Pours a darker brown hued orange with a small tan-nish head in my tulip glass. Nose is salty hops with a underlying syrupy citric tone. Flavor is pungent and salty with a bit too much alcohol coming through. It seems to rest on the back of my tongue. Over time it seems to even out and become a consistently smooth IPA. I can’t say it is too much of a DIPA. It is just nice and mellow and full bodied. Nice to try. Nothing showy at all.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a cloudy golden amber color with a finger thick white head. Smell is pretty weak. Mostly floral hops. Not much else. Taste is mostly citrus and floral hops with a good amount of bitterness and slight sweetness. Not much else really. The alcohol is covered up pretty well though by the bitterness. Mouth is very crisp, but maybe a bit too carbonated and heavy. Overall, an okay brew, but lacks in flavor.

A: Fairly clear copper with a reddish hue and white creamy foam head. Very good retention and lacing.

S: Caramel, earthy funky pine, tart and tangy grapefruit, and lingering floral notes. All aromas work well together.

T: Fruity and floral hops balanced very well with a soft caramel-like malt backbone. Hints of dark fruits. Incredibly smooth with alcohol very well hidden.

M: Full bodied with a higher carbonation that works well here. Creamy and viscous with some appealing prickly carbonation.

D: Very good DIPA that is probably one of the smoothest and well balanced DIPA's I've had in a long time.

on-tap at ebenezers ale house in west seneca, NY. served in a pint glass. i ordered this not realizing it was about 7 years old.

light bronze, burnt orange color. frothy off white retentive head, left a nice creamy layer. a little lace.

minimal hops. slightly herbal citric with a lot of biscuit and light caramel malts.

again, the hops are almost gone. herbal, light citrus with lots of biscuit and light caramel. some bitterness, but not enough to really fit the style. slightly buttery and slightly warming.

bigger side of medium bodied.

tastes a little off, and pretty bland. the hops are almost completely gone and i guess that was to be expected.

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber color with a finger of fluffy off white head that fades to a small layer on top of the pour and leaves some lacing. 4.5

Smell: Hop forward with a strong, sweet citrus presence. There is enough malt to back up the citrus bitterness. 4

Taste: Falls just short of the smell. Still hop forward, but there is a buttery quality that I beleive to be from the malt. Citrus peel hops throughout, but the buttery quality distracts from the hops a bit. Some warm alcohol along with some pepper in the finish. 3

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive carbonation and a dry finish. 4

Overall: This is almost great, but doesn't quite get there. I enjoyed it, but probably woulndn't get another. 3

22oz Bomber - from the Wegman's in Syracuse

Appearance - Slightly hazy amber/copper colour with a large size fizzy off-white coloured head. There an average amount of carbonation and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops, grapefruit, pineapple, corn

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel, hops, and malts. There is also some grapefruit and a fair amount of a pineapple flavour. There also seems to be a bit of a cherry sweetness and a bit of straw/hay. It ends with a pretty decent amount of hop bitterness.

Overall - The hops really linger on the taste buds with this one. The flavours are good but nothing along lines of a sculpin/pliny/hopslam etc. Still worth the purchase.. pick it up if you see it, especially if you like hops.

Lightly chilled 22 oz. bomber poured into an Ommegang tulip. No date on the bottle.

Look- Pours a murky tawny apricot color, the head on this one really stands out- The color of old ivory, it's a loose, sticky, glorious looking mess that clings to the sides of the glass for its life, leaving thick rings of foam as it slowly settles. Man, this looks tasty!

Side note- I've got a friend that calls this a "moustache beer", which he thinks is hillarious. Less so for those of us with moustaches.

Smell- Sweet fruity aroma with a hint of alcohol. More subdued than you'd expect from the 10% ABV. Agitation brings out some soapy/flowery notes and a piney hop twang.

Taste- Sweet fruit, hop bitterness, and alcohol duel it out in this one, emerging and re-emerging in turns; with a very light toffeelike malt that mellows it out a bit and comes out in it's own right towards the end. Aftertaste is like a slowly fading alcohol-hop somersault. I'd like this beer a tad bit more if the tastes were a bit springier- it's well balanced and quite drinkable, but it's missing that lip-smacking quality I look for in a DIPA.

Mouthfeel- Light for the style, moderate carbonation, and the ever-present head lends it nice creaminess on the sip. Coating, but not unpleasantly so. Very easy drinking for the ABV.

Overall- It's quite good, and very reasonably priced for the offering. I feel that the Middle Ages signature "Old World" toasty/toffee malt backbone does this one a bit of a disservice though, blunting the hop presence more than I'd like for the style. Nonetheless, it's a solid offering and one I've sampled and re-sampled many times. Also- the somewhat subtler flavor and relatively clean finish make this an excelent "dinner" beer that goes well with a wide range of foods (in my experience.)

I do remember liking this beer in particular at the brewery way back when, hopefully I'll get to revisit it and update this review at some point in the future.

Poured a hazy copper color from a 22 oz bomber, with ABV clearly printed on the label. There was no date of bottling anywhere.
Massive two finger foamy frothy head that takes forever to subside, leaving behind some really nice, sticky lace. This ale is visually very appealing.
Aroma is very perfume-like, very floral with sweet malts and some alcohol notes.
Taste upfront is on the sweeter side, with the hop presence becoming evident in the middle and exploding till the finish. The finish is surprisingly crisp and almost dry. The bitterness does not linger around in the finish. This is a very, very tasty and well balanced double IPA. The alcohol is also masked really well. The alcohol is definitely not felt on the palate.
Mouthfeel and drinkability are excellent. Just make sure you are not planning on doing anything after a bottle of this DIPA.
Definitely worth a try and comes highly recommended.
A solid brew from Middle Ages.
