This is the first beer produced in Brazil using yerba-maté. Prepared with Ilex paraguariensis (yerba-maté), hops, mineral water and a blend of carefully selected imported malted grain. This is a genuinely unique beer with greenish coloration, low fermentation and high alcohol content (7%vol.).

Got a bottle and an appropriate glass (chimarrão cuia, that is) from my friend. I was - i have to admit - very suspicious.

DaDo Ilex looks bit hazy, like pale golden kräusenbier. The start is quite aromatic: a good load of herbs, floral, tobacco and some delicate tea aromas as well, sweetish pale malt and something which reminds me of yeastiness of certain top-fermented Belgian and Northern French beers.

It tastes spicy, it is sweet and malty and it has a good portion of tea leaves flavours, too. Finish is delightfully bitter.

Well balanced beer and you don't realize the strength of alcohol.
The decisive ingredient is yerba mate, typical South American herb.

Delightful beer, indeed!

Finding unique taste with the herbal character of the common "yerba-maté" herb, Dado brewers give a grainy-sweet beer a familiar taste to south Americans, but one that's unique to the beer world... until now.

Pouring a deep and dirty gold, the beer shows a surprising muddled evergreen hue for added curiosity. Its short-lived froth lays a groundwork of perfume, leading with honey and tea and capturing eventual tropical fruit scents. Fruit and spice seem Belgianesque ahead of a rich honey flavor with a raw cereal quality.

As the flavors evolve, the beer unveils its fruit-forward flavor of papaya, pawpaw, cantaloup, red apple and pear- seeming of the slightly bruised variety. Playful acidity seems slightly wine-like as white grape enters the fray. Spicy with a firm tea-like presence the herbal sassafras, cumin, lemongrass and sweet tobacco offer roundness and balance to the fruity sweetness found with the initial sip.

Medium-bodied, the beer wants to drink like lager, but its sweet fruitiness and spice character is suggestive of blonde ale. Its exotic herbal nature is given a southern sweet-tea taste with a hint of hop bitterness that leads to a pleasant grassy bitterness to close.

A: Golden, mostly filtered but with a slight haze, lots of soda like carbonation, almost a greenish tinge reminding me of a saison.

S: Phenols, a slight herbal quality, slight fruitiness, somewhat like a tripel with a bit of pineapple candy or slight grapefruit.

T: Watery, sweet, sour, and smokey are all coming through on the first sip. There’s also a slight pungent taste reminding me of mushrooms, and at moments is also like a bog or swamp.

M: Watery body with lots of soda like carbonation.

O: Love the uniqueness of this brew, and that its from Brazil. Its one of a kind.

Pale golden yellow color, seemed a bit green as well, hazy with a thin white head given the low retention.
Aroma of malt and the traditional Mate herb.
Similarly, flavor of malt with hints of Mate herb. Pleasant beer with a very good drinkability.
Interesting idea; gauchos (Brazilians from Porto Alegre) drink that shit even at the beach (this is drank very warm). Nevertheless, in Sao Paulo interior and central states they drink it with ice, so it is appropriate.
Actually, I had two completely different experiences with it, I am describing here the most positive one, another bottle revealed just a regular lager not in line with their proposal.

(Served in a leather bound glass in the shape of a bomba, in ice bucket)
030712 stamped on bottle

A- This beer pours a hazy lemon yellow body with a thin film of snow white that fades to a thin ring after a bit. There are some big bubbles that glide up the sides of the glass.

S- There is a note of honey malt and Pils malt with a dry lagered quality that is very clean. Mostly cause it was served so cold.

T- The green herbal note has a soft sweetness to it with a Mate hint that grows into field corn as it warms a bit. The touch of sulfur and some sweetness comes through but it is otherwise pretty clean in the taste.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a tight fizz in the finish and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- The DaDo Pub served this ice cold and keeps the bottle in an ice bucket so I didn't get much flavor at all and I don't think I would have reconized the mate flavor if it wasn't on the bottle.

I have found it, the first beer to incorporate yerba mate into the ingredients. Ever since I had been planning to visit Porto Alegre, I have had this beer on my must-try list. So now it is time. 355 ml bottle from Costi Bebidas, on to the beer:

Looks like a cloudy Belgian blonde with a small, but creamy head. Not what I was expecting, but good to look at. The aroma is big on yerba mate. I mean, this is big on yerba mate like West Coast IPA´s are into dry-hopping. Some mango notes rise with the yerba mate.

The taste, meanwhile, is big on the yerba mate, but too much of it is not a good thing. I´m not sure if I like how it tastes. It has a slight fruity flavor and a big kick of yerba mate, but where´s the beer? Too dominating for me, with little balance; this beer ended up being difficult to swallow.

I have to give DaDo credit for using this common Rio Grandense ingredient in their beer, but the end result could have been better excecuted. Lower the ABV, lower the yerba mate, and increase the `beer flavor`. Dissapointed. Still, I look forward to the rest of DaDo´s line.
