Hop Knob IPA was a disappointment. It fell well short of embodying a classic American IPA in both the aroma and taste.

Aroma:
There were some pleasant malt aromas but unfortunately that is where the fun stopped. Whiffs of skunk over-powered the malt and the weak hop aroma. The hops contributed some fruitiness but where was the citrus I've grown to love in American IPA's?

Appearance:
A smallish off-white head with barely acceptable staying power capped this hazy amber orange colored brew. There was enough lacing to be noticed and briefly appreciated.

Taste:
Hop Knob tasted thin for an IPA and not surprisingly it was also lacking in malt character. It was a tad watery. There was some pleasant back end bitterness but without an enjoyable malt presence to escort the bitterness across the tongue I'm afraid it was all for not. There is not much to latch on to here but at least it goes down smooth!

Had this from a 22 oz bomber in Portland, OR on 2010-01-23

A - Clear gold with a light tan head

S - Mild bread and floral

T - Too light on the malt but lots of pine and grapefruit bitterness

M - Light with medium carbonation

D - Easy to quaf but the unremarkable taste left me wanting more

Pours clear amber with a one finger white head and lots of lacings. Aroma is some floral hops. Taste is bitter earthy hops with a kiss of grapefruit. Malts are present but subdued. This beer is about the middle of the APA style. Nice enough just not to style. Easy drinker a bit watery on the palate. I would guess the abv at about 5 to 5.5%.
Would make a decent session beer. Just don't expect the big hops of an IPA. Maybe they were aiming at the English IPA style. This would be very close to that type. Carbonation is fairly light.

A: Pours a clear orange color, not much head with no lacing down the glass.
S: Strong citrusy scent also some caramel malty scents
T: Much the same as the smell. Lots of caramel maltiness almost too much actually followed by citrusy hops.
M: Medium bodied, carbonated well for the style
O: This is a decent IPA, very solid but nothing I'd probably seek out.

22oz.bottle from Roth’s Vista Market in S.Salem. $4.69 This is now just Hopnob IPA and is 6.0% alc. typical clear orange IPA coloured ale large impressive frothy white head..stays for ever. Not the most aromatic IPA..what there is is citric and resin with a bit of caramel thrown in. Taste is the same mainly citric( i am reminded of Seville orange) hops and a nice caramel malt backing..very simple. Nice enough mouthfeel just about right for style though could have used more carbonation. Pretty average beer which is a disappointment as i have always liked Silver Moon when i visit Bend..it has more of a local feel about it and the beers fresh are great..in bottles i am not so sure.

A: Hazy amber body. Large off-white fluffy head. Moderate retention but fairly decent lacing down the glass sides.

S: Some orange and grapefruit, a bit of grass and pine. Dull, bready malts fill out the aroma profile from start to finish.

T: Lots of malt, too much malt actually. The breadyness drowns out the citric and earthy hops that were at least present in the nose.

M: A bit thin in the middle. Carbonation levels were good. Finish is muted and a bit muddled. No bite or crispness.

D: A decent, but not memorable IPA. Not something I'd seek out in a bottle.

Appears bright (but hazy) orange with a small off-white head.

It smells of grassy, pine like hops. I also get some grapefruit/ deep citrusy smells and a mild bread like malt smell.

It tastes of pine like spicy hops. I get a bit of a grassy and grapefruit like flavor. The grapefruit flavor lingers on for a while. There is a bit of a bread like malt flavor though hops dominate.

The carbonation is around medium.

Overall not the best IPA I have had but a pretty decent example of the style.

pours a clear golden copper with white head

aromas of grapefruit, slight pine and floral notes, slight biscuity malt

grapefruit notes with sturdy pine, more floral and dry hops on the finish, slight caramel backbone and faint lemon

light bodied, hops enduring on a rising finish, decently dry finish

light, smooth, decent hoppiness, not as big and bold as I prefer but its solid and tastes like an IPA should

Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a clear, typical, golden-orange-amber color with about an inch of white head that had decent retention and lacing.

