Had on tap at Korzo, Brooklyn.

Poured into a a liter mug, I'm in for a good time with this baby. A nice stiff finger-depth head on top of a dark chocolate filtered body. Smells wonderfully malty with layers of chocolate, coffee, and other roasted malts in this malt lovers ticket to paradise. The taste matches with a light-moderate body with some carbonation. I did not get bored drinking a liter of this.

A: The beer poured dark brown in color with a thin head that disappeared very quickly.
S: There are light aromas of bready and sweet malts in the nose along with some notes of caramel.
T: Mild flavors of sweet caramel malts stand out in the taste, which also has notes of coffee and nuts. Bitterness from the hops is noticeably absent.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and relatively smooth. There isn't a lot of carbonation.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and sessionable. It also goes very well with food, particularly a burger.

Had this at Il Casale in Belmont, MA, a noisy restaurant with good food and a decent beer list. Mahogany brown, the color of my piano, with some shininess around the edges. Was served with almost no head, so I can't comment on that part of the beer except to growl and say it should have been served with a head, and then go off on my standard tirade about how beer served in pubs and restaurants is usually served without a head and the glass is filled to the FREAKING brim... But I digress.

Very little aroma, but if I pulled hard I could detect a bit of caramel and some smoky beef. Rather thin body, rather thin taste: more caramel and some vanilla, maybe a few raisins. Had a reasonably wet finish, which I like in this style. Went well with a terrific seafood stew. An average brown ale, not great but not bad. You could do worse.

On-tap 3/1/2010 at The Publick House in Brookline, MA, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of maple, caramel, roasted malts and a little bit of hops.

T: The taste is malty but not overly sweet and not too heavy with flavors of maple, caramel and nuts. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this a decent beer to drink for a while but there are better beers in the style that I would pick first.

On-tap at Sixpoint/Jimmy's No. 43 vegetarian beer dinner

A: Pours a dark amber with a one-finger head that fades to nice lace.

S: Roast malt with strong American hop scent.

T: Although a brown ale, this tastes remarkably much like a stout (which is one of my favorite styles). It's of course less creamy, but the roast profile reminds me of Guiness or Beamish.

M: I felt this was a tad too carbonated. I'd love to be able to try this as a cask ale.

D: Very drinkable. In fact, I ordered another pint of it.

Had at RedBones in Somerville 1/20/10

A: This beer pours a deep amber somewhat ruby color with no head.

S: Nose is of caramel and heavy toffee, hint of hazlenut, and toasted malts.

T: Taste is awesome rich caramel up front - true caramel not caramel malts and brown sugar. Toffee, a hint of alochol, and roasted malts on the back end with a bit of fruitiness. Finish is a nice muted floral hop flavoring.

M: Light side of medium body, low carbonation, crisp and clean body.

D: Tasty and goes down remarkably easy. This is one to sit with for an evening.

Appearance: light brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: toasted malt and nut

Taste: toasted malt, big nutty middle, hops towards the end, and caramel throughout

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium carbonation, moderately sweet

Drinkability: This is one of the more complex brown ales I have had. I know there is a flavor in there I cannot put my hand on. The nuttiness is there to match some other sweet flavors. Great brew, wish I could find this in bottles.

On-tap at The Blue Monkey in Merchantville, NJ; served in a pint

Pours a chilled brown with a fluffy, creamy tan head. Excellent retention and loads of lace.

The aroma was subtle but distinct. Fresh baked dark bread, citrus hops, brown sugar and toasted nuts.

Some light orange peel up front with a doughy, chewy bready middle. The finish was of brown sugar and slightly toasted nuts and a touch of smoke. As it warms, I get more and more molasses. Amazingly clean. The flavors are real bright.

Medium body, not overly thick by any means. A hearty flavor profile with adequate carbonation. Pretty damn smooth.

This is an easily sessionable brown ale. Hearty, flavorful and relatively low in abv.

A - Poured dark brown with big head which dissipated very quickly.

I am NOT a fan of brown ales, as I find most of them warrant a fork & knife to be ingested. That being said, this beer blew my mind. Appearance is standard for a brown ale; deep mahogany, with a thin tan head, and fair lacing. The smell yielded notes of roasted malt, coffee, cocoa powder, toffee, and piney hops. The flavor was amazing; first the malty/sweetness hits you, then the hop essence blends in, and then it finishes with a roasted nut flavor that is not overpowering. I even detected the piney hops in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel, in my mind, was the best part...this was a medium-bodied brown ale, that felt adequately carbonated, easy on the palate, and VERY drinkable. The only sessionable brown ale that I've ever come across. I've butted heads with some friends over some of Sixpoint's offerings, but this, the Bengali IPA, and the Apollo Wheat really won me over. I'll try any new beer these guys concoct.

Sixpoint Brownstone pours a very dark brown with a good amount of fluffy off-white head. Considering that this was poured from the tap into a bottle and then from that bottle into my glass its looking pretty good.

Aroma is a boat load of sweet malt. It definitely has a lot of that dark brown bread smell to it along with the smell you get when you open a can of malt extract. There is also some sweet caramel and definitely some dark brown sugar. Its a very "warm" smelling brown ale.

Flavors and aromas are one in the same. There is a ton of sweet caramel and dark brown sugar flavor to this beer. Its a big dose of sweet malt and a bit of hop bitterness that just rounds out the finish to each sip. Very tasty.

Everything I've ever had from Sixpoint has been excellent. If you ever find yourself in NYC, venture down to the Redhook section of Brooklyn and pop into Sixpoint for a tour and a tasting, you won't be sorry.

On tap at The Pony, NYC:

A: Beautiful, dark, hazy brown body with full, thick mocha head with great retention and lacing. Exciting.

