Grog (Cherry) - Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant

Served at Nodding Head on 4/9/11 during the second Saturday of the month beer event: Groggy Afternoon. This one-off of Grog was a cask conditioned blend of both Grog and Grog D'oer that was "dry hopped" with dried cherries and primed with cherry juice.

Served in a wine glass, approximately 7-8 ounces or so this brew appeared a very clouded brown with no formation of head. Countless swirls of the glass hardly produced a few bubbles on the surface. Trying to look through the body of the brew proves nothing...you can hardly see even through the edges and there is a collection of yeast trub resting at the bottom of the glass.

The aroma of this brew smells of tart cherries and a light almost lactic sourness note. There is chocolate across the middle of the nose and a seemingly fresh grainy sweetness. Overall the smell of this brew is quite enjoyable.

The taste is tart with cherry that gives way to a sweet chocolate malt flavor. A little bit of almost lactic quality is present that blends well with the cherry. There is additional fruited flavor beyond the cherry that is somewhat spicy, possibly contributed by the yeast/alcohol character.

This is a medium to full bodied brew with a lack of carbonation both visually and in the feel. The brew was enjoyable but a little bit of carbonation would have gone a long way. Quite easy drinking and the alcohol was well hidden (for being somewhere in the range of 5.25-7% depending on the ratios of the blending.)
