tasting it and seeing what it posted here, I guess I was wrong.

Opening the can reveals a nice slightly roasty aroma, with plenty of malty smell too. The taste is a perfect American bitter stout taste. The aftertaste just builds on that bitterness.

Overall, this is one of the most satisfying stouts I have had in a long time. Another Sixpoint winner!

Thanks go out to Phorestfreak for the can. Stephen.

It pours a really dark brown, small but persistent head of foam, nice lacing.

The smell is kind of weak. Just some roasted malt and some notes of hops.

It tastes of roasted malt, some nice bitter hop notes as per their label...this ale was dry hopped. The hops are more of a supporting role than main event but that's more to my liking anyways.

Good medium body, ditto for the carbonation, good mouthfeel.

I think this is quite the good American Stout at a reasonable abv. Another delicious brew from the crew at Sixpoint.

Btw, I had a more detailed review written but then my laptop went all weird on me before I could post it.

Poured from a Nano Keg into my Brooklyn Brewery ( sorry Sixpoint ) Nonic Pint Glass

Appearance - pours an inky black with a viscosity that screams stout. A very active brownish head that is very active and persists throughout. An active head forms from the bottom of the glass in a typical stout fashion.
Smell - a really, roasty malty, hoppy, aroma. The aroma is very pleasant and peaty, and has an earthy quality. The overall aroma is very rich. This does not scream chocolate, coffee, but does have the richness and undertones of both.

Taste - a Very dark malty, hoppy stout. The taste is malty, and surprises you with a very strong hop profile. The hops kick in and add depth to the stout. A creaminess is interrupted with the hop kick.

Mouthfeel - a very carbonated, yet smooth stout. This is not a creamy milk stout, but a tightly carbonated stout that exerts creaminess, but still bites the back of the palette

Overall - this is one of the truly great American Stouts. it has a great hop profile, that sets this apart from other stouts. The body is rich, creamy but with a hoppy bite. If you like stouts, try it, if you like hops try it. A great combination of a rich, malty stout with an exciting hoppiness.