The aroma was an OK blend of pine and citrus hop scents. The flavors were also pine and citrus with some malt in the background. The body was typical for the style, as was drinkability.

Overall, a nice, but not great, example of the style. Worth trying if you see it.

On tap at The Red Hot in Tacoma on 6/9/12.

Appearance: Slightly hazy bright orange color only a bit of head and not much lacing on the glass.

Smell: Subtle citrus hops with some floral notes that are less prominent.

Taste: Initially a citrus hop flavor, then a rich caramel malt flavor takes over the palate. Mild bitterness as it finishes. Light flavors overall.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with slightly lower than average carbonation. Dry as it finishes.

Overall: An average West Coast IPA that doesn't have any flavors jumping out at me. Still, drinkable and decent hop profile.

Clear amber colour with a fluffy, off-white head. Good head retention.

Bright citrus and grapefruit aroma. Slightly sweet.

Slightly malty with good grapefruit flavour. Balanced towards the bitterness. Nice enough.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A decent, generic West Coast IPA. Worth a try.

On tap @ the tasting room in Bend.

A - orange in color with a 3/4 inch head. Lacing is outstanding.

S - citrus and pine. Smell is the best quality of this IPA.

T - disappoints after the anticipation after smell. Overall bitterness not commensurate with the aroma.

M - a little over carbonated but only a little.

O - a fresh light ipa good on a summer day.

A: Pours a cloudy amber color with copper highlights when held to the light. Head is barely a film on the glass, and remains a light film with a ring collar. Nice sticky lacing down the glass as I drink. Slow effervescence gives the beer a very syrupy look.

S: Mostly citrus (orange, grapefruit, pineapple) and floral hops, with some pine character. A little weed. I was expecting more than the slight biscuit malt aroma, given that this is a 'regular' IPA. It certainly smells more like a double or imperial.

T: Citric tastes up front, with a predominately orange and grapefruit bent. The mid-taste sees biscuit malt and a slight pineapple tang. The finish is floral hops, with a lingering sticky bitterness.

M: A little light-bodied and watery, with medium carbonation. Nice stickiness without being oily. ABV isn't too high, so it makes sense that I don't feel it.

D: Good. Seems like a great sessionable IPA, if it's a decent price.

Pours like a darker yellow ipa, with some orange current running through it. Orange is the best descriptor for the aroma, hops and orange.

Citric taste ebbs and flows into some average bitterness, but largely the hop mouthfeel fades and dissolves kind of quickly. Finishes kinda dry, but doesn't leave you wanting to recommend it to anyone or seek it out. Wouldn't pay more than $5 for a bomber of this. Decent stuff in a land of very good stuff.

From notes...

Pours a bright and slightly hazy orange color with a thin white head.

Aromas are nice. Light hops, a doughy, candy like, and citrusy.

Taste is surprisingly more bitter than I expected. Apirin and grapefruit like upfront. Beer then settles into some doughy and creamy malt sweetness that is subtle and in the background. Finish has another bitter blast from the hops, kind of piney.

Mouthfeel is well carbonated and full, not lacking any body.

Drinkability is good. This IPA packs a pretty decent punch, hoppy and bitter, and I like it even though it's kind of out of balance.

Pours hazy orange with an amber hue and an inch thick head of beige.
Decent lacing and a solid skim coat throughout the glass.

Aromatics are muted for the style but there are traces of pine, grapefruit, and crisp, chaulky malt.

Medium bodied with a drying mouthfeel.

Grapefruit pith and pine resin start the palate. A firm bitterness with husky malt follow through. The hops are restrained but theres plenty of bitterness.

Finishes with a chalky bite, pithy citrus, and pine bark.

Tasty enough but failry timid for the style, especially from the PNW.

