An Imperial Red ale of global proportions, rich with toasted malt and enough bright hops to warm you through the winter.

12oz can that looks as only Sixpoint cans can appear (I for one really dig the Sixpoint aesthetic), courtesy of Shane at Sixpoint. According to the stamp on the bottom of the can, this is best by April 23, 2015.

Poured a dark amber color and clearer than I was expecting. Big, creamy and rocky beige head that took it’s time settling in a Hopworks pint glass, leaving lots of lace.

Big hoppy nose as soon as I popped open the can. At that moment it reminded me for all the world like a Jever Pilsener (that happens to be my favorite of that style, but it wasn’t what I was expecting)! As it warmed a little in my glass, the hoppiness emerged as a little more piney and slightly citrusy than when I opened it, but there was also a slightly herbal, “European” hoppiness to it. While the hops dominate, there’s some bready malt scents as well.

I initially thought this tasted like a “Red IPA” (I’ve had one beer described thus, at Big Time Brewing in Seattle), brewed with just enough malt to make it look like an amber, but with way more hops to be mistaken for anything but an IPA.. Having said that, the hoppiness isn’t smack you over the head with an alpha oil shovel – it’s balanced just at the tipping point between crisply bitter and citrusy. There are some bready, slightly sweet malts, but they are subordinate to the hops. The more I drank this, the hop profile seemed more and more balanced to be just barely the stars of the show while allowing the malts to come out and play just a bit. The finish is dry.

Lighter bodied than I was expecting, perhaps because I thought this would be closer to an amber ale. The mouthfeel is fairly light for a beer of this strength and rather crisp.

A unique take on either a winter ale or an amber ale. While hop forward, it is quite drinkable if you don’t mind a little hop bitterness. It is NOT a malt bomb (like many ambers) or festooned with massively citrusy hops, (like so many brewers are using these days). While it’s abv kinda rules it out as a session beer, the combination of unique but enjoyable flavor and lower impact on the palate makes it way more refreshing than I expected. I wouldn’t mind having several of these, so long as I’m at home or not driving!

"Best by 4/23/15"; drank 11/25/14 @ the Yarchives.

Clear orange/red hue.

Big off-white head; frothy lace.

Mild orange citrus nose; faint hints of bread.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Bitter grapefruit & stake bread flavors up front; mild macro-lager finish.

Drinkable but hardly enjoyable.

Aroma is hops and some spice. Light Amber color, lasting white head. Loses points for being a little too hoppy for a winter beer. Also get pine, sourish resin, tar."

Poured into dimpled seidel.

Look: Thin, cream-colored head ring, and a bat-shape of lace. Burnt amber center, light orange at the edges.

Smell: Fruity hops (grapefruit comes to mind), malt.

Taste: Up front hop fruit, biscuit malt back. Sweet, with tropical bitterness.

Feel: Medium and dry.

A nice red with some great balance. A fruity, hoppy bomb of beer.

Poured from 12oz can into glass. Canning date of '20FEB2017'. Only described as an 'ALE' on the can.
Hazy, red amber body. Frothy white head settles to interrupted head, and moderate lacing.
Smell is tropical and piney hops, biscuit malt.
Spicy taste, mostly of piney hops, some tropical in the middle, strong malt underlying throughout. Sweetness at the end.
Coats the mouth, slightly bitter to smooth.
Touted to be a beer to "beat back raging storm clouds". A winter warmer of a different sort. It works.

Ruby red with an unblemished tan froth. Smells of citrus, pear and herb. Grain up front with light fruits, faint grapefruit and grass following. Light to medium in body.

Pairs well with An Inconvenient Sequel.

The appearance is a hazy golden amber colored body with a slim one finger white foamy head that dies within about a minute; some adequate foamy lacing that tries to cling but ends up sliding into the body; the aroma mainly bitter, now is that hops or is that just plain bitterness for the most part, to me at least its just coming across as plain bitterness, not really getting much hops for the most part; I will say this, some caramel malts do come out as it warms; the taste is mainly bitter again, and those caramel malts do try to make a presence, but end up making a sly subtlety to help balance it just a tad; bitter dry aftertaste and finish; on the palate, well, its a sort of between the light to medium and it comes across super dry in the mouth and tongue; overall, hey, not a bad American Amber/Red Ale that wants to be an Imperial Red Ale.
