This place is terrible. Some of the worst generic "Mexican" food offerings around can be found here. The service is absent-minded at best. Yes, they have 400 different beers on tap or in bottles here, but who can withstand the ridiculous atmosphere here? This sprawling bar is packed with 21 year old college students who are trying to show off about their beer aptitude as if it matters to someone. It's sort of typical place of the climate in Allston, but ironically there is another bar in the area known for great beer that also has great food and service if you'd believe it!

I know Sunset rates high, but last time I was there was a terrible experience. Ive been there a couple times, never that outstanding, but last time Essentially we captured one of the two cockroaches that interrupted our meal. The manager at the time (probably 2 years ago by this point) was completely unsympathetic and offered, literally, no remedy to the situation or our disappointment and disgust. I know nothing about nothing, but I clearly remember him trying to reason to us that every restaurant has insects, theirs is no different. Disgusting.
Their selection certainly is impressive, so if I ever go back, Ill certainly only be drinking from bottles.

sunset got it right when they put the grill before the tap in their name. the food is usually solid and portions more than suffice, but their beer is a different story, and a sad one at that. yes, sunset's selection of beers is quite amazing, but selection is nothing if the freshness and quality isn't there. their freshness guarantee is garbage. keg lines are rarely cleaned, and with the amount of beer on tap, the lines often end up mixing numerous beers as kegs are changed and many end up tasting like garbage. bottled beers aren't much better. watch out as you will often be served a dusty bottle or even one that's been sitting for ages on the beer shelf above the bar if it's the last of the type you are requesting. this place needs to clean up it's act, big time, because it could be beer paradise if operated properly.

Great premise, 100+ taps, hundreds and hundreds of botlles, but they just don't follow through. Service is REALLY hit or miss and unfortunately my experiences include more misses. All the breweriana on the walls is interesting and fun to look at. Great selection of beer, but God only knows how old any selection is at any given time. Food is average pub fare - the mako shark skewers are good, as is the humas appetizer. My biggest complaints about this place are the server's general lack of beer knowledge, not posting what drafts are currently unavailable (I ordered 3 beers and each time the server had to come back and tell me they were out) and the half ass glassware they serve the beer in (Like a lame water glass). I've had 'discussions' with the bar tender regarding certain draft beers being off, but to no avail. If you go, I would recommend sitting at the bar - service and beer knowledge is usually better.

I have been to Sunset numerous times over the years and am finally writing a review after a recent visit. I really want to like this place, and my wife and I give it a chance every 6 months or so, but we always walk away disappointed. The recurring themes are: 1) something always tastes "off" with the draft beers; 2) they have a huge bottle list, but my first two or three selections are unavailable; and 3) it's filled with a rowdy bunch of college kids. My most recent trip just confirmed earlier impressions. The owner seems to be trying to do the right thing by offering unique beers, but the overall focus seems to be on quantity rather than quality.
The food is decent, but nothing out of the ordinary. The service is fine, but the staff don't seem particularly knowledgable about beer.

I cringe every time someone recommends this place. Why, when you are so close to Washington Square, would you relegate yourself to this faux-Applebee's with a beer cellar? Aside from Big City, it's upstairs affiliate, I can think of no "beer bar" in Boston was such a dismal atmosphere. This place feels like it could be a cheesy chain restaurant in the parking lot of some mall, probably in Saint Louis, since the beer paraphernalia would be deemed contextual there by the marketing office. Maybe I'm a pretentious ass, but there's nothing I could get here that I couldn't get and enjoy more at the Publick House. Yes, the beer list may technically be longer, but it's going for quantity not quality, and a quick glance makes that very clear. There are good beers here to be sure, but whether they will be poured or served properly (or even available) is considerably less certain. The food is nothing special, and the overall feeling of an subtle grossness lessens the appetite. On top of all this, the prices aren't outrageous, but are still more than you'd find at many other, better establishments. And just to drive home the Applebee's similarities, all the prices end annoyingly in .85, .95, etc. I don't want to be counting pennies when I'm ordering beer.

I have been to this place many times. Just getting around to a review.
They do have a ton of beers.... However, I have always had the feeling that they over committed to a superior selection and pay the price in the quality of the taps.
I had a Allagash Curieux that was so bad and stale that it was almost criminal and undrinkable. It was flat and stale tasting. If you are gonna have a great beer like that on tap CLEAN THE LINES. What is the point of ruining a great beer with a lousy pour. My buddy had an Old Crustation that was even worse. He didn't even finish it.
I am also not a fan of the scene at this place. Very crowded with drunkard college students. That is not what I am looking for in a beer bar.
The food is Ok. decent pub food.
Basically I have always seen this as a place that puts quantity over quality. I want to like it because there tap and bottle list is so extensive. I have had too many good beers that tasted stale flat or just plain bad. There are much better places not to far from here (Public House and Deep Ellum).

The atmosphere in the bar resembles the outside, an eclectic mix of , signs, sounds, and people. The wall of beer taps is rather impressive, and equally is the wall of bottles to choose from. However, the quality of what flows from them, is suspect. Many times lines need cleaning, or the beer has grown old waiting for it's next consumer. I have to be fair, a hundred plus draft lines must be difficult to take care of.
The service is prompt and friendly, but have no inherent beer knowledge. The "beertenders" have a greater ability to assist with questions, but once agian the beer is not always up to the standard expected by a consumer who loves them.
The food is okay, (mostly pub food). Which is better with a great beer. (my suggestion is sample the draft before buying)
Overall Sunset is a good pub, that could be better if more attention was given to the quality rather than quantity of beer.

The Sunset Grill & Tap near Boston University has one of the best beer menus in all of Boston.
The Sunset Grill is one of the original Boston restaurants to offer a large beer selection. There rotating menu makes them a great place to visit time and time again. Be sure to look out for their monthly beer specials.
The food ranges from average to above average.
My biggest complaint with Sunset is I have on a few occasions had what I would consider to be unacceptable service. Long waits for drinks, entrees being served before apps, disappearing waitresses when all you want is the bill.
Despite the service, Sunset is still a place I try to get to a few times a year.

Very large selection, but you're best off going to the just-tapped section of the menu. It's nice to be able to get flights from such a wide variety. I haven't had any problems with the bottles, higher price of course.
Service is s l o w very very slow, the crowds can be very annoying and loud - it's right in the middle of apartment buildings rented out to college kids and amoungst the variety Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz, Bud Light and Corona are stocked, I don't have to tell you how that equation turns out.
I think the food is adequate, the crew I normally go with has their usuals that they love - the steak sub is supposed to be great, I'm the "beer guy" and there for a different reason.
