Appearance: The beer pours a pale, hazy gold, with a fine white head that leaves nice lacing as it dissipates.

Smell: The nose features a combination of floral and lemony citrus, together with a hint of that Belgian yeast spiciness that we love so much.

Taste: The aroma continues in the mouth, but now the citrus from the hops takes a more prominent role. It’s nicely balanced with the black pepper flavors, a dash of coriandr and a subtle earthiness.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is pretty interesting. Overall, it’s crisp as a result of the medium to high carbonation. However, there’s a depth to it as well, which simultaneously makes it almost creamy in the mouth.

Drinkability: Quite high. Unfortunately I’m drinking it on a rainy and unseasonably cold day, but this strikes me as a perfect beer for summer.

Built for spring religious observances, the original summertime Saison jumps ahead of schedule and introduce itself early with the Lenten namesake.

The Lentenbier pours with a mild hazy hue where strong straw meets light honey-amber. Its almost a dirty ale with a soft bronze hue. A controlled billowing head rises to nearly topple the glass before its cotton-white froth begins to recede. Random lacing pockets adorn the glass in the beer's wake- further affirming the quality of this honored Belgian ale.

The theme of honey continues in the beer's aroma. Floral and fauna notes of rose pedals, wildflowers, and soft coriander, dried oranges, and honey suckle precede the strong sweetness of honeyed malt. Light herbal and more earthen tones follow with the spicy and grassy hops to complement the sweet scent. Fruit notes of apples, lemons, and white grapes peak through the sweetness and offer more supportive balance to the grassy spice.

Flavors fare similarly, as the sweet honey taste starts the show. Floral sweetness and marmalade-type fruitiness provide a strong malt presence that extends deep into finish. But along the way, the richness slowly fades and allows spicy notes of white pepper, wine acidity, and fennel to balance the orchard fruit impressions that arise in the middle palate.

Finishing malty-dry, the ale closes with stubborn sweetness and timid spice and dryness. Elevated fruit character sides it with stronger Belgian golden ales more so than the typical Saison. Late warming is hidden behind the lingering sweetness for an ale that's ideally suited for richer Easter feasts that circulate around lamb and rosemary.

Appearance: Unfiltered, wheat yellow, a bit trouble. Original bottle with paper foil (750 ml).

Smell: Sunny flowers, a bit of citrus,

Taste: Very complex, hop & wheat, very dry aftertaste that stays for a while

Mouthfeel: Very delicate, nice balance. Starts fruity, ends with a great bitterness

Overall: Only flemish saison, complex but magnificent in taste. Easy to drink, alcohol is very well hidden, recommended to drink in summer, good beer when you're thirsty. It's my first crate, but definitely not my last of this beer. The brewer shows in this beer why he's one of the greatest connaisseurs in Belgian beerland.

Poured into a snifter. It says Best before on the wrapper but the space beneath it is blank.

A- Pours a light golden color with a full inch of white head that retains well before shrinking down to a full sheet of thick surface foam. Thick, sudsy lacing adheres to the glass.

S- Effervescent saison yeast aroma that's very complex and unique. Slightly soapy but floral with notes of orange, lemon and a discernible spice characteristic.

T- The taste is similar to the aroma but with more of the spice coming through and less of the citrus. Yeast plays a big part in the flavor profile bringing a richness and milkiness that I don't normally get from saisons. Alcohol is very well-hidden. Trace amount of wet cardboard in the aftertaste.

M- Feel is thicker and creamier than most other versions of the style I've had. Tangy and semi-dry with a light body and medium carbonation (also uncommon for the style).

O- As I keep pointing out, this is a very unique saison that tiptoes around the style. It's more bold in texture than most others I've had but has less carbonation. The taste is more spice-heavy but the yeast sort of evens things out. A great saison, although a bit confusing.

When you first take a sip, the first thing you taste is sunny pastures and golden wheatfields. The after taste; a bitter zing, the pear is well with a lemon and is reminiscent of aged sophistication and earthy grain-fields. The hue combines with the haze of a setting sun that whispered to the golden fields of barley – “you can do better, son,” and thus, SAISON D’ERPE MERE was bequeathed to our lips.

It smells nice. The sweet perfume of the fillies hooves as they sweep down yonder thru the Pasteur.

It looks good. I wont to swimm in its hot yellow goodness. It is thick like lemon gelatin. But it is light, like the tip of a cloud’s tongue.

STING put it best: Man it's a hot one like seven inches from the midday sun. Like this beer.

Thanks to match1112 for the great BIF beer. Tasted 8 March 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours a pale light wheat yellow. A soft color, with touches of gray and light tan. Hazy enough that I can't see through, but clear enough that I can see the thin column of bubbles in the center. Two plus fingers of big white head, foamy and frothy. Great retention, excellent lacing. Tough to beat.

Smell balances all the aspects I want from a saison, hitting the center more than any other I've encountered. Fruity, floral, and earthy funk, in nearly equal parts. Slightly sweet wheat berries, a soft flowery lightness (gentler and better integrated than the bash-you-over-the-head floral saisons I've had recently), with a base of earthy yeasty notes. All these pieces come together so well. Fantastic.

Taste is the low point, but it's still quite good. More earthy than anything else, with a spicy zest that makes it much more interesting. I want more depth, more variety, though.

Mouthfeel is perfect. The second it hits my mouth, it becomes light and fluffy, but as the carbonation dies down it feels more substantial. So smooth, rising and falling perfectly with the taste. Then finished off with a little tingly burst right at the close. It really doesn't get any better than this.

So many saisons are dominated by one aspect. I see the style as having three main components: flowers, fruit, and funk. This one is dead-center, presenting each side well. And the result is one of the better saisons I've had. Delicious.

Bottle purchased at the Hunter Brewing Co. Shared with beer buds Adrian and Sam and whoever else took a sample. I believe it was $16 for a 750ml bottle, which let's face it is a bargain.

Pours a very pale lemony yellow colour, almost the colour of a witbier. It's less cloudy though, and more vivacious with very effusive carbonation. Head is pale and firm, like beaten egg-whites. Lace forms rings as the beer goes down. It looks damn good.

Nose is sharp, but rounded. There's a depth to the aroma, and a little funk, but then it's all about the cutting characteristics: biting lemon, salt and a minerally crystalline structure. It's different to what I expected, and different to the majority of saisons I've had. That in itself is a novelty, and it's good in its own right.

Taste is light but crisp. Spiciness comes through, with herbal, vaguely sharp characters, perhaps a bit of rosemary, layered with soapy, slippery lemon skin and more of those mineral characters. Hint of chlorine backs it out, not in a bad way. Again, it's really very nice.

Feel is light and smooth, and yet bubbly with the carbonation, giving it a pleasant crispness.

Yeah nice saison. Not as full or as funky as some, but it's crisp and prickly throughout—perhaps one of the drier and more refreshing saisons I've had. Not bad at all.
