One of the draft selections on a trip to the Brewhouse #1 in Columbus.

Slightly hazy brown body topped by a tan head, decent retention.
Smell is sweet malt, touch of citrus aroma. Taste is on the sweet side overall, caramel and bready malts, some nuttiness. Slight bitter, earthy hops at the end.
Medium body and low carbonation, nice alcohol warmth as it finishes.
Very drinkable, smooth, a mighty fine after-dinner drink.

A: Tan head finger high on top of a darker, hazy body that is brown color.

S: citrusy with some background sweetness.

T: Some citrus hop flavor with only slightly bitterness an overall sweetness that is caramel like. Surprisingly smooth with a gentle lingering bitterness.

M: Medium body and lighter carbonation.

D: Rather drinkable. The taste is nice and smooth. Good drinkability.

01/17/11- Had this one earlier tonight at Tip Top in Columbus.
A: Murky mahogany with a decent light tan collar, film, and lacing.
S: Nutty caramel with a leafy hops and a creamy consistency, slightly earthy, with a dried apricots or dates fruit.
T: Strong caramel with earthy and very hoppy (green, leafy), slight diacetyl, toffee sweetness; a nice nutty brown. Brown sugar and candi sugar.
M: Thicker and frothy.
D: OK.

I had this hand pumped from the cask into a pint glass at the brewery.

It is a great looking beer. It is a chocolatey brown hazy color with a beige head.

The smell and taste were great. Very malty, but not overpowering.

The mouthfeel was maybe the best part of the beer. It is very drinkable, and a great beer.

Thanks to moejuck for the Growler!

Poured a deep/dark and cloudy amber color with a large sized off white head. Nice lacing left on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, toasty, floral, and some nuttiness. Tastes of chocoalte, nutty, the same toastiness, caramel, and lightly fruity.

A buddy at work brought me this growler fresh from the brewpub in Columbus. Pours about as pretty as a beer can be - chestnut brown with a thick tan head. Thick foamy lacing sticks to the sides of the glass. Aroma of molasses, buckwheat blossom honey, and strong columbus hops. Flavor is mildly roasty and sweet, along with a subtle nuttiness followed by a blast of hoppiness, which sticks around for a long finish. Relatively thick bodied with smooth carbonation. This is a very good beer. I know this borders on sacrilege to some, but I wish they had used a less pungent hop variety in this. EKG or Hallertauer would have worked beautifully, in my opinion. Those who like Columbus hops will love this beer.

Pale shade of mahagony. Red highlights with a creamy, tan frothed head with great retention.

Toffeed malt with a huge blast of piney hops. Very uncharacteristic of an olde ale. Other flowery, figgy aromas with a hint of earth.

Beer is good but drinks much more like an IPA. Very dry hoppy, piney finish. Hop resin devours the tongue. Balance is off because of the immense amount of hop. Served too cold. Upon further warmin some toffee malt thickens and balances the hops somewhat but they are still quite overpowering. Dried berries, and fig.

Mid palate is creamy then turns to bitter, resiny hops on the finish.

Bought a growler of this for New Year's Eve. Poured a pint glass of this. Dark red color with a white, rocky head. Smells of hops and sweet barley. Tastes very hoppy like an IPA. Honestly, much hoppier than I thought it would. I expected an overall sweeter quality, but this was more bitter. Piny hops. Fairly creamy mouthfeel. Overall, not a bad beer, just not what I expected. I would almost describe it as a slightly above average IPA.

Served from a growler and many thanks to Dogbrick for allowing me to partake in this tasty brew.

Appearance: Very light carbonation ring around the glass, cloudy and muddy in color. Kind of looks like a dark cider.

Smell: Strong hop notes with some carmel sweetness noted in the background.

Taste: Bittering hops up front with some chocolate or carmel that occasionally hit the palate. Has kind of a bitter coffee finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and flat.

Drinkability: I could see me drinking more of this because it has plenty of character but isn't heavy on the palate or the stomach.

Notes: I had this the other night and was much more impressed. It seems to have lost a fair bit of carbonation and just doesn't have the punch it did a few days ago. That being said, it's good enough that I would definitely re-visit this for a fresh sample. I haven't had too many old ales but this one's a keeper. Definitely for the hop lovers in all of us.

This beer they compare to Old Peculiar, so I am going with an old ale assessment rather than a English brown ale. The beer was a very dark reddish brown color and had a medium brown bubbly head that left a little lace. Some small amount of carbonation present. The aroma was of malt and butterscotch and became more predominant as the beer warmed. The flavor was also of malt and butterscotch and also got better as it warmed up. The finish was slightly sweet and had a slight hint of alcohol. Another good beer from Scott Francis and his Barley's Brewing crew!
