Picked this up at ShopRite in Little Falls, which was finally redone recently! Didn't expect to find this on the shelf this time of the year but it was on clearance via the single bottle. I had a feeling it would be like the other Innis and Gunn beers that I had in the past and the exceptional clarity and solid smoothness that I came to expect were also present here, while the alcohol was more recessed this time around.
The pour to this was copper in hue, with a frothy head that quickly faded. Only a bit of soapy lacing could be seen and that quickly slide down the sides of my pint glass. Some whiskey, oak, and caramel in the nose which was reinforced by a very vanilla-like mouthfeel with a hints of coconut and cherry, topped off by a sharp hop bitterness in the back. The transition was amazing to feel since this was distinctly different than other Scottish Ales that I've had, because of the slightly thicker body. There wasn't much of any carbonation to scrape away the taste after each sip and the result was a beer that was body easygoing and subtly complex.
The alcohol was spot-on here, indicating that this was a Scottish Ale but only after I finished everything off. While this wasn't a beer that was perfectly indicative of the style, I liked how they took the American hops and kicked this up a notch. It took a while to fully enjoy this but it was well worth the effort and only proved to me that Innis and Gunn are masters at pushing the envelope of what a beer can be. It was a plus that I was able to enjoy an Independence Day beer in the dead of Winter!

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4
A: poured from a 330 ml bottle into a pint glass, pours a red orange amber with a short white head that dissipates quickly leaving little lacing, clear
S: smell is heavily of oak like a freshly emptied whiskey barrel, also caramelized malt, slight pine hops
T: sweet malt character up front, oak tannins provide some bitterness to the middle that meets up with the light hop flavor, finish is on the sweeter side, flavors milder and simpler than expected
M: medium to full bodied, low carbonation, alcohol presence provides some viscosity but doesn't stand out as offensive
O: the oak aging provides a nice aroma to this beer, flavor is big on malt
