pour is a hazy dark copper with a dark murky grey head and large bubbles. Nose is slightly burnt caramel and brown sugar, doughy underneath with pine and faint citrus in back. Taste is a touch more hoppy and citrusy. The malt is sugary and lightly sweet with a burnt grain. Body falls off in back, nicely carbonated but the sugar gives it a grainy feel.

Consumed 4/5/13

Appearance: Hazy caramel color - dark amber, with a lot of orange and yellow when held up to the light - nicely sized, off-white head - keeps a nice cap, leaves some nice splotches of lacing

Smell: Fruity, hoppy, herbal, and grassy - an interesting number of things going on here - orange and grapefruit rinds, somewhat oily, with some pith - herbal, leafy, and grassy - caramel, lightly syrupy malts - hoppy and malty, but I don't think I would necessarily call this balanced

Taste: Bitter and intense, somewhat unexpectedly - oily, wet, sticky citrus - resinous, wet pine - very bitter - big malts as well - caramel, with bready and crackery flavors - leafy, grassy, and herbal - lightly earthy, with some strange (but not bad) spiciness

Mouthfeel: On the full side of medium, nicely carbonated, smooth, somewhat harsh bitter aftertaste - harshness builds over time

Overall: Is this a TMNT reference?

I thought this would be the least intense DIPA that I acquired from San Francisco. I was wrong. This is legitimately intense. Very oily, wet, and hoppy, with some sweet, big malts. Best consumed in a hockey mask, I guess.

Thanks to angrybabboon for procuring the bottle in San Francisco.

Appearance:Slightly hazed copper with some.burnt orange hues. Head is white and loose. Drops to a small loose, bubbly cap with a small.collar. Some splotches and spots of lacing.

Smell: Grapefruit for days. Pithy, juicy flesh. Bright citrus with some.nice elements of tangerine. A small backing pine bitterness. Malts offer a nice supporting backbone. Deeply breast with caramel malt sweetness. Nicely balanced. Pear. Mealy and floral. So much grapefruit.

Taste: Cooked caramel malt sweetness layered over a ton of grapefruit at the start. Pithy with a floral edge. Bready. Pine needle bitterness. Sweet flowers. Some mealy pear, tangerine flesh and zest, and of course, grapefruit. Oily. Warming amps up the sweetness and the breast aspect. Almost like challah at times. Vaguely minty with an aspirin bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: A bit slick and oily. Medium body with a slightly above average carbonation. Some lingering bitterness. Juicy and wet.

Overall: Not quite cool enough to hang with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Balanced but a bit off overall. Hop profile feels a bit mismatched and unpolished. Decent malt presence, but a bit too sweet and wet in the long run.

On draught at the toranado, casey jones is brownish orange with a white head leaving pretty heavy lace.

Smell is bready malt, pine and grapefruit.

Taste starts off heavy on the malt, sweet caramel. The hops come through with big citrus, orange marmelade. A little tropical. Modest bitterness. Smooth, the bruising ABV is well hidden.

Mouthfeel is on the heavier, chewy side. Slick.

Drinkability is pretty good. Very well made, balanced, and dangerously smooth. Too much caramel for me though.

A: a clear orange, nice head and great retention
S: love the smell here. Get a sweet, bready malt. Not much hops here, but I don't mind.
T: first I get the piney/earthy hops, followed by a nice, kind of sweet, bready malt. Can' really tell that its 9%.
M: the mouthfeel is just decent. Light to moderate carbonation
O: definitely a good beer. Really tasty.

Full disclosure, I bought this beer because the dog on the label looks like my dog.

Pours a very hazy burnt orange with an off white head that dissipates and leaves a nice cap. Nice caramel malts.

Aroma. Piney hops with some sweet citrus hanging around underneath. Lemon zest, some grassy hops.

Taste follows the nose then adds some mint and oily hops. Clean finish.

Mouthfeel is medium. Somewhat carbonated. Doesn't really stand up to the hoppiness.

Decent dipa. Glad I tried it, makes me curious about other iron springs brews.

I've had a five year relationship with this beer, but haven't revisited it in awhile. This pours a golden copper with beautiful lacing and a thin white head. Absolutely perfect looking imperial ipa. The nose lacks the citrus punch I remember and is more piny and carmel laden than I remember. There is a little grapefruit on the nose, but less than expected. The tastes follows the nose at first, but develops complexity and well lacking the fruit forward style of a west coast IPA it is actually fantastic. Superb balance that includes a mild dose of citrus, some pine, light caramel, some spices and a long moderately bitter finish. Carbonation is right on point and makes this one far too easy to toss back. Alcohol is not very evident. Worth revisiting a few times a year.

22oz bottle.

Pours cloudy amber with a quarter inch head of white. A partial skim coat with some dots of lacing throughout the glass.

Aromatics feature a subdued amount of hops. Sugar-dusted pine and grapefruit with a hint of tropical fruit.

Medium bodied with a slick, tacky mouhtfeel. A bit flat and limp.

Sweet malt, candied grapefruit, orange segments, and pine sap lead off the palate. A solid but smooth bitterness steps forward with grapefruit rind following through.

Finishes with a lingering bitterness, grapefruit, and sweet malt.

Tasty enough but the nose is seriously lacking for a IIPA and the low carbonation doesn't help. It's also a bit malt-heavy and the hops are pretty standard fare on the palate.

I don’t think that Iron Springs gets enough recognition. Part of it is because so much of their offering s are only on draught at the brewery, and what they bottle doesn’t get very far. Take Casey Jones—it’s fantastic for a DIPA, and that’s coming from a region that knows DIPAs. This pours a ruddy golden color. There’s a great hoppy profile sitting atop it. Piney and floral. Tasty—some piney and floral hops, chewy too. Big but balanced with a malt backbone that mellows things out without needing to be a star player. It hides its strength. Citrusy, grapefruit notes meet up with some piney resin to create all-around goodness.