Appearance has a slightly hazy golden orange head with a firm but dissipating head leaving fair lace. Smell has a good balance of the citric piney hops with nice malt backbone with a light grassy earthiness to the nose. Taste has those upfront citric piney hops fallowed by the malt with light biscuit and grain. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Not a bad IPA overall, nothing complex, just a good ol' PNW IPA.

Buddies GF brought a bottle of this home... so many IPA's from this brewer... hard to keep track and review... but yet so cool...

- Cloudy.. lightly... orange, huge fluffy white head, the yeast of the hops and gods... caramel IPA west coast goodness... something is right here...

- Crisp pine, and grassy bitter hop... melded well with a balanced caramel and slightly thin sweet profile... bready biscuit aroma... floral left in the nose... bright for sure.

- Smooth malts, floral leafy fields of hops, flowers, grass... sweet caramel and robust husks of bread... a tangy punch of zesty bitter hops... leaves a crisp freshness...

- Drying.... slightly chewy, and rather light bodied... but yet it;s all there...

- Overall a very impressive IPA... one I would be happy to call a flagship IPA as any brewer... drinkable, balanced. and tart... one to promote, and sent some kegs about!

On tap at Concordia alehouse last night.

The beer pours an copper amber color with fairly good head retention and lacing. Don't get a whole lot on the nose... just some light dry citrus, wood chips and a hint of cereal and sweet malt. On the palate, the beer is a bit better and is definitely on the dry side. There's enough malt to handle the hoppy bitterness, but this IPA is definitely west coast (stylistically) all the way. The flavor profile otherwise seemed a bit light to me, though the beer is certainly easy drinking enough. The finish is fairly long and bitter, and I found myself warming up to this beer the more I drank of it.

While nothing spectacular, this is a solid, generally well made IPA without any noticeable flaws. Not sure I'd order it again, but it went well enough with my ceaser salad.

Enjoying this one on the porch, a bit chilly tonight.
Dull orange and gold color, nice head, good retention

Aroma has the west coast stigma. Piney and citrus. Light caramel malt undertones, more of a biscuit malt.

Flavors are solid and go well with the bite in the middle and at the finish. Citrus and some floral mixes in with citrus. Sweetness up front a bit and then at the end. Caramel first, quickly, and biscuit at finish.

Good dryness, easy drinking

Bomber poured into a nonic, Hop Knob is rusty orange with a light sand colored head that leaves decent lace.

Smell is sweet, bright hops, nice pungency, a fresh bottle for sure. Floral, with some tropical fruits and a hint of resin.

Taste is good, nice and hoppy but all flavor, not a lot of bitterness, which I greatly prefer in IPAs. However ,there's a sweet malt backbone, but there is enough bitterness to keep it crisp and not cloying. There's a grainy toasted breadiness to the malt on the finish that lingers.

Mouthfeel is dry, slick, a bit spicy, medium bodied.

Drinkability is good, a nice little IPA. If I lived in Bend I'd probably drink it a lot!

A - Pours a clear medium orange with a one inch cream-colored head. Very good retention.

22-oz bottle that I picked up over the 7/4/11 weekend trip to Bend, OR. Bottle also indicates ABV of 5.7%. Enjoyed on 7/24 from a tulip glass.

A: Golden, hazy orange. Egg-shell white head that grabs at the leg of the tulip.

N: Beautiful orange and pine with a bit of pineapple.

T/M: Bitter pine and earth with a nice sweetness on the back end from the malt. The body is light with an oily texture. Not overwhelmingly carbonated, but acceptable for the style.

This is a well-balanced ale. It is low in ABV but not in flavor! I think this would make a good BBQ beer because it is so rich, light, and totally sessionable if you are working around the house.

Pours a deep rich copper, with a good offwhite head. Good heavy hop crispness in the aroma, lots of herbal and floral hops, cannabis, citrus and some light pine.

My favorite offering from Siver Moon. It's got a realy lush thick mouthfeel, full of hops and just enough malt to balance and beef it up. This a good drinker, with a good spicy hop bite that makes you drink it kinda slow and savor it.

Overall, a really nice IPA!