S/T: Great nutty coffee with good woody smoked malts, caramel, toffee, and some great toasted bread notes. Hop presence is decent, but not the focus.
M: Full, thick, slightly chewy with a good, extended finish.

D: I've had this a couple of times now, and it never fails to blow my mind. It's full, it's rich, it's complex, it's got everything, and it nonetheless does not overwhelm. Everything is right about this beer.

On-tap at Floyd's in Brooklyn (the home of the indoor Bocce court!).

After a week of beer anemia in the Caribbean (Wadadli and Red Stripe, with my only relief being a single bottle of Guinness Foreign Extra), I was ready to hit up some quality brews as I passed through NYC on my way home. Sixpoint Brownstone not only fit the bill, it made my day.
This is a brown ale to inspire odes. Perfectly balanced, lovely to look at (in a dark or dim room, hold a candle behind the glass -- it shimmers a beautiful red-brown), and a joy to sip.
It flirts with being too sweet, but then a follow-through of hop bitterness saves the day.
It begins sharply on the tongue, but the lingering aftertaste is heavenly -- I believe I stated that I would be loathe to brush my teeth that night, for fear of losing the Brownstone finish in my mouth.
Worth a trip to Brooklyn!

16oz draft pour on 5/28/09, this sat and warmed for 15 min before taking notes.
Semi opaque, rich brown colored brew with ruby highlights, arrived with a 1/2 finger of dirty cream colored head.

The nose on this beer JUMPS at you and easily the best I've ever smelled for the style. Equal parts coffee and dark chocolate up front, backed by a bit of cool wet earth - maybe it's must - and warming allspice. Clean, confident, supreme.

The taste is almost as impressive - starts full and chewy with a dominance of slightly bitter coffee and sweet caramel malt, which are in the right proportions to make my little beer heart melt with affection. A slight hint of chocolate emerges from the caramel, it spreads, and is now a clay like taste, dry and pleasing. It evolves again, revealing itself in the earthen, hoppy finish. Aftertaste is slightly acerbic, woody even, and adds a nice memory of complexity to the beer.

The medium mouthfeel certainly compliments the beer, a good representation of the style, I find it round and soft with its carbonation, and slightly buttery in its finish. For all of that, this beer goes down with a relaxing ease.

Found this on tap at Brendan Behan in JP. Served in a pint glass. Extremely dark brown color. Whispy white head, with decent lacing. Smelled like malt and baker's chocolate. Taste was very appealing. Malt, cocoa, molasses all hit the taste buds. And the body was on the thick side, which I love, because that's the way a good brown ale should be: hearty but drinkable. Very smooth going down. A nice find at a surprising bar.

A: Espresso brown body with hints of mahogany red-brown when held up to the light. Thin off white head. No lacing. Decent retention.

S: Caramel. Coffee. Nuttyness. Bread.

T: Almost porter like. Rich coffee and chocolate dominate over a bready/nutty base. Very little bitterness. Pleasant, if not a bit odd in combination.

M: A bit oily. Lacking in some carbonation. But otherwise smooth in flavor transitions.

D: All things considered... not too shabby. It does lack compared to some of the other Sixpoint brews i've had.

Draught into mug.

Pours dark brown with a small, light tan head.

Aroma is bread crust and a hint of cocoa, roasty.

Taste follows suit - light nutty bread crust, roasty, hint of cocoa, smooth and round with a dry, roasty finish. Really top notch brown ale, could have drank this one all night long.

Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body.

Enjoyed several taps while playing pool in the back of the Brooklyn Social Club. Poured a dark copper hued brwon with a finger of off-white head. Not too much retention, but keep lacing throughout.

Biscuit and malt aroma.

Though there is some good nutty/biscuit maltiness backbone, this one leads with a smack of hops on the front end. Like choco finish with a lingering hop crispness.

Light medium mouthfeel that leads to its drinkability going up. Had 4-5 easily.

Great example of what one would define as an "american brown," being complex enough to have a great mix of both. Would love to have this one available near me.

Much better off tap.

I had this on cask at Stout, right next to MSG in NYC. Very brown with a slight nut scent to it. It was opaque and left a good lace.

To be honest, this was one of the least flavorful cask beers I've had. It had a nut and malt taste to it. Semi creamy but lacks any real kick to it. It left a sour aftertaste.

A - Deep coppery brown; hints of orange around the edges. Thinnish off-white head. Great spiderweb lacing.

S - Sweetish maltiness, with light fresh yeasty bread/biscuity aromas.

T - Great maltiness for the style, with bittersweet chocolate and just a touch of hop bitterness in the finish

M - Thinner MF, but within what would be expected for the style. Not at all watery, and muted carbonation

D - Hugely drinkable, and has made a fine session brew for me on many occasions. Great flavors, but very well balanced really makes this a high score for me.

Overall, this is a fine take on what can be a blander style from other breweries. Maintained a great deal of complexity for the style, and that really makes it stand out. Recommended.

Deep chestnut/mahogany body. Single-finger head is rather ephemeral actually.

Nose predominantly of toffee and a little bit of dried fruits. I'm guessing dates at this point.

Clean-tasting with a good husky dark malt backbone. Hop character is slightly floral - maybe a little pininess in there as well.

Palate feel for this one is quite enjoyable - typically comforting for a brown session ale - nothing breaking out to disrupt balance.

I could enjoy a few of these in a session - strong effort indeed.

A: A dark brown pour with a ruby tint around the edges. Some tan foam sits on top, but doesn't leave much lacing.

S: Lots of earthy hops, some chocolate and coffee are present as well. A very mild and pleasant smell.

T: Lots of roasted chocolate flavor, coffee, mild earthy hop flavor, quite bitter for a brown ale.

M: Well carbonated, crisp, dry, nice and bitter.

D: Awesome brown ale, very sessionable.
