The pour is copper colored. The taste is caramel, vanilla, mild tobacco & char notes. This is a classic example of a scottish ale. Cheers! B

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into the Innis and Gunn tulip. The appearance was a semi-dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute leaving some light spider web lacing. The smell had a rich bittersweet cocoa bean aroma running around some nice woodiness. The taste was basically the same. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with somewhat of a sessionability about it. The carbonation was there but somewhat subdued allowing a nice smoothness about it. Overall, I say this was quite an enjoyable beer worthy of having again.

Pours a clear deep brown with garnet hues when held to the light producing 2 fingers of tan, frothy, shortlived head that leaves wispy webs of lace. Aroma is rich dark bread, brown sugar/molasses, baked apple & spice, raisin, wood, alcohol. Taste is watery porter or thin brown ale with struggling hints of brown bread, molasses, cocoa & a dark cherry-like fruitiness, overpowered by heady notes of wood & alcohol awash in undertones of scotch. The aftertaste is thin scotch & cola. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation, watery but prickly & slightly harsh on the tongue, almost immediately dry the dryness increases throughout the sip, finishing very dry & slightly astringent. Very prominent alcohol for a 7.4 ABV. Slightly cloying, but not necessarily hard to drink, I\'m not interested in a second bottle any time soon.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, no bottled on date. Acquired a bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop. 'Porter with molasses added'.

Poured into a clear snifter glass.

A - Dark brown-black pour; near opaque, with some ruby / mahogany hues showing when held to the light. One finger of thin fluffy khaki tan head that recedes to a ring, leaves some good spotty lacing behind. Looks nice for what it is.

S - A lightly fumey, musty aroma, with notes of oak and cherry wood, with some mild floral alcohol notes. Perhaps some subtle notes of spice with mild hints of dark cherry and vanilla.

T - An interesting flavor profile: mild notes of light chocolate / chocolate malt, roast, oak wood, cherry cola, vanilla. Milky & creamy, with noticeable sweetness and flavors of the molasses contributing. Slightly nutty / woodsy / oaky in the finish.

M - Very smooth & creamy feel, if perhaps just a bit too thin / watery. Light, and easy to drink stuff. Light sticky / sweetness lingering on the finish.

Overall, an enjoyable offering from Innis & Gunn.

Pours an almost jet-black with 3/4 finger on quickly dissipating head... fair bit of carbonation for a porter. Very faint aroma of toffee. Tastes sweet toffee, a hint of nutty in the finish. On the dry side. Very tasty...enjoyed with baked salmon for lunch...excellent.

I am pulling stuff out of my refrigerator that I had completely forgotten about! I am not kidding when I say that the bottle backlog is out of control. I will be glad to return to The CANQuest (tm) when all is said & done.

From the bottle: "Oak Aged Like No Other Beer"; "Brewed In Small Batches"; "Oak Aged Beer"; "Porter With Molasses Added"; "This beer takes its inspiration from the history books. As well as using flavour-packed chocolate and crystal malt, we also added treacle (molasses) which gives the beer its rich, bittersweet character."; "100 years ago in Scotland, treacle was used by brewers to create depth and sweetness, and to give beers a richer mouthfeel and more rounded finish."; "Carefully Matured for 39 Days Prior to Release"; "Approved for Bottling [undersigned] Kirsty A Russell [;] Master Brewer [undersigned] Douglas Gunn Sup".

Treacle = Molasses! I never knew that, but I have read Lawrence Block's "A Diet of Treacle" (1961) and I was curious. I Pop!ped the cap and utilized a gentle pour to create two fingers of foamy, light-tan head with good retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & deep-amber highlights. Nose was really sweet with scents of oak, coconut, treacle (ha!) and caramel. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was a melange of flavors, from coconut & oak to the slight sourness of treacle to a very sugary caramel sweetness. I did not dislike it, but I would not want more than the bottle in front of me. The finish remained sweet, too sweet for my liking.

To sum up the below, strong notes of caramel and molasses, sweet, filling porter. The batches can vary in quality, but most of the ones I have had are delicious.

I've had a few batches of this beer and its quality really varies. Perhaps its my palate, or perhaps it's the beer--I can't quite tell with Innis and Gunn but I can definitely say that this is a great porter. To be honest, most I&G beers are quite delicious, and this fits the Scottish style quite well with it's smooth finish and its beautiful magenta-brown color almost like a syrup. The aromas are more or less woodsy, oaky and caramelized, with a general sweetness. Tastes better than it smells as noted above, and its very rich; there is not too much molasses, just the right amount, which accompanies the taste of the porter as well. There's a ton of carbonation in this beer and it can easily be enjoyed warm. This is overall a great beer, it's a shame they're not currently brewing it because it was really one of their best. Its almost a heavier, sweeter version of the 'Original' Innis & Gunn flavor, without adding too much sweet. If you can find this beer, I'd recommend picking it up before it's gone.
