Bottled on February 4th 2008, the wrapping says that it is best before 2 years after the bottling date...so I just missed it...

Pours light brown/ruby red. Decent sized, slightly fizzy, off white/light tan head that fades quickly. Lacing slides down the glass.

The smell is pretty amazing. Sweet, rich spice cake. Candied dark fruits. Brown sugar, cinnamon, figs, dates, raisins, and maple syrup.

The taste begins sweet like the smell but is countered with dry and spicy flavors. Cardamon, ginger, and cinnamon with a good amount of roasty flavors. The alcohol is subtle but has a nice spicy warmth.

It has a medium body with pretty low carbonation, but it's dry enough that it doesn't feel lagging.

Complex fruit and spice flavors, with a good amount of sweetness might inhibit the drinkability, but the finish is surprisingly dry which makes it quite drinkable.

Smell: nutty with subtle orange notes and malts

Taste: rich-woody notes, mild ginger, raw almonds, dark chocolate malts (75% dark), unfiltered apple juice, and subtle hints of piney hops

Pairs great with honey baked ham and steamed carrots with mashed potatoes. Ask for the extra gravy

Bottle shared at GRG1313’s tasting.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and citrus flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty but smells slightly better in my opinion.

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a light amber color with two fingers of fluffy white head that quickly recedes to a film. Lacing is very good.

S: Belgian yeast brings out must, peppercorn, clove, lemon zest, and light spices. A bit of prune brings some sweetness.

T: Surprisingly quite dry. Lemon zest pairs with slight dark fruit sweetness for a refreshing flavor. The finish is some booze and a nice amount of clove and peppercorn.

M: Quite dry with medium to high carbonation.

O: I was expecting this to be a bit sweeter and more full. However, it was nicely complex and the flavors worked quite well together. Certainly on the lighter side of BSDA, this was quite enjoyable.

Saw a 750ml of this on the shelf for $4.99 so I decided why not. Never heard of it before. There is no date or any kind of code anywhere on the bottle that I could find.

Poured into a goblet, it is slightly hazy and medium reddish-brown. A white head with ok retention caps the beer and is not especially impressive.

The aroma seemed quite oxidized at first with lots of wet cardboard/sherry notes. Underneath it is dark brown sugar and tofee along with dark fruit. Letting the beer warm really brings out some character.

More sherry and brown sugar on the taste along with a healthy dose of raisins and plums. Mouthfeel is on the sticky side but just stops short of being too sweet. Alcohol is fairly well hidden and provides just a little bit of warming.

Overall, I feel like this probably has some age on it as it tastes oxidized but it is really complimentary to the other flavors. Not sure I would pick it up again as this is not my favorite style but I'm glad I took the chance.

A: deep amber, a little hazy...mildly-silky, off-white head - decent retention, misty cap

S: on a quick pass, smells like a fruited gueuze....likely not as bright in fruitiness, but more balanced toward mellow candy-like malt and phenols

T: this was my third time I had this - tasted better/fresher this time - my immediate impression is that of a dubbel blended with a gueuze.... musty-sour, budding Brett "infection"...bit of a muted sour cherry or raspberry...some vaguely caramelized malt sweetness that gets buffed out a bit by the wild-yeast bitter-funk... light roasted nut or nutty malt late in the aftertaste

M: very much like (see above) a dubbel blended with a gueuze - of the dubbel, some rounded, lightly dextrin-ous body, somewhat soft and smooth, with a nice bit of alcohol warmth in the finish....of the gueuze, a bit of an unfiltered, flour-y funk/tang, the touch of tartness tingling the tongue with acidic bitterness...maybe a little residual body, but with the lightly-funky finish comes a dry, cleansing wash

O: an interesting effort, to say the least - definitely worth trying once

Thanks for this one that totaly flew under my radar, DaftCaskBC!!

Appearance. Pours a cloudy amber-orange with over a finger of amber-tinted head.

Smell. Very fruity! Dark fruits, oranges, caramel, green grapes, raisins, and a little brown sugar and spicy belgian yeast.

Taste. Caramel, brown sugar, spicy belgian yeast, raisins, even a little coffee and maybe some cocoa powder. Nothing is overpowering or even especially stong, but the flavours blend in a very nice way. Just fantastic tasting!

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body with medium-low, smooth carbonation. Just a little bit sticky, but not much of a complaint.

Overall. A fantastic beer!! Amazingly easy to drink and very nice flavours in a great balance. Really enjoyed it, thanks again DaftCaskBC.

A: 1/2" tan coloured head over cloudy brown liquid.

S: Prunes, raisins, pears, flowers and grass.

T: Caramel, dry red wine, prunes, raisins, pears, with walnuts in the finish.

M: Quite dry with medium to thick viscosity and a high level of fine carbonation.

O: Quite a bit different than most of the style. Firstly, it is more dry than sweet. Secondly, the flavours are also quite unique. But this is not a bad thing, because I enjoyed this beer a lot.

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled 4/28/2007(over 5 years!) Pours lightly hazy dark reddish copper color with a small 1 finger off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big prune, raisin, toast, molasses, apple, caramel, toffee, earth, herbal, biscuit, red grape, and yeast spices. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity. A bit malty sweet, but it was expected with the age of this bottle. Taste of caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, raisin, prune, earth, herbal, pepper, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, and yeast spices on the finish for a short bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; but slightly light and dry on the finish. No cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. This is definitely a sipper. Overall this is a very nice Dubbel. This held up well and definitely caramelized over time. A lot of flavor complexity and nice balance. Would not mind trying a less aged bottle in the future.
